Subject: Excellent, Great, Good, Nice, Interesting, ad nauseum...

pookah69 ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 3:14 PM · edited Wed, 08 January 2025 at 9:17 PM

So I noticed that I've finally gotten enough feedback on some of my gallery images to warrant a rating under the thumbnail: "Interesting." I like "Interesting." I'd rather be "interesting" than "excellent" which is one of the most hackneyed words in the English language. Big-breasted V3s with facial symmetry are "excellent"--I wear my rating of "interesting" like a badge of honor, though I notice that "interesting" falls below "nice" in the Renderosity hierarchy of ratings.

I always thought "interesting" is better than "nice" - oh well, I guess my English isn't as good as I hoped :D. Congrats on your "badge of honour" :)

You managed to interest me enough to look at this thread.......

I would recommend replacing the "excellent" rating with a "Swww-eee--eeee--tttt!!!!!!!" rating.

There should be several different ratings to indicate just what you mean by "excellent" Excellent B - Love those boobs; Excellent M - A Masterpiece of art; Excellent P - Excellent use of my marketplace product; Excellent CF - Excellent creditied use of my freebie; Excellent UF - Excellent uncreditied use of my freebie; Excellent R - Excellent rating to reciprocate for an excellent rating you gave me earlier; Excellent N - Ooohhh, nudity. I love nudity.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 4:51 PM

There's an odd mix here.

Some people can't handle criticism of any sort. Therefore, one should never consider making any negative comments.

On the other hand, select individuals are actually seeking criticism of their work. Therefore, one should leave in-depth constructive criticism.

However, certain critics aren't really attempting to offer helpful critques: they merely want to troll images. And sometimes the trolling is disgused under the banner of "constructive criticism". If the troll's negative intent is pointed out, then the troll can always declare innocence -- they were offering "helpful criticism" -- and their comment didn't actually mean what the tone indicated that it meant.

But ----- the term "troll" is frequently applied to anyone that says anything other than "THIS IS THE BEST THAT I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!"

Then again ----- anyone that says that "THIS IS THE BEST THAT I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!" is a suck-up, and therefore cannot be taken seriously.

My opinion? You can't win.

Perhaps it's best to not leave any comments at all.

personally I look for both good and bad, perhaps as a common practice we could indicate what kind of feedback we're looking for. BTW I second the multiple excellent rates as stated above. Can we get a vote on this ;)

pookah69 ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 5:23 PM

The answer--perhaps--is to find the kindred souls who can offer you what you need, and to whom you can give something of equal value in return.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 6:13 PM

I like criticism and I like to give it but it is hard to determine whether or not people want it unless you know them or keep a list of "people that want criticism" but most often I say nothing unless something really strkes my fancy and then I say "Cool" and that is about it.

queri ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 6:44 PM

Thank you for getting me interested in your gallery. Incredible stuff. Please keep it coming. By the way, I usually mark excellent or just slightly less, if I'm going to comment because most posters can't bear anything else-- and I leave my critique for the words. Thank you for giving me a chance to actually mean it this time. Emily

What I personally would like with comments on my gallery images is pointing out each and every mistake or shoddily done whatever... I love when someone says a few kind & enthusiastic words, I appreciate any criticism, however there rarely seems to be much criticism... I recently cleaned out my gallery cuz I thought all my pics needed work and could stand some serious improvement & I only really had constructive criticism on the very first pic I posted. I've been using Poser for a long time (since '99 - that was the last millenium darnit!!) but I'm no Poser guru or expert that my pics are all perfect and require no improvements! I (and a lot of other users I'd assume) post in the gallery to gather feedback on how I can improve my Poser experience... I'm very guilty of the big boobed V3 gallery submissions but there is more to a picture than just breasts big or otherwhise!! I can't believe I said that and meant it!!! LOL!!! My two cent's are spent for now... must go play Halo2!!!!! G

