Yeah, CNN even covered it! Bigger headlines than the Britney Spears mini-marriage ...

So watch out, Mike! If Vicky sets her sails on David it's all over. Can you imagine? TWO DAYS before Valentine's Day. The nerve!

found this on the net with a google search of /DAZ Acquired/ THRAE.com will change dramatically in terms of offerings as we move away from the old and into the new. We are still in product testing at the moment and hope to offer some sneak peeks in the near future. The only hint we can provide is to have you check out http://www.daz3d.com. We hope you'll like what we will have to offer!

OREM, UT: For immediate release Speculation ended today when it was announced that Microsoft (MCSFT) has purchased the 3-d content provider DAZ, Inc (DAZ3D). DAZ's 3-d software application will be renamed "MS Studio" and will become part of Microsoft's Office suite of programs. Plans are already underway to link Studio to other Office programs: a user will be able create a database in Access, mail merge it into Word and then render it in Studio. Accountants will be able to take their spreadsheets from Excel into Studio and create full 3-d models of their data. Of course, these models can then be brought into PowerPoint for presentations or into FrontPage for publishing to the web. As for the Mac version of Studio, a Microsoft represntative had this to say, on condition of anonymity: "Windows is the future. Choice is irrelevant. Resistance is futile." Listening to the feedback from users, Microsoft planned to add incredible new features to Studio, which include the following: We interrupt this message for the following important message: In a hostile take-over, Microsoft has purchased the Walt Disney Corporation and AOL/ Time Warner. This just in: Microsoft purchases the United States Government, deletes "anit-monopoly" regulations.

Here's my 1/4 cents worth. They're bringing back the deposed CL management, programers, and writers to give them another chance to get it right!

Possibly DAZ is going public at stock exchange and Platinum members will be able to buy shares at a lower price than the initial market price or earlier or something like that? Just a guess I had spontaneously! ;-) Bernie

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 11:46 AM

Pretty much the same speculation. 8-)

Yup. Only the DAZ thread is a lot longer, and the speculation a lot funnier - involving bunnies on Viagra, digital clones of the Olsen Twins, and insect overlords enslaving us in the confines of underground rendering caves, among other things (a lot of other things).

Jackson ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 11:59 AM

From the origial post: "Announcement: Important Message for Platinum Club Members" I guess there is something new next week which is the biggest thing since daz emerged from zygote. quote"make an important announcement that we believe will be a significant instrument in securing the future of DAZ, its customers and community partners" The quote marks aren't mine...they're from wrpspeed, the origial poster. Please note the part about "...biggest thing since DAZ emerged from zygote." is NOT a quote from DAZ.

Not a direct quote, no, but the original message did say basically the same thing. I believe the words they used were "most significant" instead of "biggest."

No, the exact quote is: "This is the most significant event for DAZ since our spin-off from Zygote."

Is there a difference?.

Jackson ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 12:59 PM

Oh, sorry. I'm not a member of the PC club so I couldn't read the statement. I was just going on what wrpspeed wrote: "I guess there is something new next week which is the biggest thing since daz emerged from zygote." My bad.

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:35 PM

I'm getting confused. I think the jokes are poisoning the context of the discussion. But if DAZ3D tried to limit this announcement to Platinum Club members, I don't think it's likely to be something about a change in who owns the company. Stock Exchanges, at least, have rules about how stuff can be announced, and I think that rules out the involvement of any company with shares traded on an exchange. Maybe they're having a sale.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:38 PM

I don't think a sale would qualify as "This is the most significant event for DAZ since our spin-off from Zygote." However, that said...I wouldn't mind the WHOLE Daz store being on sale for 1.99 LOL

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:55 PM

The new store design they're planning to rollout over summer may have something to do with the announcement too.

I think DAZ just want to see how long a thread of speculation they could start ;-)

You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 2:57 PM

Maybe Daz wanted to see how long an OT thread could last in this forum without any mention of the program that it's for ;)

LonCray ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 3:39 PM

I disagree about the jokes - Dan Farr has posted several times in the DAZ Members Only forum and he seems to be taking our jocularity in stride. A few folks are upset that bandwidth has been wasted on an announcement announcing that an announcement will be announced, but most of us are just having fun. And I'm the first one to post (in the DAZ Members Only forum) that I think that DAZ bought Curious Labs, so if that's it I should win a free Platinum Club item! ;)

CURSE ALL YOU FOUL PEOPLE TRYING TO GET OVER WITH CHARGEBACKS!!! So how about that Poser Program?

