Seems they will (According to post #33 above)!

"Creasing control..." sounds like the smoothing option other apps have, possibly means you wont have to split vertices to avoid over smoothing?..a wild guess,lol..but we live in hope ;)(makes diplacement mapping alot easier for props) "- Save all of the materials on a figure or prop as an easy-to-access Material Collection" very handy :) any ideas when people will be getting it & posting results?

I must say CL has done a good job with Poser 6. The Wires of the figures are very interesting! They look very well modeled. I'm not very interesed in the new Renderer but the new figures and the new content are looking very promising. When does shipping starts again? Can't wait! ;) Greets Chris

Do they state clearly that the Face Room works with the new figures? The image and text is the same for Poser 5 for that feature... the new characters look very good, it would be a shame if the Face Room could not be used with them. Anyway this look to be a good upgrade and I'm happy I preordered it at the special Early Adopter price :)

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 2:56 AM · edited Fri, 11 March 2005 at 2:57 AM

One would think that they've made it possible to use both the existing Poser 5 figures in the FaceRoom as well as the new figures. It is hoped anyway!

I may give CL a call tomorrow to see what the situation is. If they need records (emails, scanned receipts, etc.), these can be provided. Just hoping that it is not two hours on the phone - I am a very busy person who programs/develops between 12-18/7.

Jessie James? Odd to have names that sound the same. I can see the mixup now. hehe. ;)

Hum (shy). I don't post a lot on the forum, I watch it but I usually don't post, I'm pretty shy :) But, if, if Poser 6 finally supports smoothing groups (creasing) then it's probably the best possible news for modelers (this with better shadows :))

narcissus ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 3:32 AM

The truth is Jessy looks more high resolution then James... So I don't think they can use the same morphs like Don-Judy... I believe that if people welcome those figures as it looks the textures won't be a problem. As for clothes the P5 people came with a quite big wardrobe so the P6 would have their own too,I believe... It's nice for all people to have a good base of content by default...It's a pity that many underestimate what they already... I was happy with P5 (after I upgrade my PC) and I'm sure I'll like P6 too...(although I'll wait quite a long before I get it...) pitklad

Man, everything does look great :D I just don't understand why the tenacity of holding onto Content Paradise. :/ It would have been better IMHO to just have a separate module/program - I gather it uses Internet Explorer (for windows anyways) as the underlying engine but here's where the problems start. Plus, the whole browser in a program idea I think is really dated and doesn't always execute well. Some of us would rather communicate with our browser or browser of choice. Personally, I know where RDNA, Sixus1, Cubed and those sites are. I think I know where Renderosity is - I'll have to double-check. ;)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:24 AM