I don't like that there has to be a negative comment(s), because someone thought that there were too many positives. Commend, say what is good (excellent, cool, whatever) then give what is percieved to be a flaw. And please don't come off as if you are the last living expert on the topic/artwork at hand. It's that other persons art, not yours.(I'm thinking about George Lucas' illustration/comment on 60 minutes about the red/white house.) Seen too many excellent works, slammed by folks who either feel threatened by someone elses work, or who have such low esteem that they have to bring other folks down or just have to be the top dog standing. To test the waters here, I put up one Anime/Aiko & got some criticism and one Vicky which has got nothing so far, maybe I needed a boob shot instead of a headshot to get some comments? lol. Go figure. :)

What if Vickys boobs were on her head? That would be be "interesting" I think!! G

I've long agreed w/ the speculative nature of the rating system, such as "Intersting" bein' better than "Excellent". Therefore I propose the new system as follows; 'Kin-A!!! Bitchin'! Oooooohhhhh, pretty! I can dig it Not bad Huh? Where's the temple & sword? I don' get it... WTF??? Crap! Is total CRAP!!!

Goodie, new system - at last matching things I'd like to say to the creators :D. My favourites are "Where's the temple & sword?" and "Excellent B", but "Swww-eee--eeee--tttt!!!!!!!" beats them all :) pookah69, you made my day with your newest pic, I laughed so hard I almost couldn't breath :)

My big problem when trying to post a rating in the gallery is becomming too aware of the total gallery. I'm sitting here looking at something that's clumbsy, has obvious room for improvement, but shows the potential of the artist to learn. Then I look around at the other reviews, and they are all "Best yet!! Never change!!" And then I look around at other items in the galleries and find the same basic mistakes in lighting and poke-through and crunchy joints. And I'm left with the realization that the entire gallery needs a rating, a rating that says "getting better, but keep working at it." Problem is, the gallery as a whole, taken as if it were an individual, is one that is insufferably proud of its own accomplishments and does not want to be told it is still on a learning path. So how do I rate this image before me? I can't talk about it on a scale of what would be possible with that artist and that software. Much less would it be fair to talk about where it stands within the entire variety of visual art. But if I grade it on a curve, am I not supporting this illusion shared by the gallery? And am I not, in effect, telling the artist she is done, she is perfect, she should listen to the roar of the clique and stop trying to improve? Mostly I don't rate at all. That seems the most honest path.

gagnonrich ( ) posted Mon, 21 March 2005 at 12:09 PM

If I give somebody a rating, it's "excellent" if it's good because most images have so few ratings that anything less drags it down. It's always hard to criticize a work because two different people have different perspectives, so probably won't approach the same work the same way. Sometimes there are obvious things that should be fixed. Other times, a critique is little better than a personal preference. The problem with looking at an image and wanting to leave a critical comment is that some critics almost want to find something that isn't perfect about a work and leave their greater knowledge. Often, when I look at the critic's gallery, it's nothing to brag about and the work is often inferior to the one being critiqued. I prefer to leave positive comments because it takes a certain amount of courage to simply putting one's work on display. It's always better to encourage artists in their endeavors. If they're any good, they'll eventually find ways to improve on their own. The rare times that I can stroll through the galleries, I'd rather pat somebody on the back for doing good work than point out their flaws.

The link was posted in another thread, but looking at some of the comments is a good example of criticisms not needed. The image is stunningly realistic and the criticisms on how to improve the image are somewhat ridiculous. Some of the comments make me tempted to post a photo, do some photo manipulation of the image to create, or superimpose, a poly model, to fake a 3D mesh origin for the actual person, and watch the "3D masters" explain how to improve it and make it look more real.

This was the image I had in mind when I posted my comments. There is another modeling board and the comments there also blow my mind. IF there is something to say give the commendation first and then direct opinion/comment/SUGGESTION to the artist. I give the quick comment to an image that catches my attention or causes me to react. If I REALLY like the image, I'll tell you.

I look, I appreciate, I move on. I don't feel a need to post my "critique" to everything I view; especially if it's not to my tastes. Art is subjective. I know when I make something I make it to please my eye; I don't care if it pleases yours or not, unless you are buying something...then of course I care that you like it. But just for art itself, all that's important is that it pleases me. If others end up liking it in the end, that's only a bonus.

able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi
