Hello, most likely none of you will remember me. I've been gone a long time. Anyhow about 3 years ago when i stopped doing art the last project i was working on was real scalemail armour for posette. a couple of weeks ago i decided to take a look at finnishing it up and for the most part it's nearly done ... (had some problems with the helm that may require remeshing and reposerizing.. everything else is modled, imported, conformed or smart proped, uv mapped, has templates made for it and is ready to go. My question is .. What's the best way to go about packing all this mess up for the internet for either free stuff or to be sold in the market place? (havn't decided what to do with it yet)

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Thu, 30 December 2004 at 9:55 PM

I suggest putting the files in a zip folder with runtime as the main folder and then files such as geometries, libraries, and textures with subfolders that contain your obj file, character file, and textures.

That file structure is required if you're going to put it in the MP.

Link is to a tutorial on how to package Poser files. Both the Marketplace and Free Stuff items are usually packed this way.

Scalemail... real scalemail? That rings a bell! Were you the one who had modeled the pieces and the ties?

i don't know if i'm the one you were thinking of or not ... towards the end i was spending a lot of time at another site.. but this is what i was working on.

OH, wow....how very cool! Bookmarking this thread to keep up with the progress.

svdl ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 10:52 AM

Looks cool! And good items for Posette are very scarce these days, everything that's new is for V3/S3/M3.... I don't know whether it will sell though, the Millenium figures are far more popular. But if you can include morphs to fit the armor to Eternal Posette/Aneta by 3Dream (the best Posette character I've ever come across, awesome texture map and the mesh looks MUCH better than default Posette), it might become quite popular. Anyway, I'd not buy it for Posette only, but I'd buy it for Aneta.

There's a few of us that still use posette.

sorry, don't have aneta. I don't have the Millenium figures .. and honestly i think vitoria 3 is a waste of resources unless you are rendering her nude .. theres no point in my mind in loading a super high-poly figure only to cover the whole thing in clothes or armour. (expecially really high polycount armour like this).. then again now that i have a 3gig processor instead of a 500 mhz it might not be so bad ... I kinda had a feeling it wouldn't sell well as no one from what i recall buys anything for posette always vic or steph... thought about maybe modling for mayadoll ... but i don't really like her face ... theres something odd about it that just doesn't seem right .. not sure what.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 11:44 AM

Have you thought about the Sixus1 figures at www.poserfreebies.com?

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 12:29 PM

How about Aiko 3? You can download the LE version for free at DAZ, until midnight tonight. (Possibly longer - search for the Aiko base.) She seems to be the flavor of the week right now, and she'd look really cute in that armor.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 12:34 PM

If you want to sell some thing and have a complete monopoly, the choice would be to provide support for Neftis' Elle figure available at polymage.com.

Mordikar ( ) posted Fri, 31 December 2004 at 12:37 PM · edited Fri, 31 December 2004 at 12:45 PM

hrm ... i've got Aiko. not real sure how to make the armour fit her though since it was modeled for posette ... may have to look into it though ... I already had plans to model an oriental robe for her (like the one i biught my wife for christmas) ... maybe i can add some armout to my list ..

You might want to go ahead wiyh the Posette version as well. A marketplace search for "Posette" yielded 4 pages of results, so there are still a few potential sales...

That armor is incredible! I think this much work really needs to see the light of day.

Complete and release for posette asap, then expand & add compatibilities/accessories/morphs/textures etc as you feel inclined to, would be my humble advice. :)

As for packing it, I would do the following:

Create a new folder on your desktop called:

Runtime

Open this folder and create 3 subfolders inside it named:

Geometries
Textures
Libraries

Open Geometries and Textures, and create a 1 subfolder in each named:

Mordikar

Open Libraries, create 1 subfolder named:

character

then in character, create 1 subfolder named:

Mordikar

make sure your .cr2's in the Libraries>character>Mordikar subfolder point to .obj and .jpg as follows:

figureResFile :Runtime:Geometries:Mordikar:name_of_your_armor.obj

reflectionMap ":Runtime:textures:Mordikar:name_of_your_reflection.jpg"

etc.

When all that is done, go to your Desktop and create a quick Readme.txt and place that next to the Runtime folder. Then rightclick and lasso the Runtime folder and Readme.txt, realease the right mouse button and select the Winzip option "Add to Zip file..." This will allow you to overwrite any default name and apply any filename you want, then create a zip on the Desktop.

