The most successful people are those that can focus on one thing. And take that thing to its limit. Be confident in your achievements. DO NOT seek approval through others, for you will always encounter dissapointment. Being a father myself, I always focus on my childrens' inadequacies, because they reflect the inadequacy in myself. And I only want the best for my kids. Its a parent thing. Don't take your father too seriously. Ultimately, he wants you to be happy. The next time he criticizes you, just tell him: Dad, Brycing makes me happy. Would you rather I be happy or melancholy. Bryce is a low end tool. Eventually, you will move onto more professional tools. If you're good and show talent, those tools will lead to a career. Example: I started making resum in PageMaker for fellow students. My first attempts sucked, but I very quickly became very good. Soon, students were offering me $35 per resum My degree is in Film Studies with a Minor in English Lit. But my first job was designing slides for speaker support in PageMaker. I then went into advertising using Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator as a Graphic Designer. If you model, and become good, you could start selling your models here at 'rosity. Then when the first paycheck comes in, show it to your Dad. Hang in there, and follow your passion. Be confident that there is a future in what you're doing. And even later in life, if you drop this hobby entirely, the experiences you've learned will serve you in other things. Take it from me, I've been a Soldier, a Teacher, a Carpenter and now a Graphic Designer. I use my experiences in all those fields daily. No skills go to waste. Follow your passion. You can't go wrong. And we're behind you 100%! Curtis

Caution: just a hobbyist

Well said Bandolin, exercising an artistic passion is about self expression, others may not understand or appreciate what you do, but it's done as your own feeling not others. My wife hates anything to do with computers, but there you go, she accepts that my day job needs them but hates that there may be a hobby there too, or she did until I managed to pull off the odd good render (mainly flukes but we can all rise out of mediocrity sometimes)

I started out printing businees cards and posters. (My wife said it keeps me off the streets) Now I publish small stuff for peps all over and look after charity internet sites. There's a queue for my work....I don't even have to advertise......Now my wife wishes I was on the streets....

Fo3, your dad wants to think himself lucky that you are sat at home on the computer using bryce and/or spending your money on models, if you don't build them yourself. You could be out walking the streets causing trouble or taking some form of drugs or drinking. What is it with parents these days, they don't want to see their kids in trouble or hooked on drugs yet when the child finds something to do they enjoy the parents don't give them any form of encoragement(sc). Fo3, you do what makes you happy and if your folks don't like it you quote me...tell them to build a bridge and get over it, you are happy in expressing yourself with bryce. Keep up the great work :)
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.
I second to all the above - and remember one more thing: people who don't do Bryce or any other kind of CG work themselves, have abselutely NO CLUE of the effort and work that is put into it, unlike if they see a tradiotional painting. Keep it up :)

Fo3: This is just so simple. Show your Dad this thread and the comic forum you post these amazing renders on....I'll bet he'll be so proud! and the one above is just awesome!

Fo3, I graduated high school in '86, landed a great paying job that I really had no interest in (and because I felt like my folks WANTED me to be doing this, i.e. the stable office job thing), skipped college cause of the paycheck I was already getting, and spent the next 10 years slaving away during the day and spending all my free time at bars drinking. Around the age of 30 I realized I had wasted a good portion of the last 10 years. Made a career change to a passion I'd always had and became an entry level graphic designer, taking a major paycut but was extremely happy with life. I came to Bryce, Poser and others later in life, and my only regret is that I didn't get into this a heck of a lot sooner. Fo3, your stuff rocks, stick with it. Your Dad will come around. My Mom wanted nothing more for me to get into that good paying office job, but even she says she sees how much happier I am doing what I love. I'm sure your Dad will feel the same way given time. Thanks for the 'token'! :) -New to the Family
Aahh, its all whining until the money starts to roll in... To make your dad understand a little better, heres something you can try. Ask him to give up his most precious hobby/what he loves more than anything. That should be pretty close to giving up art. Difference is though, art is not just a hobby, its a way of life.

Well, I'm lucky, my entire family is involved in the 'ARTS' in one form or another, painitng, music, sculpture, writting, performance arts, etc. We were always encouraged to persue what made us happy....but I can see how your parents think, my hubby thought I was wasting time doing my site and CGI, offering freestuff, and brokering online until I started to pull in some cash. You can point to StarTrek, StarWars, and other scifi movies saying that CGI will eventually lead to jobs within the movie industry, and wouldn't your Dad be proud to see your name in the credits of a blockbuster movie! Do what makes you happy, if that's creating cgi, then do it!

Without negelecting the creator, follow the dream, be creative as God made you creative, if you can earn a living doing what you love then great, you have struck gold. If you can't make living doing it but like to do it. Then make time to do it a goal. Never let life be all about making money with no time for being creative, if you do you could rot and die.

And all you Youngsters who have the Opportunity to do 3D graphics while you are Young are Sooooooo lucky... I wish they had 3D in the 80's when I was in High school but in the early 80's they were just glorified word Processors/Typewriters... Can you Imagine what they games would look like Now if we had this type of technology back then...Just look in 10 years thats what it would look like now if we had This Technology back then...

Hi thurr fellow Brycians! Er...I'm sorry for wasting your time fellas but I need your Help. Sometimes I feel depressed, why? well because I am not acknowledged. Not by 'big' firms or even top class artists,no.But because my folks at home think I waste my time creating.I started using Bryce 2003 and since then my dad feels kinda disappointed that I don't have other interests. Please I think I need encouragement. I feel, anyone who CAN create should be appreciated and respected.Once again,I apologise for wasting your time. It's just that you guys are a Family to me.And I love you. Thanks. Fo3.
