Subject: Re-building my Runtime: some questions

Francemi ( ) posted Fri, 15 October 2004 at 7:58 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 10:31 AM

Hello! I have formated my C: drive and installed WinXP (to replace 98). I have installed Poser 5 and SR4. Now I want to re-build my Runtime folder starting from scratch, to make sure I don't have dupes or errors. I have a few questions: 1) I want to create more than one Runtime. So I copy the Download folder to somewhere else and create my 2nd runtime in there. But the Download folder contains only Libraires. Is it okay to put the Geometries and Textures that relate to the items in that librairy or must I leave them in the original Runtime? 2) What difference is there between the Librairies/Materials folder and the Runtime/Materials folder? 3) I would like to have a Runtime for Sara, one for the MilPeople2, one for the MilPeople3, one for all the rest of the people, and finally, one for all the rest of Poser items (animals, environments, etc.). Is that okay? Thanks. France

1) You can put the textures and geometries in the new runtime. Some people prefer to keep them in the main runtime because there are products for different characters that share geometries or textures. For example, a dress package that includes dresses for V3, SP, and the Girl, that all use the same textures. It's kind of a waste to put the textures in each runtime, if you have separate runtimes for each character.
  1. Haven't a clue. I hadn't even noticed there were two.

  2. That should work. See the link for a previous discussion on ways to organize your runtimes.

The files in the library are the ones you see, the ones you can use directly. In case you acquired some other package, one with, say, backgrounds, or wood textures, then you can put this in the Runtime>Materials folder so that it is not too difficult to find. As for the runtimes you suggest...yes and no. It depends. In case P5 asks for a certain file, then note it, and copy it from the basic Runtime into the new one. Example: V2 upgrade came without the milwom object that came with Zygote V1. It is also best to keep the daz people files in the original runtime. You can have runtimes for people, animals, scifi, architecture, fantasy, realism,...just like you fancy. And if you ever find you have too many, you can merge them easily. It sounds great to have many runtimes, but I personally reduced the number drastically. One I find very useful is one for freestuff. Try it out, and if it is what you hoped it was, add it to the "real" one.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

Randym... I just read the other message and the last message says that even if we put the M3-V3-S3 in a different runtime, we have to leave the !DAZ (delta, etc.) in the main runtime. Is that really so? Thanks again. France

France, the !DAZ folder has to be in the default Poser 5 runtime because this is the first place where P5 looks for them. If they are not there it simply hangs up or it takes forever to load.

My suggestion: create a folder in your Poser 5 directory and name it ie MilPeople3. Open Poser and add this folder to your runtimes inside P5. Close Poser again. When you now look into this folderin Windows Explorer you will see that P5 has added a complete runtime structure - no need to copy the download folder or anything, let P5 do this for you.

Next you install V3/M3 etc. into this new directory. When you have finished installing all your Mil3 people you simply copy the !DAZ folder over to the P5 runtime. Always leave a copy of that folder in your MilPeople3 runtime. When you install updates etc. you can always copy the updated !DAZ folder to the P5 runtime and you do not have to worry if anything is in place.

I've attached an image of my seperate Runtimes in P5 to give you an idea.

What Puntomaus said. I like to keep my main runtime lean and mean. (It may just be my imagination, but Poser seems to run faster that way.) I have very little in it except the original Poser 5 content. Each DAZ character has its own runtime. But I do copy the !DAZ folder to the main runtime. You have to remember to do this whenever you install a new DAZ character, or apply an upgrade or SR for an existing one.

I have installed Poser 5 on my C drive and there is nothing at all in that runtime folder except from the stuff that the installation throws in there. I got everything installed on my D drive in different runtime folders. The first time I loaded Vic 3 Poser had a problem finding the files, but now, 1 month later I don't have any problems anymore.

Jaager had some good tips at PoserPros for the organisation of Poser 5. He suggested strongly that the main P5 Runtime be kept lean-- I'd noticed that early on, I think it does play a part at least in loading the program. He also suggested that all the Geometries be kept in the main runtime and all the textures be consolidated in one folder outside of a runtime. I think he's very right about the geoms because Poser looks for them first in P5. However, the amount of Correct Reference that would have to be done on my gigs of Poser material have kept me from consolidating the texture files. I don't know if I'd live that long.LOL! Removing Content Paradise is also recommended for quick operation. These tips and more are included in a "sticky" at poserpros.com in the Poser 5 forum-- easy to find. And a very good place to go for P5 help. I run all my runtimes except P5 from a Firewire drive. All !DAZ folders are in the main runtime-- I'm not sure it is possible with my big overhead to use them anywhere else. I have to use a laptop-- disability probs-- and no laptop is big enough to hold all my runtimes a Paint prog and have scratch space enough to operate Poser. I cheated when I transferred from desktop to laptop and simply copied runtimes. Cross your fingers, so far it has worked very well. Sometimes I have crashes involving the Material room but that was after several hours of posing and the program gets "tired". I have V3 Runtime, "Guy"s runtime-- for unimesh M, D and Hulk; SP3 runtime and theme runtimes-- Pinup/Playgirls; Halloween/Goth; Aldara Project for Rdna; New Avengers Project which I haven't got started yet. Haven't built my Sci-fi Runtime yet. Oh, and one runtime just for props, sets and lights. Good luck finding your style Emily

I have decided to have only 2 runtimes: one for people and one for the rest (animals, buildings, etc.). Now I'd like to know if I have to leave a Runtime folder in the folder where Poser is installed or if I can put both my runtimes on my D: drive. Thanks again. France

You need to leave the main runtime in the Poser folder. But you don't have to put anything in it. Except the !DAZ folder, if you're using any generation 3 DAZ figures. The problem with DAZ's morph injected figures is kind of odd. Most people find they have to have the !DAZ folder in the main Poser runtime. But a few people have no problem at all. If you find it suddenly takes forever to inject the morphs, the problem is likely the !DAZ folder.

Ok, thanks, I'll try leaving it empty and see what happens. France