"Rudolf, Here at DAZ Productions, we are creating an online Bryce forum, in an effort to revive the Bryce community. We also have plans to create a gallery of choice Bryce images, and even run some contests in our store. As you know, Bryce is an amazing 3D resource. We feel that not enough has been done to support the community that has been so loyal to the program. We would like to invite you to be involved in this process. We need forum moderators, gallery images and people who are just plain enthusiastic about Bryce. Please contact me via phone or e-mail, listed below, if you are interested in helping to spearhead this exciting project, or if you have any suggestions for this project. Your involvement would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Melissa Vanderlaan Marketing Operations Coordinator DAZ Productions"*

Of all the programs out there, why in the hell would DAZ be so interested in Bryce? It's been dead for some time now. I'll bet it could be bought real cheap, though...

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:15 PM

Bryce 5 price in cataloges is about $50.00. As far as I know there were no plans for 6 in the works. Corel would proably let it go.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:19 PM

I could careless about Bryce...besides that..how would that revolutionize the community???? That's a dead program basically...no offense to any Brycers out there :)It wouldn't. Most 3d forums have a place for Brycers anyway. If they were interested in Progress they should check into Vue/Terreagen & MojoWorld.

x2000 ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:40 PM

How would that revolutionize the community? Well, if DAZ owned Bryce, they could make it work with DAZ Studio in ways that it never has with Poser, maybe even in even ways Poser has never worked with anything. Sure, there are Poser plugins for Vue, Carrara, Maya, etc. But if DAZ actually owned Bryce, they could integrate them in ways you'll never see with apps owned by separate companies. Of course, this is still pure speculation. But it sure does look suspicious.;)

Charlie_Tuna ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:51 PM

I'll agree on the suspicious part X2000...I noticed that earlier. Kinda strange actually....since Bryce is dead, they'd pick that one to have a forum for..when the others I mentioned above are more up & coming & being updated frequently. That said...I've got Bryce & thought it...well..not my cup of tea ;) So it's no longer residing on my puter.:D

Bryce??!! Eyew. Er, no offense to Bryce fans, but the idea of DAZ starting to do Bryce stuff as well as Poser doesn't thrill me. If the big announcement is they're buying Bryce, color me underwhelmed.

You got that right randym77...I'd be :( & grrrr...talk about underwhelmed..that would be an understatment with all this hype crap. Then again..the Brycers would be....I don't know...they complain about Poser all the time in their forum. Just like all the LW users who think us Poser users are beneath them...same difference(in case there is something happening along those lines)

Jackson ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:29 PM

Man I hope it ain't true about Bryce, unless they plan on a major re-write. IMO, Bryce is a royal pain to use compared with Vue, which imports Poser scenes easily...no plugin needed.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:32 PM

I agree Jackson...the disappearing task bar(top) & the slow rendering is more than I could bare even at a cheap price......that was money flushed down the toilet :( IMHO.

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:49 PM

Someone in a post above (ShadowWind?) mentioned that they thought it was just something to do with the Platinum Club because it's only PC members who got the email, however, that's one of the perks of being a Platinum Club member, in that PC members get advance news of things that take place at DAZ, so I doubt it's something affecting only the PC. I won't even try to make a guess. I'll just wait to see what they announce next week. Melanie

With DAZ's wording...absolutely sounds like a corporate merger of some sort. I VERY much doubt it is with Sony, or with Bryce, lol. DAZ most likely just wants to create a niche in its DAZ nest-site for Bryce users, is all, get them interested in DAZ Studio. ;o) Which...Bryce, for a "dead" program, sure has a large user base and an average of 3 times the amount of daily gallery uploads as Vue....;o) (relax...its all good, Terragen is going to blow everybody away one day, lol) AgentSmith

Would be a waste unless you could also (at least) use Bryce's materials and raytracer. Lol, I rarely do landscapes with my Bryce anyways. AS

who3d ( ) posted Fri, 18 June 2004 at 5:42 AM

Well, Bryce materials would be a given in such a scenario, but is its raytracer significantly better than a Renderman-type rendering engine?

x2000 ( ) posted Fri, 18 June 2004 at 6:56 AM

Really? Hmm. There's no way in hell DAZ could buy Lightwave, I'm not sure they could even afford Bryce. If this is true (and that's a big if, the rumors are running wild), then the only conclusion I can draw is that Newtek bought DAZ and Bryce both.

Time will tell...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 18 June 2004 at 7:22 AM

Maybe they couldn't afford Bryce at the moment, Corel is holding onto it for a little longer sice it is selling so well at $79. But after the sales go down.... (they WERE going to sell it a year or two ago for much cheaper than you would think)(didn't happen) "but is its raytracer significantly better than a Renderman-type rendering engine?" Heck no. Lol, I love Bryce, but I'm not gonna blow that kinda smoke up anyone's skirt. AgentSmith