Hmm... It looks like a couple more tools on the tool bar icon thingy (there's a finger for morphing). Not having to do so much stitching of sequences will please the animators. 4 rendering engines ought to provide enough flexibility. What amuses me is the possibilities for people who like to play. This tidbit under lighting: "Set specular & diffuse controls for individual lights. For example, use a diffuse only negative light to darken a specific area of any 3D scene." A negative light? Can you see drow or evil demigods bringing their own shadows with them? Or a tax collector darkening the doorstep? Or a cursed castle? Or adding a raincloud to a scene with diffuse darkness under it? Yes, I can tweak in PhotoShop, but doing it in 3d inside the renderer where I can still move the camera is so much better! I'm looking forward to using point lights... not needing 6 lights per candle or will-o-the-wisp means that I can put more into a scene. (As much as I like Anton's "Candleworks", that is a LOT of lights.) I really wish that there were new animals, but maybe with Cubed being a part of Content Paradise, we can nudge a bit harder to get them. Since most people render images with people in them, I'll have to accept that focus on providing new humans (and they look really great, especially James). And if the new figures have some accessories (like clothes and hair), it will be a lot better than buying a nude figure, and also HAVING to buy 3 morph packs so she can speak, separate skin texture, and a new wardrobe and wig. Including a complete figure is good value. Having 4 of them is great value. Having the extra figures from RDNA and Sixus1 just makes it sweeter... the difference is a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a banana sundae with sprinkles, syrup, and cherries. :) I also wish that the skeletons were for the new figures... using that subsurface scattering for a translucent figure with a skeleton inside? Besides victims of evil scientists getting hit by a lightning bolt or obscure radiation, there are charming evryday uses such as a hand cupping a candleflame. Not perfect. It won't please everybody. There will be hairballs on the carpet. But I expect that for the next year, the experts here will be pulling tidbits out and saying "gee, look at this!" and our eyestalks will swivel as we take a closer look. Little lightbulbs will go on, and someone will giggle hysterically as they go running off to build a scene with the new feature. Hmm... that new depth/atmosphere control ought to make underwater scenes easier to assemble... and not just for mermaids, what about under the ice of Europa? So many ideas, so little time.... The purpose of CP isn't, and never has been, to replace the current sites. Ultimately, it's there to make things easier for folks. The idea is sound, the execution is what bit. Looking closer at some other elements in P5, though, I'm fairly certain "turning it off" will be possible again, though not quite as easily, and for a reason that may bug some folks. My personal observations on the structure of P5 is that it is sorta halfway done in a lot of ways. I think that the parts I see that are "halfway" done are now very much all the way done. Which means that the display system has been shifted pretty much into an xml system fully -- that's the new window structurte. XML means some sort of browser, no matter how you look at it. In this case, the application itself. SInce it is designed for two latforms, it is possible they basically shifted the interface into a built in parser, or, in short, they made their own browser, and CP is intended to use that directly or via a bridge of some sort into the underlying browser in use by the OS. That said, though, there's no question the main thrust of CP is towards the newer users or business users, who want a simple conduit directly to the content without the vagaries of forums and other stuff. They don't care about that stuff -- they just want to be able to find things, lol. (in short: I think CP is now more integrated, and while it annoys us, it might not annoy the newer users)

The purpose of CP isn't, and never has been, to replace the current sites. Never said it was ;) I see it as a direct channel to featured sites. That's great. But so is a just creating a web shortcut and clicking on it and letting your prefered browser pick up the URL. I may be missing the point of a "web browser". A good site design can feature a cohesively built marketplace and search facility if that's needed. Again, I may be missing the point of "web site". No bash here and I'm looking forward to this program but I think Paradise will be a flop the second time around. Like giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a dead person. :D But just my opinion, I'm sure it will be fabulous.

odeathoflife, I also noticed that Zygote is mentioned as a partner. It makes me wonder if they had a had a hand in designing the new P6 meshes. Surely their name wouldn't be mentioned so prominently if it was just in reference to Dork and Posette;) Besides, the Jessie and James meshes appear so different from the other figure meshes in the past in the way they appear to be modeled. I wonder if e-frontier coughed up the $$$ to have Zygote design the new models? If you look at the Zygote site, it seems as though the medical field wasn't lucrative enough for them, so they've started branching back out into other things, again;) In all honesty, Dork and Posette were very good and useful at the time Poser 4 was released and with what Poser was capable of then. How would anyone know at the time how long it would be until Poser 5 was released, and how all of us would learn to get the most out of Poser 4 in the meantime;) Just my theory. I'll be very interested to see how things turn out. If I'm wrong, then that should be a compliment to whomever the artist(s) are who modeled the P6 meshes, they look very, very professional! -hOss69

ynsaen ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:56 AM

"Surely their name wouldn't be mentioned so prominently if it was just in reference to Dork and Posette;)" Well, note that the Zygote today is the part of Viewpoint that survived -- and that Viewpoint is what Metacreations became. So there's a bit more than just a reference to content, period, going on ;) Hell, I'm just glad they added a point light. Everything else is gravy for me, lol

Looks good. There are a lot more new features than I had originally expected. I think it's great, but I suspect there will be a bit of a learning curve. We're only now learning to fully use P5 features like the hair room and material room. I hope it doesn't take as long to figure out the P6 features! And it looks like being a merchant is going to become even more complicated, with P4, PP, P5, P6, and D|S to support.

