Hello all,

The P6 SR1 updater is available now at http://www.e-frontier.com/filemanager/list/updates/130/132/134/?sbss=300.

Sorry for the inconvinience of the link being live earlier and I would suggest that if you downloaded already, you may want to download again. There was an installer that was a placeholder and a standin for testing so I can't guarantee the integrity of what you downloaded.

If you applied a standin, the following file will be already up to date: RuntimeheadsJessiHighResJessiHiRes_morphs.ph5 So that means the final installer will not be able to update this file again and will notify you of that. You can safely ignore this warning.

Also this is the windows installer only. The Macintosh release will be out soon. We need additional testing time for Mac OS X Tiger.
Thanks again,
EFSteve

Just downloaded it Steve. Thanks and I hope we don't need an SR-2 or SR-3, etc. :o)

Yep, I had to re-register as well; weird. At least it let me do it. Now to go see if I can render all those PZ3's I've been creating that wouldn't render before....

amberlover13 ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 8:25 PM

Very cool. Worked like a charm, thanks.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 8:35 PM

Please convey my thanks to the bugfix team for adding that Normals_Forward option to the Material Room root nodes; it really does seem to help with double-sided polys. Perhaps I won't have to use the displacement trick any longer.

I can live with the fact that my Figure Circle and Transparency Display settings still aren't retained between sessions, but if they could just fix that reflection culling bug so I don't have to leave smoothing enabled all the time ....

Same here. I had to re-register before I could download it. Not sure what's up with that but I thought once you registered, you wouldn't have to do it everytime you had to download and update.

othgood ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 9:32 PM

So what's the time frame for the Mac OS X 10.4 release? It would be fun to actually use Poser, seeing as how I paid for it and everything...

Ben_Dover ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 9:33 PM

Also had to register again. I know this was a necessary update and it appears a load of things were fixed or polished up a bit. One thing I'd like to see though, that little handle on the library.... I want it to stay attached to the library so I can open and close it properly. While they're at it, size that dang parameters window to match the open library in width (and heighth would be nice too), add a handle to it (a little higher or lower than the library handle) and make it dockable on the same side. Then it could almost be like a tabbed interface from the side to swap between the two. I don't like it just floating out in the way all the time. Oh, I'd like to be able to minimize it too. Thanks in advance. ;)

cherokee69 ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 10:17 PM

Anyone know a person named krazik? He just IM'd me asking for my serial number so he could see, as he said, why I had to re-register. He then signed it as..... -Rylan e frontier Needless to say, I didn't give him the serial number. Anyone else get an IM like that?

krazik ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 10:26 PM · edited Wed, 25 May 2005 at 10:27 PM

yes thats me. Notice I also gave you my e-frontier email address? ;) You'll see my name everytime you start the app too :)

Someone who had to register 2x please send me your serial so I can find out why.

hmmm....it would be nice to have the mac version now, but I would prefer it works...and I guess I kinda suspected it was too good to be true that it would be ready now....I just hope in their fixing it for the people who are on 10.4 Tiger, they don't break it for those of us who have chosen to stay on 10.3.9 for now :( ....I dont' know how all this works, I have to admit that, but these two OS versiones don't seem all that compatible lately :::is very nervous:::

shedofjoy ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 10:47 PM

yay... Downloaded, installed and tested, Added 1 V3 with Hyperreal textures, with 6lights 1 of which was a point light and some armour clothing for V3, (also some hair) and set it to maximum rendering 800x800, And then i watched my system groan under the load, my 1gb of ram prooved to little so it moved onto to Virtual ram then i got a "running out of minimum setting virtual memory, using extra virtual memory" Warning from windows, so after a little check my poser was using up a total of 3gb's of memory (had to increase my Virtual page file to 4096mbs, which is the maximum)... but still after 1hour there was no movement of the render bar... (when i get more time im gonna let this run) SO what do i have to add... FINALLY the memory bug is no more.. HORAH everyone go get the P6 update (ohh and dont run the update from the .Zip folder, as it wont update P6, you have to move it out of the .Zip folder people....(well i had to try)...lol Thanks CL-Steve for keeping us updated. Now where the hell am i going to get the money for a supercomputer???????

