Subject: NOOB Question about funky walks

autorenderphreak ( ) posted Fri, 15 October 2004 at 9:05 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 12:12 AM

This is probably a common question - I noticed that during sometime during a walk sequence, one or two frames will have the knee doing something really weird, such as snapping inward. What causes this? How do I prevent it? ARP

Is this the famous "Gimbal Lock"??

I know nothing about walk cycles since I never do animation but I can tell you that it isn't gimbal lock.

Gimbal lock is the weird thing that happens when you rotate an object about the X Y and Z axes. You'd imagine that the model would remember which is which and move accordingly, right? Wrong. Eventually, one or more of the rotations will start to behave in a weird way and not move how you'd expect.

I think it is caused by the figure being a different height than the walk designer expects it to be. There is not much you can do about it except fixing the frames that are wrong by hand.

Is there way to fix it in Walk Designer?

ynsaen ( ) posted Sat, 16 October 2004 at 11:03 PM

That would be a no. Also, Walk designer does not work well with figures that are not grouped using the standard poser settings -- notably Victoria and Michael.

thou and I, my friend, can, in the most flunkey world, make, each of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)

That is understandable, when the walk designer was written there was no such thing as victoria or michael.

Ah - makes good sense. Is there an updated walk designed that can work with Vic and Mike? ARP

Nerd has made walk designer things to make victoria 3 and michael 3 work (at the link ) but they are not free.
