I'm trying to get the object I'm pointing at to look like netting. I can't seem to get the right material and (watch out here's a technical term) see-throughness, that you would get with a net. Anyone have any ideas or techniques?

Oh and feel free to rip the model apart as well. Any C&C welcome.

"see throughness" = transparency

Creating a net texture is actually kind of easy...it will be getting it to flow and sag in the right places that will be more difficult.

Try something like this image for the transmap or perhaps something with more space between the white bits.
But if this is modeled in Bryce it will probably come out too even rather than stretched.
If it is modeled in something like Wings you could UV map it.

bandolin ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 2:34 PM

The netting part was made in Wings. Plz don't tell me to UVMap. I can't get the hang of that program. I've tried a bunch of tuts and my examples never look like the ones pictured. I'm just stupid.

I did a ballista and some chainmail patterns on poser shirts. With anything curvy like this believe it or not the best mapping was object cubic. With parametric there were huge differences in hole sizes between one portion and the other of the object.

want it?

Claymor ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 2:42 PM

Nah...intelligence has nothing to do with it. UVmapping is an odd deal. The beauty of the fact that you did it in wings though is that you can paint the transmap. woohoo!!

drac no doubt read the original thread, leapt into wings, and banged out a net in 15 - 20 seconds. nicely done.

bandolin ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 2:48 PM

Yes Drac I want that. That's what I want. Gimme.

Model looks good :) Did the model come from a refernce image, cos I like its detail. One little question - can the bottom bucket/weight of the trebuchet swing through (as the arm launches the missile) without hitting the ground as it swings - can't tell from this angle.

I created the entire thing from scratch in Bryce with a little help from Wings. The reference image came from an article from my local newpaper on "How catapults married science, politics and war." The reference was a very bad wood cut illustration. So I had to use a fair amount of imaination.

Yeah, you're probably right about the counter-weight bucket. It'll most likely hit the ground, but hey, it ain't posable and its not as if little poserites will be using it to seige bryce made fortifications.

I'll be posting it in the freebies area, as soon as I find the most economical way to host it somewhere.

Only problem I can see is that if you use a fully enclosed net it either has to throw the net along with the rocks or have a fairly complex system for getting it to open at the right time. I think a trebuchet really used more of a sling like deal.

Jim564 ( ) posted Thu, 03 March 2005 at 12:01 AM

I was getting ready to follow comment along Claymor's line. If you insist on a net, and realism is almost a requirment, the net really should be more like a bucket, with some solid straps holding the edges to up and apart. Draculaz' offering would be perfect if the grid stopped before it started to taper to a "point." Jim PS I have absolutely no idea how go about this. :-)

TwistedBolt ( ) posted Thu, 03 March 2005 at 2:06 AM

If I am seeing dracks model right...it appears to have thickness already...so no trans map needed.

I eat babies.

bandolin ( ) posted Thu, 03 March 2005 at 7:10 AM

Of course you're right about the sling net. I was just being lazy. I'll give it another try. Making ropes and nets in Bryce isn't easy.