I, too, noticed the difference in mesh density between Jessi and James. I hope it is just the high-res vs. the low-res version. Even without the mesh, James' face looks noticeably "low-res" to me.

They do look quite different from the Mil people - notably, their very deep eyes and low brows. It's a different look, but very Caucasian-looking. Makes me wonder how well they will do non-Caucasian characters.

I do like what I see of the kids. Looks like they fill the age gap between the Young Teens and the Pre-Schoolers. (But no new baby? Or are we supposed to buy the Cubed ones?)

Interesting that LaRoo is included. Perhaps all the content they are showing in their promos is included, which would mean Koz's hair is, too.

I, too, am disappointed that there are no new animals. The P4 animals are hopelessly outdated. They could've at least gotten Lyne to do new textures for them or something.

Now I can hardly wait to get my hands on P6. I wonder if there's any chance they'll ship earlier than Mar. 21?

Well it seems like Curious Labs is finally launching a serious attack on DAZ's empire.... If these new figures are as good as they do look and if they can finally get the Content Paradise running as it's supposed to, DAZ has some very serious competition.... and I've got a reason not to shop at DAZ anymore. These new characters look so much better then M3, V3 and the lot of them do.

CL should publish, on their website, instructions for removing Content Paradise if the end user (i.e., payor) does not want it there using up ram. Seriously, I think that would be great customer service publicity.

I want to see how the cloth and hair room operate now, myself. Be nice if MS created 'service releases' this nice... We got our bigger frame counter, Opera...! :D No network rendering, darn it. Oh well, I'll just have to stick to Infinite for that. I wonder how 'complete' the exposure is in Python... If it is complete, and Vue Infinite has a similar integration, we may finally have a chance at things like lighting converters/trackers, windforce interaction between the two appswho knows what else...

Gareee ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 7:01 AM

Hmm... there are quite a few nice sentences to mull over from the announcements. "Dark lights", it looks like characters can be possibly cloned instead of loaded again, but possibly share resources, but have different material changes, and some sort of "mimic lite", tying phonemes and expressions to sound files? Some new morph management system, saving an entire character's material files, a more robust python.. lus of course the new main characters. I could pass on alphaman, but that Bot sidekick pal looks pretty dang cool! And I'm sure we'll see some exclusive free Sixus characters tied into the new content paradise, since they are a partner now. Now If I could only hear back from CL and/or Katherine, I'd be even more excited!

Attached Link: http://www.curiouslabs.com/article/articleview/1382/1/580?sbss=580

There are tabs on the right, and the bottom one is "features". The last item is "more features". Click on the icon and you get to a page with a list:

Lighting

  • New Point Lights
  • New Revolve control for lights
  • Set specular & diffuse controls for individual lights. For example, use a diffuse only negative light to darken a specific area of any 3D scene.

That page has some of the other things we are commenting on, such as this one:

  • Depth of Field is enhanced, with new camera controls to achieve the effect of a real camera lens.

Now I am a real photographer. My trusty Minolta SRT101 died after 23 years of hard service and I replaced it with a Nikon F2. I need a camera which will survive a war if it is going to go into the wilderness with me. Hard granite and soft desert talcum powder sands are both destructive. I also have a little digital (my gallery pictures are being taken with it), but it doesn't have any of the controls I'm used to: like being able to manipulate exactly is in focus and how much light is entering and the fun stuff like turning water to milk and the sky purple. So if the rendering controls allow me to shoot a scene with some expectation that the analogy between them is more than a name, I'll be a happy camper.

I'd just like some simple "real world" camera settings. SDomething simple, like loading "fish eye", or "rack focus". or "Telephoto" settings. Yeah give me the ability to tweak what's there, but make it simple for people who stopped using 35 mm 20 years ago. BTW, over 4000 digital cam pics here already. (Over 1200 the first year!) Thank god I can do yearly archives on a burned DVD now.

I doubt that. People are too invested in those characters.

Besides, DAZ is giving them away free now, along with D|S. Not surprisingly, a lot of newbies are D|S users. Not sure they'll ever switch to Poser. Unless they want dynamic cloth and hair.
