Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 01 12:52 pm)
There's a thread about 2 pages back - Bioluminescence. Check it out, it's about this very subject.

Here's a link to the thread Sam was referring to (for the lazy)...;-)

Will that work in poser 5? I got a nifty looking wand with one of the sale items at poser pros and it would be cool to get the glow done in Poser 5, instead of taking it to PSP and doing it there. I'd like to use Poser for more than dress up dolly if I can.

No, it won't work but - as was suggested in the linked thread - you could try pointing a soft spotlight at the area you want to be illuminated. OTOH, maybe it's worth playing around with the Probe Light Node. Ain't tried it meself, so I can't say.

The gather node does not add the Glow affect that appears around something like a neon tube, or light sabre but makes the wall or floor or other object around the Neon tube act like the tube is giving of light, Is there a way to get the Gather node to create the "Haze" effect around neon tubes to create that glow effect?
Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

I personally don't know of any software which is capable of that as a standard feature. In 3dsMax, for instance, "glow" can be added as a post-filter lens effect (which means it's an effect that's added AFTER the actual render). Other programs require you to use 3rd party addons (which still do it as a post effect) or you're required to add the effect in a video editor like AfterEffects or image editor like Photoshop. Even true Radiosity (which is what the gather node simulates) doesn't give you the kind of object glow you're looking for there... it's always added as a 2D camera lens effect or simply done in post (just like "specular bloom"). If you can actually find an app that does it as a material effect AT rendertime, then I'd be very very surprised.

As a side-note, you could fake that "aura" glow you want by using transparency/ambience on a duplicate object scaled up just enough to envelope the original object. That is, if you MUST have it at rendertime.

"Funny thing is that RaydreamStudio had it 10 years ago. It was a render filter applied after the image was rendered." RayDream was always a step ahead of the game! Again, it's always applied as a render filter or camera effect. Even in the most high end apps. As was pointed out, it could be "faked" with different methods to varying degrees of success. I loved RayDream Studio. I learned how to model with it 5 or 6 years ago before moving on to 3dsMax. To this day, it still remains one of my all-time favorite applications. :-)

Considering the new possibilities which came with Poser 6, I thought maybe it's finally possible to reach a more realistic glow effect inside Poser (less for some Lightsaber's more for simple things like demonic glowing eyes or the glow of Sci-Fi Buttons / Flashlights etc.) so, if you can and will help me with this, you're more than welcome! ;)