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

mamba-negra ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 11:19 PM

Yep. I had a mike figure whose hair always caused a really long delay (that fragmented materials problem.) It is still taking a long time to render, due to the large number of transparent planes, but the infinite time to "add objects" is no more (at least for this one hair)....gotta check to see if it fixed those others as well! woohoo!

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 11:29 PM

Thank you very much to e-frontier for this release. It is greatly appreciated.

Now --

-- to go fire up P6, and to attempt to render some scenes that I couldn't render before.......

Bend_Over, the library handle went behind the other windows in P5 too, they couldn't fix it then. But in P5 beta SR2.1 Larry W brought out the 'click anywhere outside of the library palette' feature, which had the effect of closing the library - without having to find that recalcetrant handle.

But that seems to have been broken in P6 - perhaps they could at least fix that ... if they haven't already. I've been off-'Net for a week due to a move, so not had chance to get P6 SR1 yet. Edited to fix stupid typo

I checked my P6 with Sr1 update and its great my images are better than with P5. P6 seems to handle complicated scenes than before. I will keep checking it. So far I am glad with the current results. Thank you to e-frontiers/CL

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 2:15 AM

Quick report --

I've been able to successfully render a scene which is loaded with raytraced reflections -- three mil figures + clothing + hair -- lotsa background props.

It worked. For the first time without crashing. Pre-SR1, this scene crashed in P6 on a render every time.

So based upon a few hours of experience, it looks like this one is a go........the memory bug might finally be squished.

I'll try some more with it over the next couple of days.

Thanks, EF. You've probably done it clear this time.

If so, then Poser 6 will leave all earlier versions of Poser choking on dust.

But that seems to have been broken in P6 - perhaps they could at least fix that ... if they haven't already.

We now close the library by clicking a little button ("X" marks the spot) in the upper-right-hand corner of the library panel.

The library shortcut (SHIFT-CTRL-B) works, also.

SR1 is a step forward, but we definitly will need a SR2. The list of bug fixes and improvements for SR1 is impressive, but there are still enough things to do. I even found new bugs in just a few hours.

The most serious problems for me are at the moment:

  1. Binary morphs for props are now stored for library files, but then they are missing in scene files. (Only the line with morphBinaryFile is missing in the scene, but without it doesn't work.)
  2. The topmost and leftmost pixels are rendered wrong. Before SR1, they were missing completely, now only most of them are missing. Again, not really an improvement.
  3. PNG and TIF-images with 256 colors or less no longer work as textures. TIFs are just black, PNGs have different colors and size. I had no problem with this before SR1.

DIMENSION_X ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 6:18 AM

Efrontiers/CL technical support did inform me that the current SR1 would resolve immediate problems faced by users.

Their will be subsequent updates to resolve a number inculding newier issues that have arisen.

However I suspect that Efrontier/CL will have to totally create a entire new version for the next generation of Poser by creating a new Poser engine that faciliates the current and future technologies.

Not as before amending the orginal Poser engine frame work from P3 to P6.

Snake Food 2 is now loose in my house thanks to my 12 year old who did not put the lid back on the cage right. The perfect pz3 for testing: reflections, refractions, displacement maps and a nude faerie (yes, kawecki, they still havent installed the ANTI-FAE CONTROL :D ). Yesterday I tried to render the same file and I needed to disable texture filtering and set the max texture size to half one. So ... ... all the setting to maximum quality, crossing fingers and RENDER NOW ... ... the shadow maps and other elements loads faster than before !!! and ... uli_k ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 12:03 PM

