Subject: Running out of memory ?

hein ( ) posted Sun, 29 October 2000 at 1:58 AM · edited Sat, 20 July 2024 at 10:30 PM

Anyone have an idea what kind of machine is needed for Vue 3.1 ??? . For the past week I've been trying to render an image in VUE and no matter what I try I get an "out of memory" whenever I render to a quality better than "sketch" and an image size larger than 320x240. I've tried a clean setup ( PII-350 256Mb mem and 8Gb HDD )with nothing but Win98 & Vue 3.1 installed, the result stays the same. For anyone who wants a try at the image , the file plus the mat-files can be found at http://www.thewizzs.com/files/pumkin.zip

How big is the file? How much disk (swap/scratch) space do u have allocated? Do u have anything running in the background? (enhancers, browsers, antiviral apps) Sacred

The file itself is about 170Kb , a smaller version resulted in the same error. As I stated in the question , there's nothing on that PC but Win98Se and Vue on the C: drive so nothing else is running. I tried to let Win98 sort out the swapspace first , then set the swapspace to 8Gb on the empty D:drive aka no files but the swap there.

I have downloaded your file and have looked on it. (It would take really too long to render, also I cannot try that on my poor P II-300 128 RAM) But... maybe this helps. Your pumpkin is made from toruses. When you do so, you should GROUP your objects and NEVER use BOOLEAN UNION on this kind of objects. Boolean union uses a lot of memory and also slows down render time. Boolean union is only to use with glass or other transparent material, also you will not see the inner joints between one object and the other by transparency when you make an union. All your objects are animated !! Did you know that ? This takes lots of memory also. If you don't want your objects to be animated, select them and then change STANDARD to NOT ANIMATED in the MOUVEMENT folder at top of the World Browser. If this is not a solution, HAve you tried the following : DEFRAG your HD Have a look in START-->PROGRAM-->MS-DOS and type MEM then ENTER to see how much memory is free for use. You must have atleast 576 KB free. If not, read Windows's 89 Help file about missing memory. As I'm not a specialist in Computers that's the only thing I know you could try first. If your problem don't find a solution, ask at our e-group http://www.onelist.com/community/vuedesprit From over 100 members there may be one who knows to help you better. :-) ATleast, If you absolutely want a pumpkin but cannot render yours, I can send you one ready for use I found on the web. Hi, Yeah...what Guitta said! Anyway, I downloaded it too, and made it through 37 minutes of rendering to Preview at 500x375 pixels, without a problem, but it still had over an hour to go and I didn't want to wait any longer, but I will try it again later since I have to go out and do some shopping---let the PC do it's thing while I'm away. Anyway, I've rendered far larger scenes to final mode without any trouble. When I set your scene to Final, after about ten minutes of rendering, the time thingie said it would take about 4 more hours. My longest render time to date was about 6 hours. I'm running Windows 98 SE with a 600 mhz Athlon, 128 MB RAM, and while I was rendering your scene (in preview), I was using IE, and my Zone Alarm always runs in the background, as well as Norton System Doctor, Mc Affee, MSN Messenger, and my Eudora mail. One thing I noticed is that your lights are all set pretty high as far as shadows go. That will also greatly slow down rendering speed, and probably tax your RAM, as well. Offhand, I'd say you probably need to adjust your memory settings, but you said you did that, so I don't know. Maybe try to uninstall Vue and re-install it? Just a wild guess, but doing that has helped with other problems. Also, e-on would probably like to have the file to check it out themselves...who knows, maybe it's a bug, but like I said, I have no reason to doubt that I would be able to render it completely. One thing you didn't mention is, how far does it get before you get the error message? Sorry to be of so little help. :( Cheers, Mike

lots of lights with soft shadows + blurred transparencies + large boolean unions = unhappy computer :) You should minimize the processor intensive features mentioned above. It seems to me that just about all of these occurences could be gotten rid of in your file with no effect on what the image looks like. -Karl

Thanks all for the info , I'll set up the image again keeping the above in mind. Rgds Hein

I made groups out of booleans and unset all unneccesary shadows & blurries and it did make a difference, the image still took quite a while to render but the "out of memory" was gone. Only other thing that happened was that I didn't like the feel of the image anymore, so I started a new one till real life caught up with the playing with pics and so this excercise is put on ice till after the Xmas season. Image attached is where I stopped playing with this one, rendertime 1024x764 to final was abt 6 hrs, which is OK that PC is only for "images/the rendering of...".

Lookin' good, Hein. That's on huge pumpkin there. Glad to hear you got it all straightened out. :) Cheers, Mike

Rambooster. I cannot stress this little program enough. :) Since I'm currently working on a system with only 128 Mb of RAM I couldn't even think of rendering anything without running rambooster as well. It really does speed things up for me and prevents those awful "out of memory" problems I used to have. Kate P.S. glad to see you got your image to work.

hein, it looks good. the texture on the pumpkin is interesting, which is the part that is probably taking up all the rendering time. does it still have blurred transparency? when I looked at it before it had blurred transparency, but the transparency was set so low that it was totally uneccessary. -karl

The skin still has .8 (abt halfway on the scale) blurred transparency , didn't like it as much without. Posted the MAT-file to the link below in case you feel the need to dress a pumkin or a squash as I've been informed by sources in the know of such matters :). The MAT was set to 0.10 . http://www.thewizzs.com/files/pkskin.zip I'll take a look at Ramboost , see if it helps.
