vangogh. Rayraz, attileus, Erlik, I assume you are all programmers yourselves? And you all know what it would take to speed up the Bryce renderer? Then you should all contact DAZ and tell them what they need to do. "many people think that it would have been easier to write a programme that looks like Bryce and imports Bryce stuff but with a totally new graphic engine..." If someone could do that in 9 months, (that's how long DAZ has had Bryce) I'm sure it would have been done. Coldrake
Coldrake....ease up some...we're just having a little fun. When Daz releases Bryce 5.5 I will be right there with my hand out for a copy as I am a diehard Bryce fan and have been since I started using it many years ago. But just like little kids with the promise of a new toy, we are all on the edge of our seats and find it hard to wait.
Coldrake, I'm not a programmer as such, but I am the assistant editor-in-chief of a computer magazine, so I know at least a little bit of what I'm talking about. If you have a heap of code which does something, but you have parts for which you don't know what they are exactly doing or whether they are doing anything*, it is easier to start everything from scratch than try to understand the relations of the existing pieces of code. Nobody said it was faster. But if you know what you're doing, you'll get a cleaner and possibly better documented program. And I repeat: nobody said it would be faster. So, please... * If you remember that thread where Doc Mojo said there were pieces of code inside Bryce that could produce much better looking clouds... That code was never activated. Otherwise we wouldn't have just the flat looking cloud plane and volumetric materials.

Aye, Erlik, I remember that thread. Coldrake is merely playing the role of DAZ benefit-of-the-doubter... I personally don't care one bit about Bryce 5.5. Rendering speed means nothing to me, it's all about functionality. I foresee DAZ doing Bryce the same justice Corel did, at best. All the hype is just hype, it's a stupid idea to make 5.5 in the first place. I seriously doubt that DAZ will ever ship Bryce 6, so far DAZ hasn't proven anything to me except that they are inept. Also, Codrake, consider this : Every other ridiculously immense program (Maya, Lightwave, Cinema) has no problem cranking out new products on time. 9 months is FAR too long of a development time for a .5 upgrade. They should have been done long ago. Far mre advanced products are cranked out all the time, and much faster. Hell, right after I got Maya 6 the Maya 6.5 upgrade was released! I'm not in the least bit pleased with DAZ or the future of our Bryce program. I'll stick with my 5.01, it does it's job just fine.
Coldrake, they teach me how to program render engines and I'll program them one that's faster then bryce's engine. I programmed a 3d engine before on a pocket calculator, how's that for having to make efficient code?

Naysayers... Pah! Coldrake, please take no offense, we're all just a bunch of 3D geeks, just like you. That said, I can understand your loyalty to DAZ, they have put out many great models over the years, and DAZ studio is a promising app to say the least, although I don't think it's quite as powerful as Poser is yet... (yet) THAT said, having started on a long-term Mayan adventure, I can't say I'll be using Poser for much longer. There are exactly zero things that Poser can do that Maya can't do, and exactly a billion things that Maya can do that Poser cannot. The same holds true for Bryce itself. To sum it up, without any more egotism than my screen-name, I don't care what DAZ does with Bryce's rendering engine, it's still never gonna touch mental ray (one of the renderers I use with Maya), ever. I'll keep my Bryce 5 around and use it daily for artistic purposes, but as my workflow and knowledge increases in Maya I daresay I'll eventually do all of my 3D rendering in Maya... (is going the way of Doublecrash, alas...)
IMHO you cant compare Maya with Bryce, no offense to all brycers out here after all Im one my self, but Maya is a real working tool, with almost no limitations, bryce is a toy.. thats fact.. but a heck of a fun toy. Im trying to learn Maya my self and as soon as I become a litle more secure with it I will use it to everything. Its like riding a bike, you start of with those three wheeled litle suckers and thats fun, but somewhere on the way you get your self a mountainbike, (and end up with a HD) So DAZ can make what ever they want to. Bryce just isnt a program to get stuck with if you want to be able to some realy heavy renderings.

Has anyone else had the latest newsletter from DAZ? Apparently the new faster renderer has been found to render some scenes, well, slower. So 5.5 is going to be little bit more.. um.. delayed. But don't despair - the good news is that THE BOX COVER DESIGN HAS BEEN FINALISED!
