THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce Exporting

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 1:14 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 2:56 PM

Right. I've a problem. I'm working on a fairly big animation sequence at the moment, wich includes a wad of self-created objects i made in bryce. My problem is that i cannot export the grouped objects. Well, not to a format poser reads, anyway. Wich means i'm having to manually insert the poser figures to each frame. And there's 1800 of them ! IS there a way to export Bryce grouped objects to, for instance, .3ds Files or another format? This would allso come in helpfull would i plan to start selling my objects - yes i can sell but... Exporting altmap-conversions of, say, my swords, casues them to look utterly crappy. My question is - is there something like a plugin for Bryce that lets me export my objects to, for instance, Poser objects or .3ds files ? I lack the financial means to purchase other 3d-designing programs such as 3dStudio - and hell, i wouldn't know where to begin looking for them, here in holland... Thanks in advance.

Bryce primitives (spheres, cubes, metaballs, etc.) cannot be exported. Period. Terrains and lattices can be exported. Hopefully this is something that will be remedied in the next version. In the meantime, why not try out Wings3D? Its totally free, easy to use, and can import and export a whack of file types. Did I mention it is free? I've been using it for a while now, including for my paying projects. Oh yeah, and its free. :) Hope this helps.

In a word... No. In a few more words, you can export bryce native objects in a bryce only format, which is somewhat useful for giving away or selling. Apart from that, there isn't a conversion yet. Mesh based objects (lattices, rocks etc) can be exported. Edit - Crosspost, but only just!!

Thanks for the help, Jaymonjay and mahray. Seems i'm going to be stuck for a while writing an actual converter. Oh well, if i get around to it :) ... I wonder if there's a market for it. Thanks for that link, Jaymonjay, i'll give it a go.

:P yeah, well, i'm a newbie to both bryce and renderosity. My images should prove that ^_^

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 3:25 AM

I'm a bit vague here....but wonder if there isn't a way you can do your animation in Bryce against a black background, then do whatever animation you want in Poser, and then manually merge each frame in Photoshop? Or the other way round - do your scene in Bryce, and superimpose the Poser figures. I've never tried either course, so just talking off the top of my head.

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 3:27 AM · edited Thu, 23 September 2004 at 3:28 AM

PS - Wings!!!!!! It's the easiest modeller out there. If you want to make objects for sale, sooner or later you'll have to bite the bullet. It couldn't be easier to use. If you can model in Bryce then you can model in Wings, honest. Also, maybe have a look at the Object Mask option in the render options - that could be useful.

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 3:28 AM

Yes, i could do that - but that would imply having to perfectly recreate the lighting of one program, in another. Superimposing two animations over another by means of Layers will work, but it will give a nasty edge-effect, like the edge around Superman in every of the old Superman movie's 'flight' scenes. And this is not a desirable effect.

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 3:35 AM

back to wings....here's a link to a VERY basic tutorial I did some time ago. Just have a look at the pictures, and you'll see how easy a program it is to use. I had tried every modelling program under the sun, without success, before I found Wings. Very simple sword tutorial

Well ! thanks. Either i just happened to post at the rigth time, or there's a lot of people out there with nothing to do :) Either way, i'm gratefull for all the help !

Oh, no, I never asked it, can I ask now so I can be Brycer too ??? :P

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 4:45 AM

There is a large list of questions that qualify; how to export how do I select meshes how do I make my renders look like rochr's how to find the "exit" in 5.0...

Mahray ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 5:34 AM

Rendering in Poser against a solid colour background, rendering a background in bryce, then using After Effects works quite well. If you can afford that (thank goodness for uni labs...)

I seem to be one step behind. Every time I need an answer to a question I have, someone else posts the very question a few hours before. I guess I'm not working in Bryce fast enough. :- Incidentally, Rochr's gallery was the first I ever visited. Man, was I ever discouraged. But I soon learned that he is one of the best. So could someone point me to a gallery that's kinda normal in hopes to aspire to that?

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 9:25 AM

Bah. Atleast i'm getting somewhere in writing a dirty little program that strips bryce saves and converts grouped objects into mesh objects. Polygonisation is fun - if it's automated. This is harder than i thought, though - and there can't be more than one group in the save. Other than that, i'm slowly but surely getting there. Maybe in a month or so, i'll have this beaten. Untill then, i'll give Wings a try.

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 10:38 AM

Whoooooo.....way to go Angelus!!!!! Will you share when finished with the mesh-conversion tool?

Quote: Quote: Enjoying the Bryce Forum. My question is whether any plans to enable us to export our models from Bryce for use elsewhere? Yes. We already have several import/export plug-ins in development for Bryce 5.5. But please feel free to suggest your favorite formats and then we will create a poll. These can be developed rather quickly and indepedently of Bryce 5.5 so your direction will produce results either at release time or shortly thereafter. End quote. This is sounding better & better :)

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 2:38 PM

dlk, don't want to sound peevish or anything, but could you include the link to the DAZ posts? Pretty please? That way I wouldn't have to dig through Bryce Talk and any other forum at DAZ.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 7:04 PM

Angelus, newbie or not, at least you brought it up in the right way, with a project at hand... Methinks that you're going about it backwards, though. I think you should actually do the animation in Bryce, except for the figures. Do them in poser, with null objects as placers. Then coposite them in AfterEffects or some other program. Poser will render alphas (TIFF) if you tell it to...

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 9:41 PM

Yes. But i can't get Poser to render animations at high colour values. Everything i do to render an animation to sepparate frames, i get 256 color value shite. And besides that, Poser renders notoriously slow. The exact same scene renderred in Poser and in Bryce, took poser more than twice as long to complete... And i am on a deadline here.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 23 September 2004 at 9:51 PM

I'm not even seeing an option to render or animate in 256 colors. Even Poser can render way slow depending on number of lights, shadow map size, and render settings. Tweak'em, don't use really high setting that won't truly make the animation look THAT much better. AS

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Fri, 24 September 2004 at 12:06 AM

it's not an option. Whenever i Render an animation, even to AVI, it turns out looking as though it is a 256 color GIF file- you know, with the odd 'bands' of luminescance and color running over the subject ? Somehow this happened to me with Poser4, too. I only got it to render correctly, ONCE. and that was by sheer chance.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 24 September 2004 at 12:35 AM

I'm only guessing, could it be the video codec? Have you tried rending out a little bit just as uncompressed images? AS

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Fri, 24 September 2004 at 1:37 AM

Aye, that's definitely a video codec issue. For example, many 'puter movies are .avi (Audio-VIdeo) files or .mpg files, but the compression codecs when writing these files differs. It's generally a quality vs. filesize thing, meaning that the smaller the video the poorer video quality you'll get. In your case, Poser is rendering out at avery low-quality setting. If you're gonna composite footage later, render out to single TIFF's. That's one image file per frame. Are you using Poser 3, 4, or 5?

Angelus_CHaoS ( ) posted Fri, 24 September 2004 at 1:49 AM

I had the same problem in Poser 4, and now using 5... this definately Sucks ! And i know frame-per-frame Renderring. ^^ i'm not -that- much of a n00b ^^