There is undoubtedly other ways to do this, but this seems to be reasonably standard from the installions ive seen. Is this what you needed to know? Sorry if I gave you info you already have. Once youve got the items zipped up in this fashion, your ready to send to beta testers. Id love to help as one! If you need such help or any other advice about zipping or preparing the folders please ask.

Logan

I'd buy it for Posette. It has style and flair and originality. I also think with the right textures that it would work for mermaids and birdwomen and elves. :) Doesn't V2P4 wear Posette clothing? If so, the people who want Vicki's textures and face could use this armor as well. Carolly

Has the packaging process begun on this yet? Im really eagerly awaiting its release :)

SMILEYDEE ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 3:01 AM

Hello, I was wondering if this wonderful armor would be out for the public anytime soon? It would be a shame to pass it up because it couldn't be zipped :( I'm willing to lend a helping and in zipping it if it would help :)))

lmckenzie ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:59 AM

There's also a hybrid of Posette's body with Vicky 3's head so that's another option for using this. It would also look great on Maya Doll. I didn't care for her face at first either but PoserGirls (?) has done some really nice morphs for her. How big is the srmor-file sizes?

On a good note .... once i do release it it's gonna have to go to free stuff. if i don't have the time to package it i'm pretty sure i'm not gonna have the time to support it properly as a sale item.

Hey we got Mordikar here :)

My condolances on the job situation. Ive run into some real yahoos masqurading as business owners and Ive found that all too often the last thing that determines if youre employed or not is your own loyalty, skill, and talents :(

It was very courteous of you to respond to the thread with all youve got going on in Real Life. As you can see, youve got quite a following of fans that includes I dont know how many forum lurkers :)

With the community weve got here, your item WILL get support. If you gift us with your beautiful armor, we will watch the Forums dilligently and help all newcomers utilize your freebie - thats a promise :)

So ya cant bend her too much? I havent seen a conformer that cant be extreme-posed outta whack anyhow. My two responses to the hip bend situation are:

  1. Posette has a cute butt

  2. Postwork is readilly available for those that dont think Posette has a cute butt

That said we are all here to help you help us!! Need a hand packaging, need any .cr2's test edited, need ReadMe help, need beta renders, need ANYTHING, we are all just an email or IM away.

Lets get this awesome armor released to the unwashed masses Mordikar!!! :)

Mordikar: Sorry to hear about the job! Good luck finding a new one. If you want some space to host the package, just send me an IM and I'll set up an FTP account for you on my home server. Unlimited traffic, medium speed (512 Kbit upstream), no charges whatsoever and I've got oodles of space. And if you want I'll do the packing up for you. I could even add some nice extras, like ERC morphs - you'd probably want a Superhero morph on the armor. And maybe JCM to handle that little butt problem you mentioned.

ok stupid question that has caused a road block...

Do i need the rsr files from the gemoetry folder? or just the obj's?

I know i need the rsr's in the cr2 folder .. but i'm not sure if i nede the ones in the geom folder or not.
It's been almost a year since i did anything in poser and i'm forgetful :) ps svdl does RULE

Mordikar: As far as I know, you don't need the .rsr files in the geometry folder - Poser will create them itself when the item is accessed for the first time. The .rsr files in the cr2 folders are needed for Poser 4. Poser Pro Pack and Poser 5 don't need .rsr files at all, they only use them for the thumbnail image in the library and they can alsu use a .png for that. Poser 5 creates .pngs when it encounters a .cr2 without one (either from the .rsr, or from scratch - the grey shrugging guy). I'm not sure whether PP creates .pngs. I only have Poser 5, I've read a bit in the Poser Technical forum about the way P4 and PP handle .rsrs, but I don't remember exactly. The best way to package is including both .rsr and .png files in the cr2 folder. Creating those .pngs is no problem for me, I just have to install the scale mail into my Poser 5 runtime and access the library. Hope this helps, Steven. P.S.: Does the FTP account work? The account settings are in your IMs

logansfury ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 2:18 PM

Regarding the .rsr file in the Character and if applicable, Props directory: Yes PPP needs the .rsr to build the thumbnails. If you dont provide a premade .png thumb or an .rsr, then PPP will generate the shruggy-guy. Logan

Mordikar ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 2:21 PM

ftp account works. gonna get rid of the rsr's from the Geoms folder and she'll be ready to pack and send.

