Subject: CL site updated for Poser 6!!!

Carolly, I am happy also about emulation of real camera controls, per what is reasonable possible given the metaphor. Its a vote of confidence for the "deep tool making" philosophy. Even if/when 'the movies' go digital, the underlying physics and technique of capturing the light of the world and shaping it on a media pioneered 150 years ago remains relevant. With all due respect gareee I think and hope they are headed in the opposite direction of your wishlist...less CAM/Instamatic and more SLR/Panaflex. IMO this trend toward respect for the principles of photography -- old school photography -- deserves a feeling of thanks and appreciation to Curious Labs. Thanks for treating us like grownups! ::::: Opera :::::

I don't understand why some people always want to make things into some kind of Jihad. IE: "This will KILL Daz". Diversity is good folks. The more models we have the more variety we can have in our characters. and I cincerely hope the quality of these new default characters, spurs Daz to innovate further. I'm really pleased with all of the improvements, they really seem to be putting them where they count. That's pretty atypical for any 3d software release! I'm excited that Laroo is in there. I've always kinda coveted her from afar, but couldn't justify getting her. But for God's sake they could have at least redone that mutant cat :p

hmmmm... looks interesting and impressive. I do have a few questions concerning the new content. 1) Are there any nude full body shots available? I like the look of James' face, but I haven't seen his body. Or Jesse's for that matter. 2) How are the new figures mapped? Don and Judy were pretty much mapped like M2 and V2. Is there new mapping for these figures? Do they use the same textures as Don and Judy or something different? 3) What morphs are available for the new figures? Do they have a complete morph package for them available? 4) Is there any existing figure that they can share clothing with, or will they need new custom clothing? 5) What clothing and textures come with the new figures? 6) Can the new figures be used in P4 and P5, including the new morphing technology? 7) Is the new morphing technology really new, or like the method Dodger uses with the Aeon figures (a different method of injection where channels are loaded as part of a readscript). 8) Do the new figures use a genital switch like the M2/the Dork/Don, or do they have seperate conforming genitalia? 9) Is there any other new content in the way of animals? If so, what? Are these the same animals that we've had since P4? And a couple of questions on cloth and hair: 1) Does collision detection work on strands in the hair room now, fixing the P5 hair room problem? 2) Can negative values be used in both/either the hair and cloth rooms to give a floating up effect when draping?

Gareee ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:30 AM

Operaguy, the only reason I mentioned that, was that most people know what a "fish eye lens" effect is. I don't even have a clue what you would call it in other systems... it's just a popular term, like a rack focus shot. Any system which has some presets that I can easily understand without getting out a calculator is good, IMHO. And pdxjims (BTW, how the heck didja get that nick???) I might do morphs for the new characters, but wanna play with them first, to see what's there. And I also would like to know answers to many of your questions.. we'll have to revisit this list, once P6 is in our hands. Our hands.. I'm part of the maddening crowd now. I'm hip, I'm cool, uh, yeah.... right! ;)

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:38 AM

Don't know about the rest, but collision detection does work in the Hair Room. You just have to keep the hair and the figure low-res enough for your machine to handle the calculations. And you can use negative values to make the hair float. You can get some nice underwater effects that way.

operaguy ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:44 AM

actually, garee, the more they "deep tool" the camera features, the easier it is to lay 'user-friendly' presets in place ON TOP OF the 'true-camera' settings as "saved sets." Could be in the form of a 'Pose' for the camera. ::::: Opera :::::

pdxjims ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:44 AM

Gareee, PDX = Portland International Airport's call letters (I'm in Portland, Oregon) Jim = My name s = My hand slipped when I was on a BBS before the internet achieved it's wide availability, and I've stuck with the name every since. Maybe I should change it to MegaSponge or HyperNoodle... nah. But now you see why I never tried a different one. randym77: I meant collision self detection in the hair room. Whenever I try to use it, I get a wild mop of hair. Good point on the hair and negative values, that really applied to the cloth room, not the hair room.

-Timberwolf- ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:47 AM

The problem is that Hair Collision is randomly ignored ,even in the latest Service Release.

Gareee ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:48 AM

Ah, Jim, thanks. I always wonder where some of the unusual handles and nicks come from.

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:59 AM

I'm not sure that is fixable. It's a resource issue, I'm pretty sure. If you use really low-res hair, and a really low-res collision object, collision works perfectly. High res, and it works imperfectly or not at all. V3 is way too high res to work well, and probably even Judy is, depending on your machine. I suspect we won't get really good, high-res dynamic hair until there's a big improvement in hardware. Or maybe network rendering.

