Hi all, Here is a model i'm working on . It's a" frogilla", some kind of crossover between a frog and a gorilla . At the end, it looks a bit like E.T.( the character in the Spielberg movie, is that the english name ?), don't you think ? Lots of areas need some more work, but i wanted to post it anyway . I'm waiting for your input ! litst litst.@freesbee.fr

Thanks for your comments, guys . You'right, cutcopypaste, all was done in the vertex modeller . When finished, i'll try to make it poseable . I don't have Poser now, and i have one question : will Poser alone will allow me to do this ? litst

ClintH ( ) posted Fri, 23 February 2001 at 5:52 PM

I think so. I use PHI Builder and UV Mapper between Carrara and Poser. But, I think Poser has a grouping tool and all. I've just never done it that way. Clint

You can also "Poserize" a mesh in standard Poser. You can also do it "pre-Poser", which would be the more standard way. Slice the mesh and name the parts, write a PHI file, then bring it into Poser. There are many tutorials available, Bushi's is one of the originals, Clint has a tutorial on his site, ScottA has a downloadable tutorial, sorry to anyone else I missed.

Thanks a lot ! Your explanations really help me :) Poser is still a bit expensive for me, do you think buying a previous version ( if i find it ! ) would worth it ? The method described in Clint's tutorial makes sense to me . It looks like an easy way to do that . And the tut is greatly made ! Months ago, i said that i'd like to make a vertex modelling tutorial . Making this model made me understand what i wanted to learn, so the tutorial is getting closer ! But before that : my website ! litst litst.@freesbee.fr

I like him...he's pretty cool looking, and you obviously have MUCH more patience than I do! Would be awesome if he was poseable! Thanks again for the meatball shader advice...I also sent Eovia a message about the bug, hopefully they will fix it along with some other stuff. rockjockjared

You're talking about patience, rockjockjared, in fact once you get the knack, modelling in the vertex modeller can be quite fast . I've done this model last night in an hour ( no more no less ), to see if the techniques i use can be effective . Well, it surely still needs some work but there is some details already : eye sockets, nostrils ... Ears and hair are a pain to me . I wonder if other softwares modellers are that much productive than Carrara's vertex modeller ?... litst litst.@freesbee.fr

Same model, subdivided twice .

Very very cool. I haven't even tried using RDS's vertex modeller; it frightens me.... By the way, yes, the movie was called "ET" in english. - Chip

I'm really glad to see your models. I now see that I am still using way to many vertices to try and get the same results. Thanks a million litst. Stacey

Thanks for your kind comments ! An image tells more than a long speech ! My advice, Stacey : try to "suggest" the shape, at first . I mean, some flaws will appear very early in the modelling process, if you're not a 3D god ! I always try to fix them little by little, this way, i won't keep them til the end . Working with a few vertices allows to adjust the shape easily . You can then add details, subdivide manually the unesthetic lines ... And control the poly count ! The final frogilla should be less than 5000 polygons with only one subdivision of the lo-poly model . That was my two cents . For the fun, i've posted a very early version of the frogilla . Don't laugh ! BTW Stacey, your troll model was really good ! litst

litst, showing your work like this makes it much less intimidating to think about trying to model. Thanks for showing your methods.
