Subject: !!! 7725 !!! unfound files, how do you fix that !?

peevee ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 11:32 AM · edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 6:34 PM

It appears that my poser directory contains a couple of characters, objects, whatever that cannot ( and do not ) function because of bad references. This problem could be fixed by correctreference but since it indicates they are unfound, I think I have to fix that manually. I was kind of hoping that there was a solution to this, because 7725 files to find and place where they have to be is the 13th labor of Hercules... ( thow it isn't spoken of as much as the others lol ) So if there is some way of dealing with this, please let me know... HAPPY NEWYEAR TO ALL OF YOU Peevee

Look through the files that are missing links (not the missing files themselves; the ones that are calling for them). Can you just uninstall some of those instead of fixing them? If it's not something you use often, it'd probably be easier to get rid of it and re-install next time you need it. Hopefully a lot of those would be the cause of several missing files, so you might be able to eliminate the need for three or four textures for each file you get rid of. If you're really die hard, you can start with a fresh, empty runtime, and install stuff as you need it. I don't know that I've ever had that kind of self-control, though. ;)

It's probably not as bad as it looks. A lot of them are probably files you don't even want. P4 MATs if you're a P5 user, or PP MATs if you're P4 user. Leftover files from stuff you deleted. CRPro lets you open Windows Explorer and move/delete files on the spot. Most of my "bad" references were P4 MATs (I'm a P5 user). And it could be that one misplaced file is causing a dozen "unfound references," so you probably don't actually have to change 7,000 references by hand. Don't know about the free version of Correct Reference, but CRPro lets you apply a change to all the MATs calling that file. So if you have an eye pack with 30 eye MATs all calling a bum file, and you need JPGs, fix one, and all of them are fixed.

You just gave me a good reason to buy CRPro. The free version of CorrectReference only lets you fix one reference at a time, it doesn't support that explorer function, and it always scans my drives for texture folders (which takes quite a bit of time on the 440 Gb of disk space I have right now). If you have PP or P5, delete all P4 MAT poses (keep the PP/P5 ones). If you have only P4 without the Pro Pack, delete all PP/P5 mat poses. Some older products and freebies don't put their textures under :Runtime:textures. I've found textures in many places, including the pose/prop folders themzelves. Move them over to a subfolder of :Runtime:textures, then CorrectReference has a much better chance of finding them! My workflow when I install a new item: - scan for textures outside of :Runtime:textures; if present, move them to an appropriate subfolder of :Runtine:Textures; - delete unnecessary MAT pose files/folders; - move the new character/pose/prop/light/expression/camera folder(s) to a more appropriate place in my hierarchy organization (P5 only); - and then run CorrectReference on only the new folders.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

CorrectReference, both versions, allow changing the file references within the application. It is easier in the free version as one can change several unfound reference files a batch at a time. They both allow the option to nullify any text reference that is too hard to find or is not worth the effort. CorrectReferenc Pro allows you to check out geometry reference. In some cases the obj file got lost on transfer to a new computer. If I couldn't find the Obj outside the Runtime being checked, i got rid of the library item requiring the obj. Some new P5 CR2's create the obj file in the library itself and not in the geometries file but those can be replaced within Correct Pro. I run CorrectReference on all new downloads. I also ran CorrectReference in all files previously on Poser4.