Berserga ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 10:11 AM

Couldn't you attach lowrez invisible objects like a ball, and cube in the places most likely to be intersected, and have THEM be colided with? That would probably work well enough.

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 10:28 AM

Berserga: Yes, that is the way to get around the resource limit. See this thread
for more on this.

DCArt ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 12:25 PM

I think it's more likely that Zygote was mentioned because the older content (humans and animals for P4 and earlier versions) was made by Zygote.

I noticed a coupla mentions up there ^ 'bout the "new" morfing tool & view magnifier tool...they both in P5 already. I'm also curious 'bout whether J&J can wear other figure's textures, but if not, NBD...I'm sure someone in the community will sit down w/ UV mapper & solve that probbem. After all, I have a V3 that wears Posey's skins, a MayaDoll that wears Vicky's skins...it'll come 8-) I'm also disappointed w/ the critters; even if they added a few new ones to the old zoo would be a improvement. Mebbe a rat, a moose, dare I dream of a dragon? & before ya ask Garee; Free(style)Bass(player) 8-)

Ooh, I'd love a rat. I have plenty of dragons, and I don't think I need a moose. But a realistic mouse or rat - now that would come in handy. The House Mouse is too toony-looking, and the DAZ Rat is shaped nicely but its joints are horrible. I want a nice, realistic rodent that can be posed in typical rodenty poses!

west coast scope: friends of mine, very reliable, saw and talked to Ms. Alley at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Swap Meet (they are vendors) recently, and she is WAY WAY thinner. The 'fat' episodes are in the can [pun intended] and she is probably making 'I DID IT' episodes now, and I bet earning performance bonus on her contract with Jenny Craig. ::::: Opera :::::

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:09 PM

Kirstie Alley shops at swat meets???

operaguy ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:28 PM

oh yes. First, you have to understand the swap meet 'ethos' here in Southern California...it's not junk. It supports an army of 'antique and collectable' dealers and their families. And the 'swap meet' cycle is tied to the 'garage sale' cycle. The competition by this army of swapers between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM on a given Saturday morning at garage sales is fierce, brutal, swift and intense. There are four important thriving meets, Rose Bowl, Pasadena CC, Santa Monica and Long Beach. You can 'swap' every Sunday! And Hollywood comes out, everyone from prop people, wardrobe people to actors. Often seen: Diane Keaton, Katey Sagal (Married with Children). lol we are way OT but what else is there to do until Jessie and James arrive? ::::: Opera :::::

Wonderful. ......and any other superlatives that one cares to mention. I'm glad that one's cleared up. *********************************************************** Mix 'n match.......M3 with Jessi........James with V3........SP with James.......... So many possibilities. Looking forward to it.

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 6:40 PM

I STILL don't know.... does P6 show transparency properly in Preview mode? Or hair, for instance. Like DAZ Studio does? Or is it still the cloud of dots? Pity about the CL renders of the P6 figures. Really bad. They may have potential, but the renders are so lousy it worries me. No decent lighting, nothing. When I see something like this I always go - Okay, if this was good enough to publish, how good is the inside of the product? :] Fish

Robo2010 ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 6:42 PM · edited Fri, 11 March 2005 at 6:48 PM

"I doubt that. People are too invested in those characters.

Besides, DAZ is giving them away free now, along with D|S. Not surprisingly, a lot of newbies are D|S users. Not sure they'll ever switch to Poser. Unless they want dynamic cloth and hair."

Well, I feel V3 is exhausted. Even in the MP. I have purchased more than 15 V3 characters in the MP. I will still use V3, but doesn't mean I will keep on purchasing other V3 Characters. Unless something better than Hpyerreal texture. Need more cloths and hair.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:12 PM

The images of the kids that I saw were really small but I thought they looked really good as well. I thought they still kind of resembled the P5 kids, but not too much. I still haven't figured out how they were named yet...

no, Kate Winslet went down on the Titanic, so due to "sea fear" she was not available when they cast "Pearl Harbor". Kate Beckinsale instead. ...baby should be named "Earp" that's funny! Depending on if the ExitGas morph dial is set to 1 or -1, determines which way it "earps" ::::: Opera :::::

The text on CL site says: Poser's Face Room allows you to create lifelike results by mapping any face onto a 3D head... It does not state clearly that it works on the ne characters and the images ar the old ones for Poser 5 package. I too think that feature would be worthless if itdidn't work with the new figures... we will see. The Material Room has been updated, so there is hope for the Face Room too. I just hate to have to wait till the 21 march to find out...

Philywebrider ( ) posted Sun, 13 March 2005 at 3:55 AM

I'm concerned about the Face Room size limitation P5 had. Can P6 do a 3000 to 4000 image for commerical printing or hi-rez face textures?
