Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 08 10:28 pm)
Some people are not going to be happy about this. I can hear the screaming already. The merchant cut will drop! The Chicken Coop will be closed! The genital props and bdsm gear will be purged from the store! Nudity will be banned from galleries!
But I have hope that DAZ will leave it more or less alone. Why bother to buy another site that will be just like DAZ3D.com? They were going to buy it awhile back, and leave Mehndi in charge.
Besides, the naughty stuff is very profitable. That may be what they mean with all that talk about "synergy": a way to get a cut of the hot market for more adult Poser stuff, without sacrificing their family-friendly image.

If anyone sees a mind wandering aimlessly around..... It is mine.
I want it back.
I, for one, haven't seen much truly "naughty stuff" for sale at Poserpros. A few items, sure......but not many. Certainly nothing like the items that Renderosity used to carry in quantity until recently.
About the only thing that I've seen over there is that set for Ingenue Vicky......other than that, there's not much that I can think of. Perhaps they intend to offer more items along those lines? Surprising, if true.
As for the new owners -- I wish them the best with it.
I'll continue to be a customer, no matter what their forum policies turn out to be.
I'll buy lots of stuff here, too.
Remember, there are a bunch of little stores out there too as some merchants (looks around innocently) have their own sites from which they sell their products and there are more and more popping up lately. I'd venture to say the PhilC does well on his site. There are other bands of merchants running sites like Oddity Foundry and I believe FaerieWylde has a store. There's also RDNA, for another sizable conglomerate of merchants. There are really a bunch of them out there - too many to mention - and I find them all the time.
.
It is a legal bizarity that something that is created by someone long enough ago can be acquired by someone else who then gets a copyright on it because of some work he did on something that wasn't his creation.
But yeah, since Irak we know the means and methods of mass distraction....

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)
Very very sad news.... soon the poser world will look like the real world, a couple of mega-companies charging outrages prices, destroying our cosy little local stores. With all of the recent moves DAZ is making it's becoming more clear and clear, they're trying to take over the poser world and before we know all of us are subjects in the great DAZ Empire.
Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(
Food for thought.....

Well, I for one think its great! I dont know the whole story, but just think about it, if DAZ (a reputable company, who is bloody fantastic at what they do)didnt buy Poser Pros and instead some random, I dont think poser Pros would actually last much longer than 3 or 4 months Tops! But with DAZ buying Poser Pros, we all know it must turn out for the best, right? Thats my opinion... and all I have to say....Thanx
I just hope Poser Pros won't become a second rate back office to DAZ, with the best artists being sold at AZ, with DAZ prices and DAZ commercial strategies : Here is a great brand new product. Oh and you have to buy this also to get it work. Oh and this also is mandatory. Yes, it's a pack, but we sell it as 3 separate packs. No, sorry, you can't buy anything related to another product because we hired all the good merchants to work for this product. But we bought that nicey little second rate site where you can buy product for poor losers like you. You get the idea...
At first, I was thinking, "yes, I know that's rare LOL," Daz wanted a Non Disney site. After reading the Daz announcement, the stated, minor TOS changes, I don't think so. I'm thinking it will be another family site. Say good bye to the Gallery. I also think there will be a change in the store. Is this a bad thing? Won't know till it's done and we get a chance to see what really has been changed. I too hope there will still be the great buys, but Daz, I'm just guessing, would rather have you sign up as a PC member. Might be a benifit there?

Bad, bad news. I just came out of the DAZ platinum club because the poserpros pro club was better value and had a better diversity of stuff. The DAZ platinum club only seems to cater for Aiko or other anime types at the moment. Shit I'm really gutted at this news! Don't get me wrong, I like DAZ but poserpros should have stayed as it was IMHO.
Injustice will be avenged.

Unfortunately, that wasn't possible. Through no fault of DAZ's.
Steve K over at DAZ says one of the reasons DAZ bought PoserPros was that they wanted the site to survive. (And yes, before the buyout, PP's survival was in question.)

According to the Announcement at DAZ, the Gallery will remain as is. With the comments comparing DAZ to Disney, I think this is their Touchstone, so to say.

Yeah, I doubt Poser Pros would have stayed as it was, given the recent events. So, in that respect, I think DAZ did a good thing. It always seems, though, that anything they do is viewed as a bad thing. I have good hopes. If anything, this keeps Poser Pros as a place where we can still go for Poser 5 (and beyond) stuff. If DAZ hadn't bought it, I wonder if we would still have had that option?
As far as the "naughty items" in the store at PP are concerned.....they offer -- uh -- anatomically correct models for sale. But that's about it. I've only seen one "naughty" set other than the genital models: the one for Ingenue Vicky.
PP has never offered tons of dungeon sets or props for sale. And I'd be very surprised if they started to do so now.
I don't know if they'll pull the genital models. We'll see. I am not staying up nights worrying about the issue.
I've got a feeling that PP might begin to concentrate on the learning-site aspect of its existence.....and that DAZ will begin to shut down the political/social debate aspect (I.E. intellectual jello-vat wrestling). Some people won't like it, but that's life. ((That's English for C'est la vie.))
IMO - DAZ is a great company, and deserves our support. I fully intend to give them that support: and I encourage others to do so.
The only "great company" I know are my friends....
As for business, the 2 only kind of companies I know are companies I buy from and companies I don't buy from.
I don't give any support nor expect gratitude : I give money and I expect goods corresponding to the money I spent.

shrug
That's a perfectly legitimate way to look at the matter........
However, companies are collections of individuals. Not faceless entities dwelling in a tower beyond the mountains. Therefore, companies are subject to all of the follies of men.......
Whatever.....they've got my vote.