May we have a link please :) Im assuming we should all keep our eyes peeled for addon morphs or an update from Steven with the JCM? Also are you comfortable with the idea of me screaming from the rooftops to summon some texture artists this way and trying to expand the possibilities of your product? Thanks to YOU Mordikar, for sharing your incredible modelling talent and artistic vision, and most importantly, for withstanding so courteously my merciless harrassment over the last 3 months to get this armor packaged :) With respect, Logan

Mordikar ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:24 PM

ROFL ok well right now i'm re-uploading it as when i tried to upload the corrected readme i seem to have corrupted the file.. It will be in the downloads area here and at another site .. (not too sure on what the rules are for mentioning other sites and theres history between the two sites but i have friends there too) I have no qualms at all about texture artists texturing the modles.. i did my best to uvmap it to make it easy to texture and have included the texture templates for that very purpose. As far as i know svdl will be doing morphs for it .. though i'm not sure if he's going to re pack them in the original zip or release his own morph pack. the link to the file is: http://svdlinden.xs4all.nl/mordikar/Downloads/p4_Fem_Scale/P4_Fem_Scalemail.zip and no SMILEYDEE i didn't really think there was this much demand for it :) I think that covers all the questions :)

logansfury ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:41 PM

svdl ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:46 PM

I will do some morphs - first of all I'll do the Superhero FBM for Posette, then I'll see what I can do about her butt poking out in extreme poses, and I might do some breast morphs too (not sure, I don't think they're that much needed). I'll supply those morphs as a separate package (CR2 only). I'm also thinking about a sword or an axe as an addon, smartpropped to her hand. Same goes for a shield. But don't expect them too soon - I've got a very busy job and I've got some other projects in the works too (some dynamic clothes, and a posable Arabian dhow)

logansfury ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:57 PM

Steven that sounds VERY good :) Matched shields are so rare, I think thats a GREAT idea. May I please make one request? Could you do something about her bare feet? I think a flat, somehow scale-armored shoe only covering foot/ankle would be such an enhancement if youve time.

svdl ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:10 PM

I'll think about those shoes. They're not easy to make! The modeling is quite difficult, and the rigging of the bones can be a major pain in the butt. What kind of shield would be the best match? A simple round buckler, a Roman rectangular tower shield, a medium sized medieval shield? For the sword I'm thinking about a regular broadsword, not too large (say about 3 feet total length).

logansfury ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:25 PM

In my opinion, given that the scales have that long rounded tapered triangle shape, I think the shield would look good matching this. Note the long and thin shape of the pieces that drape over the thighs. I think a shield with a flat or barely convex top, narrow, then a long, rounded tapering triangle or spearhead shape shield. I say rounded referring to the taper to the bottom point, which I think should be very sharp and angular at the end, not rounded. I dont really see any boss or spike on such a shield, I think a smooth convex surface would best match the scale mail

What im really interested in seeing is where you go with that axe :) Will it be a horsemans weapon to use when mounted upon any number of different fantasy beasts rather than the footmans big double bitted Conan style? I kind of see something long handled with a halbardish head and just barely ornate, but all business, in my minds eye :)

Cant wait to see what you release as time allows!

logansfury ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:34 PM

file_163106.jpg

This is the kind of shape im talking about, only perhaps more narrow to make it light and wieldly, as in a slashing and stabbing weapon when employing the bottom point and the edges :)

Mordikar ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:39 PM

She doesn't have bare feet .. she has boots. good luck making boots to fit under thos shin guards :) I have a bunch of swrods, daggers, axes, ect i was working on long ago too .. even a morphing bow .. maybe i'll dust them off too...

svdl ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:42 PM

Yep, that was what I was thinking about. The armor looks somewhat medieval type, though the regular Roman armor was also classed as scale mail. So it might be a good idea to make two shields - a Roman type and this medieval type, both as tall shields. The axe - I was thinking about a rather light axe, without spikes, the blade very narrow at its base and wider at its edge, with a rather long, somewhat curved handle. I'm not too knowledgeable about battle axes, but I don't think a heavy double headed axe fits the style of the armor... A halberd would be pretty OK too, I think.
