Below my message to Curious Labs about a problem I experienced with Poser 6. Some people here had it crash when trying to save or so. Well on my machine it crashed right after the opening screens. A lot of trial and error pointed me to the "evil" poser blocker.

I have experienced a problem with Poser 6. After installation Poser crashed and shutdown right after the opening screens. After disabling all autostart programs the problem did not occur. So I enabled them one by one to see which program gives the problem. It appears that it is Norton Internet Security, specifically the executable "ccapp.exe". Just disabling the firewall or virusscannner is not enough. Also giving Poser.exe all permissions doesn't do the trick. As a workaround I now have deleted the registry key that starts this program because once its started you can't stop it from the taskmanager.

Lets hope they fix these kind of problems soon!!!!!!

hmm interesting you get similar behavour with Zonealarm Pro if you block the wrong thing.. got mine fixed, (unblocked java.exe, removed P6 from the ZA list, ran P6, readded P6 to the ZA List and everythings running fine), but I would like to know exactly what the prob was...

I've used Norton Stuff for 10 years, and recently uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2005 because it kept interferring with SpamKiller as I checked email. Norton was so dumb. Things would be ok for awhile, then Norton would go nuts. It kept asking what I wanted to do, and wouldn't listen to me.

Ouch! I have Norton Internet Security... :(

I too have Norton Internet Security and there is a 'known' issue with its Firewall and my Broadband connecton software - I have to disable it while on line (doh!!!!) or my PC blue screens/crashes. Seems like it's a little over zealous with several programs...

I just dumped Nortons too because it was conflicting with my video drivers of all things. I now have AVG antivirus and the windows firewall. All seems well now. I've heard a number of these sorts of stories with Nortons stuff over the years. They also regularly screw up their live update, I've had many problems happen after running a live update!

I jumped from Norton Systemworks & Personal Firewall 2003 up to Norton Systemworks Premier 2005, and Norton Internet Security 2005. Recently a friend and I bought PC-Cillan Internet Security Suite 2005, and like it better than Norton. It seems to "behave itself," yet still do the job.

best solution : remove Nortons. they have a track record in security of regularly screwing up, plus of actually not being very good. for free, you can get AVG Anti Virus (free regular updates) and Zonealarm, both of which do a far better job. (Norton was severly tested on my systems when I had a virus that kept coming back. norton kept missing it on the scans, even tho it was in it's database. AVG spotted and killed it right off. sorry, if a free program performs better out goes the paid for one. knowing this track record when it came to selecting a firewall I avoided nortons all together and have had only minor hiccups with ZA. infact I was able to fix the hiccup with ZA - which was my own fault - in minutes when running Poser 6)

I'm with you Khai, I've certainly had enough problems with Nortons, BUUUT NOT any more!!!

Actually I don't agree with a blanket negative review of Norton. Norton is the name of a series of products. Norton Systemworks has provided me great service and reliability for a decade. Norton Internet Security and Antivirus worked very well, and caught all sorts of viruses.

I'd heard bad things about Norton Internet Security 2004 and 2005. I recently got Norton Systemworks 2005 Premier, and it works just fine. I did, however find some problems with Norton Internet Security 2005, and decided to uninstall it in favor of PC-Cillan Internet Security Suite 2005.

constantine1234, it's not my intention to completely rubbish Norton [I know that's how it looks] but I've had Nortons for a number of years on more than one computer and twice they stuffed my computer for months after a "liveupdate" until they sent an update to fix the problem they'd created in the first place. The computer I'm using now has had so many different glitches going on since I put Nortons on it that in the end I just deleted it and installed AVG7 instead. Touch wood [pats head, lol] no more glitches so far. I guess we all have our reasons for having or not having it!!! Cheers!

I gave up on Norton Internet Security long, long ago. It had a whimsical tendency to disable itself randomly without any notice every couple of days. I'd check on status and it would ask me if I wanted to enable it. Sometimes wouldn't enable without multiple reboots, then quietly disable itself a few hours later. Considering Symantec bought out one of the best firewalls I've ever used as a core technology for their product (AtGuard, was it called?), and I'd lost the purchase/download for that when I cross-graded to the norton, I was thoroughly dis-gruntled at the mess.

Uh. Is it possible that there is a secret "phone home/scan" like was in Poser 4 pro (which searched your LAN for other computers running the same license of Poser), and norton is rightly blocking this activity? not that poser software shouldn't report back to HQ or scan your network or anything like that, heaven forbid I should be critical of anything like that, but isn't that possibly the cause of the problem?

NAV got canned after it caused data loss on my system. Allowed a virus infected email to be downloaded then deleted all the email when it finally detected it. NAV's answer was that it was a know bug and I SHOULD TURN EMAIL SCANNING OFF ... Been running AVG for 2 year without a glitch. Everything, poser included, runs faster with AVG.

thefixer: you say "Norton's" caused troubles on your computer? Was it Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks? When you say "Norton's" it's just like people who say "DAZ caused problems on my computer." Did DAZ 3D personally come and mess with your computer, or was it DAZ|Studio?! Do you get what I'm saying? Yes, I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2005. But I kept Norton SystemWorks 2005.

Initially it was Nortons personal firewall. I dumped that and it seemed ok for a couple of days and then I did a live update on the antivirus [2004] and it screwed the internal clock backwards by 5 years [I kid you not]. This also had obvious effects on other things, programmes etc. I had to uninstall to get my clock back to 2005 and then I installed AVG and so far so good!! From the thread so far it looks like I'm not the only one either. No disrespect intended to yourself constantine1234, if you've had good performance from them then that's great!

here, I've had Nortons (tools/AV/Systemworks) over the years from version 1 to 2003. and watched the quality of each release from Norton Tools 7 drop to what I consider unusable.. the last version of the current tools / AV / Systemworks I used made the machine unstable, slow and well... as I said above, it missed a virus that was in it's own database! while Norton's did'nt come to my house and mess my computer up, the software they did supply me did not live up to expectations.. so out it went, back to the shop for a refund.

You missed my point. When someone says the word "Norton," it is the name of a company. There are many Norton Products. It's important to know which product you're talking about. I'm currently using Norton SystemWorks, but I'm not using Norton Antivirus or Norton Internet Security. To take the name confusion into the graphics world: Many people now say they have problems with "DAZ." DAZ is a company that makes many products, including DAZ|Studio. Now is someone having problems with DAZ, the company, or DAZ|Studio, the program?

erm no... I got your point. you missed mine. I've had problems with ALL the products of that company. I won't touch anything they've published since Norton Tools Seven now.

(Groan) I suspected as much. Up until fairly recently I wasn't having any display problems with my GeForce MX 440 card. Now, all of a sudden, when accessing certain web sites my Poser 6 display goes all wonky. The only thing different between now and then is that I've just installed Norton System Works and Norton Internet Security. I switched back to Norton's because a while back Trend Micro sent out a virus update that made me think I had a virus (the resource meter was pinned to 97% with no way out of it). So when I reformatted my hard drive I switched back to NIS. (Sigh) ... NOW what do I do? Display problems aren't isolated to Poser 6, as I see them on occasion with Deep Paint 3D and Shade as well. Perhaps it's an Open GL thing, because when I switch to the Sree3D drivers in Poser all seems fine.

Well, I blew Norton Internet Security and System Works off my computer and asked for a refund. I won't be buying either product any more. Shame ... they used to be so good.
