Hey Doc,

Just had to show you this. Will I've been waiting for your house tutorial to finish, I decided to do something on my own using in Poser your tutorials. They really do come in handy. A smokehouse that my grandfather used many years ago was destroyed when hurricane Hugo came through here in 1989. I decided to try to rebuild it in 3D just for fun. How's it looking so far? Sill have the front siding boards to put on and the front and rear upper boards...along with the tin roof.

And here is the wireframe...it's getting to be a little difficult to see what goes where.

Doc, Here is the latest incarnation of the smokehouse. All done in Poser using your tutorials, the magic box, truncated pyramid, 9 foot scale, and the short tutorial for making the ridge cap. The tin panel was made for me by TMGraphics. I had enough siding boards remaining from the real smokehouse to shoot some photos of them for textures for the model. Every board in this thing is an individual board. It's still a work in progress as there are a couple of small details I need to add (some corner boards and the stone foundation) but essentially, it's done. After I finish this, I'm going to try to recreate my grandfather's barn, which has long been gone (torn down many years ago when I was still a kid) but I do have some measurements of it and some photos.

That is the nicest looking prop I have ever seen. Excellent...excellent job!

geep ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2005 at 5:53 AM

Hi cherokee69,

Your attention to detail is way above average.
... so, ... who says you can't make models using Poser. huh?! ;=]

I love the job you did on the texmaps! - Excellante !!! YES!!!

But, um, er, uh, how didja git da lighting inside da smokehouse, huh, huh, huh? ;=]
(your rendering is excellent, also)

So, um, after the barn, what's next? ... the Taj Mahal maybe? ;=]

cheers,
dr geep
;=]

P.S. Don't look now, but you're making a tut. All you need to do is fill in the details, no? ;=]

Doc, Got all the boards on and thought I'd post an image of the smokehouse from the bottom. My only problem now is getting it all together as one prop but still be able to texture each board and tin roof panel (there are 8 of them) and to have the door to open. Any suggestions Doc?

This is what the real smokehouse looked like after hurricane Hugo got through with it. After all these years, I just haven't had the heart to finish it off and now I'm glad I didn't. At least it gave me something to get some measurements from.

re: " ... Any suggestions Doc?"

Yes, I have a couple. ;=]

Try this.

  1. Select each object (prop) one at a time.

  2. Use the Grouping Tool to:

  3. Make a "New Group" and name it appropriately, e.g., side panel, roof, etc.

  4. "Add All"

  5. "Assign Material" and use the same name as the group

  6. Exit the Grouping Tool after you have done all the objects

  7. Export all the parts (objects - EXCEPT the door) and CHECK "Include existing groups ..."

  8. Import the (single) object back into Poser.
    (Doc's "glue") ;=]
The imported prop should look exactly like the exported objects, textures and all.

If it's ok, save it as a prop so you can delete the individual pieces. (unless you want to save them separately for some other use)

  1. Position the door where you want it and change it's origin to the side where the door is hinged.
Change xOrigin and (perhaps) zOrigin. The yOrigin should not be important.

  2. Parent the door to the smokehouse and save it as a (compund, i.e. both pieces) prop in your library.

And ...

That's all there is to it! ... Simple, huh? ... ;=]

P.S. I suggest you save your project as a separate .pz3 file. (before you change anything per my post above) Then, if anything goes ka-blooey!!! ... you can always drop back to your previous known setup. Just a thought. ;=]

Doc, I had been doing that with the different parts..like left wall, tin roof, frame, etc. The frot, back, and right side walls are clones of the left wall. When I exported everything, I was hoping to have each main part available in materials on the Objects drop down menu and then each part of that piece in the materials drop down menu. Didn't work that way, but it's done, textured, and working good...I guess. Seems to be anyway. Guiess I'm off to start working one the barn.

geep ( ) posted Mon, 17 January 2005 at 7:27 AM

If you "grouped" (and named) the objects before you "glued" them together, they should still be available as separate groups when you select the main object and use the Grouping Tool.

The materials, of course, are available in the Surface Material window (or Material Room in P5).

P.S. Don't cha fergit ta post us a pic of that there barn when ya gits one now, ya hear.

Just dropped in. This is great and I went and looked at your other models. Very detailed. Where can I find this tutorial? Also, are these going to be made avaialbe for sale or freebies anywhere anytime soon?

Geep's tuts are at the above link. Since these building are kind of personal (they are the building on my grandfather's farm and some no long exist) I hadn't considered offering them either in free stuff or the MP. Might change my mind about later after I finish the all. Still have the house to do but it's going to be a real pain.

I probably am, mainly because it's something different to do in Poser. I just don't want to fall into the rute that everyone else seems to be in....not being able to do anything in Poser unless there is a naked, semi-naked, or clothed figure in it. Not too many people understand that an image doesn't have to have a figure in the finished pic.

geep ( ) posted Sun, 06 March 2005 at 10:19 AM

Ok, I'll put it on my list of things "to do" (in '06). (just kidding) ;=]
