Subject: Kudos to the Renderosity Mods

shinyary2 ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 3:49 PM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 8:53 AM

Recently there seem to have been a great deal of complaining about various decisions made by both the Renderosity moderators and Renderosity in general. I think that they are doing an excellent if rather difficult job. I am an active, though rather new, member of the Bryce forum; both Agent Smith and Zhann are extremely active in their moderating. In particular Agent Smith. If you glance at the threads in the Bryce forum, you will see that AS has a post in nearly all of them, and upon closer examination you will see that all of his posts are intelligent and useful. The same goes for BazC on the somewhat smaller Wings forum. Also from what I have seen StaceyG and sndcastie are doing excellent jobs here as well. It is difficult, and you cannot please everyone; the choices you make are tough ones, and that you stick by them shows a great deal of fortitude in my opinion. I do not mean to reopen old wounds, restart old debates, or "kick the dead horse" as the expression seems to be here. I simply believe that these people deserve some recognition for the time that they devote to making Renderosity a better place for all of us. You are to be commended! =)

Thank you so much for the Kudos. We do try hard, sometimes its more difficult than other times:) We have a wonderful Mod/Coord team and I am very proud of all of them. Sandy is a wonderful admin to have on my team as well. Thank you again for the appreciation. Stacey Community Manager

Thank you so much for your kind words. We owe it to our great members for helping make this site what it is today and what it will become in the future. We have had to make some tough decisions but it will be worth it in the end. Stacey,me and our team are devoted to make this site the best it can be. We feel we have one of the best teams ever and without their hard work we would be nothing. :O)

That was very nice...and yes they do a very hard but great job of it. Your words will echo loud in the admin forums.

"kick the dead horse" as the expression seems to be here

"Beating a dead horse" is the usual phrase. It shares forum time with "pass the popcorn" and more recently "hamsters" (at least around here).

I suppose that the process of beating a dead horse could involve kicking.

The problem with kicking a dead horse is that the horse might turn out to be alive. In which case the animal might kick back. And horses can kick pretty hard.

Yes, the mods & admins here do an excellent job.

Especially considering the things that they commonly have to deal with.

The administration deserves more thanks than they get -- fielding a frequently thankless job.

As someone who has a bit of experience at the Admin/Moderator level of these sites.I can tell you that the job of running a large site is more difficult than many could ever imagine. It is near impossible to please everyone and a good day is when there are only 10 fires instead of 20 to put out. They do take on the task eyes wide open and the positions are not for the thin skinned. My hat is off to anyone who puts forth the effort. It's a delicate balance of trying to please the members, the merchants, the owners and the sponsors. The pressure comes from all sides at once sometimes. I didn't particularly endorse all of the decisions made over at the 3DCommune,but I had to stand by and enforce them anyway. Please remember that just because a staff member is enforcing a rule, they don't always agree with i,.they are just doing their job. To those who relentlessly slam the staff, all I can say is try doing their job for a while. It's stressful, time consuming, and thankless much of the time, and just having your name at the top of a forum is like wearing an open season target on your forehead. Tom

Yup, horses kick pretty hard. I've never been kicked, but I've known a few people who have (my sister has a rather permanent dent in her right thigh because of this--no joke!). Tom: I can't even begin to imagine. Are there any spots open? Lol! =)

"Are there any spots open? Lol!" Beats the heck out of me...I'm no longer on staff anywhere. 8 ) Tom

Tom, You aren't? Then let me formally welcome you to the Ex-Evil-Overlord Club. We get skybox seating and real butter on the popcorn and time for the battlescars to heal. And we have the advantage of perspective since we know how much work is involved behind the scenes. It isn't totally thankless, though... there were times when people were glad that I stepped in, and knowing that I'd helped made it worthwhile. I will say that separating pit-bulls would be easier than disfusing some of the arguments here. You can shoot pit-bulls. Artists need to have things explained to them, and finding the right words to cut through the fog of emotion is tricky. Enforcing a rule while being courteous is a balancing act... and some of the staffers here are very good at it. Karen and MorriganShadow and Sandy (to point out a few) have a natural grace with their writing. Carolly

...and good old AS just blunders in there and he's so darn helpful and encouraging that nobody cares!! =) No offense AS just some lighthearted teasing. =)

Must be rough sometimes having to know what to do especially when you get some pretty nasty weirdo threads or folks that won't let up like those last two that just got locked here recently. Decisions are crucial and time sensitive I'm sure and it must be difficult and hard to be able to keep the site and members best interests at heart when making those decisions you have no choice but to make many a times. I'm sure being here is sometimes quite stressful especially when you've had a bad day yourself and darn, there's another problem to tend with, must be particularily stressful on full moons because I hear that's when the gravity pull affects internet forum users in the most absurd ways..;) Most important it must be difficult at times to know when to nourish a sense of humor and when not to and where to draw the line at other times in many different areas, and even how to percieve various postings, whether they are meant to offend, troll, or be personal, or perhaps there is a just a simple language barrier. So much to consider does make it anything but a holiday happening here for you folks most times I'm sure. Good days to you..

Carolly said: "You aren't? Then let me formally welcome you to the Ex-Evil-Overlord Club." Thank you The skybox is a nice change from being down on the field. Actually I've been out of the loop for several months now. I know it's not always thankless which is why I said "Much of the time" I had a great time on staff here and then at 3DC.I learned a lot and wouldn't trade the experience for anything I got to go to places like SIGGRAPH and rub elbows with those whom I respected as artists and developers over the years.(Special thanks to Jackie and Mark for that) I got to do a few reviews, run some contest, and always got the inside scoop in the industry long before the general public did...lol I think what goes unaddressed allot is the fact that,as these sites grow,..so does the allegiances to the various content and software developers. One of my jobs at the 3DC was contest coordinator. Believe me,..when a software company is forking over thousands of dollars in prizes, you want that promotion to go smoothly.Organizing and coordinating contests is more difficult than one might think. I remember I did the stupidest thing one time and held "7" (SEVEN) contests in one month. I swore I would never do that again...lol I say that to say this... Next time you think the site is catering to the software companies, remember that it is an essential part of keeping these sites going. There is lots of promotion going on in the background.Sure,...it isn't like it was way back when.I was here before it was even Renderosity and even before there were stores. Gasp But the sites have grown by leaps and bounds over the years and with that, comes then need for more and more people to run it and more and more sponsors to support it. It's not unlike a juggler that keeps being thrown more balls to juggle. All those new things are great, but they become increasingly difficult to manage. And there is more to go wrong. I take comfort and pride in the knowledge that I participated in something that became bigger than anyone could have imagined way back when. It wasn't all bad.,and I hope my earlier post didn't come across that way.In fact like I said,it was a very good experience for me.. Tom

Thanx for the very considerate and kind comments, and as an aside to anyone who may not realize it...Coords and Mods are all volunteer positions, done by folks who, for the most part have in fact a real life and job, which theyjuggle with their responsibilities, often working far too late on this 'gratis' position. Thanx again to all the kind members who actually appreciaye what it is the Coord/Mods do.... peace bobbystahr

danob: Your link doesn't work for me. Maybe just my interent connection on the fritz again? bobbystahr: Indeed, this is why I started this thread in the first place. I hope that the mods/coords don't think that we don't appreciate them. I think that even people who complain about them still do appreciate (just not right then lol). You guys deserve appreciation. A toast! =)