Hi all, here's a word regarding the "Out of Memory" message. Let me point out a few things (partially quoted from a statement I made in this forum earlier on): There isn't or wasn't "the" memory bug. There were some problems in Poser 6 before SR1 that made an out of memory message occur even when it shouldn't have. These problems should be fixed now. I'd dare to say that the render engine is fairly solid in SR1. There are also a number of improvements to texture handling and FireFly itself that will enable you to render larger scenes or scenes with more challenging settings. But there certainly is a limit to what is possible. Once you're getting closer to a million polygons or 30 hires textures, you will have to lower the render settings a notch (btw, the FireFly rendering tutorial in the Poser 6 Tutorial manual PDF explains how this often doesn't even affect your final result). The settings labeled as final are very aggressive in terms of resource needs. It is possible that at such render settings, a complex scene consumes more memory than an application can use on a 32 bit Windows system (2 gigabytes). That's why there is a memory check during rendering and that's why there is a message that suggests lowering those settings. This is all normal operation of the application. Please also consult the above mentioned FireFly rendering tutorial for details on this matter. Please render responsibly :-) If you experience that lowering the render settings doesn't help, if your scene is not complex (100,000 polygons or less, no 4k by 4k textures, no texture filtering), then that is not normal and considered a bug. In such a case, please contact e frontier tech support through http://www.e-frontier.com/go/emailtech I if you haven't done so yet. Setting virtual memory to system managed might help in some cases. The more adventurous users can also play with the newly introduced render memory preferences - tweaking the adaption threshold can make FireFly use more or less virtual memory before it reduces the size of a render bucket. Or you can switch off the automatic adaption of the bucket size. If you know the perfect size for your current render, it might render a bit faster because the adaption takes some time when it occurs. Setting the memory limit buffer closer to 0 MB takes FireFly's safety buffer away, squeezing out some extra memory (be careful with the latter two settings, those can affect stability). Hope this helps, Uli

;)

Hmmmmmmm. I follow what you are saying here.....

But in practical terms: the effect was still the same. Regardless of the precise nature of the root cause.

I'll still fondly remember it as "the memory bug".

In any case, SR1 looks to have fixed many things.

Thanks. It looks like ya done good. Real good.

I dunno guys.....

I understand the problem here with requesting serials via IM --

But I also think that krazik is 100% legit.

Personally, I am EXTREMELY gratified to see CL (ef) personnel participating directly in this forum. Answering questions, providing information to us, etc..

I wouldn't be too hard on krazik.

Perhaps he needs to exercise a little more diplomacy in dealing with the public........but he seems to be genuinely trying to directly help out at the same time.

IMO -- I'd rather not scare EF personnel back into semi-permanent lurker mode. The greater their participation around here, the better.

I understand being offended by what looks like an overly brusqe approach. Believe me, I understand.

But it would be helpful to not take it too hard --- point the issue out, sure -- but don't make a federal case out of it.

IMHO.

xenophonz, I think krazik is probably 100% legit too. No scammer would be so persistent. But that's not the point. I don't know for a fact that he is who he says he is. And if he works for CL, why the hell doesn't he mail us from work instead of using IMs? But the main reason is I don't like his attitude. He waltzs into this thread and assumes we know who he is, then starts IM-ing pople for a serial number. WTF is that about? And pointing to other threads isn't any sort of validation at all. If CL-steve or katherine IM-ed me, I'd know who they are. Who the f**k is this guy? And what's his status at CL? Is he here to conduct customer service on behalf of CL? He says he's not. So why doesn't he just leave it to the people who should be doing it. Or even better, why doesn't he tell CL-steve that people are having problems and point him to this thread? 'I could check Tori's email. But I'm not gonna' That doesn't exactly add to his credibility as a CL employee, does it? But whatever, I'm sure he works for them in some capacity. But I'll tell you this. I'm not anyone particularly important, but I do make poser content as a full-time occupation. I'm not some newbie who just wandered in. I've been around this place for a long time, and I've seen posts by everyone from larry weinberg down. And this sort of behaviour from a CL employee doesn't impress me in the least. mac PS Sorry. I'm not sounding off at you.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 5:15 PM

I know, mac -- I understand. You have some quite valid points.

But at the same time -- I don't want to make the EF people go away again. And I really don't believe that krazik intended any harm. He just got a little snippy, is all.

"Snippy" is actually pretty mild around these parts.

I would urge not letting this one blow up.

Krazik might be able to help us out.

But if some of us formites gang up on him and slap him around enough......we might just be killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

MAC, this message is for you:

you said at the end of your diatribe:
PS Sorry. I'm not sounding off at you.

Wow, if that's not sounding off about him, what do you call it? And if you weren't, then what is the "sorry" for?

If you'd just empathize and imagine for a second that maybe he was being totally honest and truly only wanted to help, then from his point of view I don't see anything wrong with his posts at all. However a few wise people rightly pointed out you should not just blindly trust someone asking for a serial number until/unless they have been confirmed to be official representatives.

I see the whole thing as benign instance of misunderstanding which is very easy to do in an online forum!

I really felt that your generous use of the F-words and hells in your response above was uncalled for
