THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP - But it somehow almost feels like cheating...

The picture on the left is cropped from one I took at Windsor Castle a few months ago. I tried it as a lattice a couple times and didn't like the rsult so I created the height map to the right. Roobol has a tut on a similar method...this is probably a little less precise but the result, which I'll post next, is interesting.

I did this render using a light dome inside a HDRI. The wall and ground textures are both from the same trip as the door photo. I suppose the next step is to create a separate mesh for the door so I can have it open a bit, but... As much as I like to use photo textures this almost feels like cheating. Granted the height map makes the door rivets stand out more as well as the "mail slot" and the shadowing is nice still... Maybe leveraging the power of Bryce's lattice abilities isn't cheating, no matter what modeling purists might say. Thoughts? You be the jury of popular opinion. (Yes I know the step needs fixing and a few other touch ups, don't be quite that nit-picky) :)

quite nice. depending on the lighting conditions and the angle of the render's POV, you could always just crop the door itself and use it as the texture of a negative boolean into the wall :)

Yeah, I wanted to get depth in the arch though too. More graduated than sharp ya know?

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2004 at 2:31 PM

oh no, absolutely. i mean this is miles better than what i suggested. i'm just saying a quick fix might be that as well. excellent shots btw :)

Great shot... no it's not cheating, just artistic enhancement... ;)

Everything in the render aspect looks great, my only concern would be the gold material on the sword. Either a bit dirtier or more reflective to pick up some reflective noise. May have to place something paralell to the reflective surface out of site. Ahhh, maybe a wrought iron gate which would also cast some slight shadow(out of site of course. My .02

Not cheating in the least...I agree with mrscience.

Great Job!!

My god man, never leave a sword resting on point!!!! Looks great to me, I gotta get up close and personal with the gradient lab in psp, heightmaps have alwys been a pain...this looks terrific, realistic textures make things look realistic, no cheating there...

Darling, pleas leave your sword outside.... :-) Yeah, the sword stands out too much. And why would it be cheating? It's a feature of Bryce. Use it!

Thank you! This is a seriously great technique.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Put this in a LDRI dome setup so the sword has an environment to reflect and it would be perfect!

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

That's obviously NOT the entrance to a temple! 'Cos Vicky left her sword outside..:-))) Cheers, Diolma (And I gottta work out how to use that technique; consider this a bookmark..)

LOL to elrik and to Diolma! great stuff Claymor, I thought it was another reference pictures, then I saw the sword... yes it needs some touch up. Personally I'd invert the bump map in the left wall. great, great work anyway! vasq