Ingenue Vickie says her set isn't naughty, it is just rendered that way...I'm hoping that DAZ has a light hand at Poser Pros.

I think that people have reason to be nervous about the TOS changes, based on what TOS changes led to here. I'd hope Daz are looking to take advantages of the differences. Others have mentioned the Disney use of the Touchstone brand as an example. Turning Poser Pros into another squeaky-clean site doesn't make sense to me.
Frankly I'm all for it - now DAZ has an outlet to expand a bit more. It wasn't that long ago members at DAZ were upset over knowing that all the add-on products for the K-family would be removed because DAZ doesn't support products not sold at DAZ (although no merchants complained because we already know it's always a possibilty). Now they can/will - that's a good thing for DAZ and probably for the merchants, if product get pulled inthe future perhaps the add-ons will simply be transferred to PP.

I've never seen anything wrong with the TOS at Renderosity or DAZ3D. One big problem in the Poser communities is the tendency of some people to act out, with insults and threats. Too often this behavior was allowed to go on for awhile without being challenged. Insults and threats are not a part of "Free Speech." Renderosity has become a friendlier place since the Moderators started cracking down.
I don't see DAZ as oppressive. There's a lot of stimulating and sometimes heavy discussions there. Some people are heavy-handed in their arguments, without resorting to insults or threats. The enforcement of DAZ TOS is uneven, I get the impression these moderators are new at their jobs, and unsure of themselves.
PS: DAZ does not publicly announce any bannings.

I guess no one's thought of the fact that prices will probably go up there and that there will be 2 stores where Daz holds sway? When prices go up one place they go down in another...but only for awhile. They then creep up to beyond what they were. At that point, those of us that are hobbyists will be priced right out of the Poser scene and won't be able to afford what we used to. That, or their'll be a lot of first borns given away... I don't like what Daz' buying of Poser Pro's signifies: a narrowing of the market that can only hurt and not help. And this is coming from someone that loves Daz (I have a couple products there and I have absolutely TONS of Daz items). A few people have mentioned a couple other stores. No disrespect to them, but PPros was possibly the fourth largest (maybe 3D Commune neck and neck), right behind Daz, ROsity and RDNA. After PoserPros, the next largest (or lucritive you might say), pales in comparrison and has a wide gap between. Unless most of us run to those other, smaller stores, Daz will get what they want - a much, MUCH bigger chunk, and therefore control, of the poser product market. I just don't see it as being a good thing. Laurie
My disgust with DAZs' purchase of PP is based on the fact that they do NOT represent the best quality a product can be (I'm speaking of DAZ originals here, not their brokered items Jim).
The products are not the best they can be. They're the least they can get away with. Because the next version will be better (and hell, if we can spread this across 6 versions look at the money we'll make).
What makes you think they won't pull anything (or refuse it) they don't want competing with them? That and the appearance that they do not seem to conduct business with the same "wholesome" approach that they deem to shove down everyones' throat guised as "family" values.
The spread of mediocrity...let's all watch

Better perhaps! A new site (based on former admins and merchants) with the same ethos may well have formed. To develop a site that would support the number of admins and merchants that PP had would take money ... either to transfer the existing content or to develop an entirely new back end and storefront. Poser Pros wasn't built in a day, and a new site won't happen that quickly either. The easiest and best solution for the PoserPros community was to have someone purchase it. And there weren't really very many candidates that would have that kind of cash. DAZ and CL were the most likely candidates. There isn't anything to stop anyone from starting a new community, it will just take time to nurture and grow it.
I don't think prices will go up. DAZ's strategy seems to be to make this hobby/addiction as cheap as possible. They want to expand their customer base, making less profit on each item, but selling a lot more units. Look at how prices have dropped. First the Platinum Club, which forced other stores to lower prices, too. Now V3, M3, A3, etc., are free. And they're giving away D|S. I don't think it's an evil plan to kill Curious Labs. I think it's an attempt to reach a broader audience, and turn them into customers for their content.
And the broader the customer base, the lower the prices generally are. Hobbyists aren't going to spend a lot of money on a model or a texture. DAZ would have to be insane not to realize this. I think prices will be going more in the Sims direction, rather than in the Turbosquid direction.
I think you might have missed the point I was trying to make. All of those sites started small and grew large. And as I said, there is nothing stopping anyone from starting a new site. However, the issue at hand was that PoserPros was in danger of folding. There was only ONE solution that could happen very quickly to keep it alive: someone had to buy it, as is, from Mehndi Studios. They were the owners of the site .. the physical appearance, basic content, structure of the store, layout of the pages, and so on. Let's say instead that the existing staff wanted to keep it alive. THey very well could have, but they would have had to buy the rights from Mehndi Studios. The only other alternative is STILL an alternative to anyone who wants to do it ... and that is to create a new site. However, it won't BE PoserPros any more, because you would not be able to use Mehndi Studio's design and back end. You would have to develop and design your own, which takes time. Then, if the merchants were still interested after all that time, you'd have to gather them back together. THAT solution could take months. DAZ gave PoserPros a solution that was immediate, and which was the best solution possible to keep that community intact as it now stands. Give them a chance before you knock it down. It very well might work.
I did not miss the point, I am just suggesting that it could have been done, and still could be.
Things are a little easier these days, there is lots of software around and people in the community to make it work that was not so accessible then.
Yet, they did it.
More importantly there are many merchants who have the money, as a consequence of the commercialisation of poser, that can contribute as a group (as shareholders) into making such sites happen quickly and professionally.
What seems to be missing is the will to do this even though the doing of it seems to have become easier.
I think we have all become a little complacent in the face of commercial take-overs.
