Subject: Increasing Runtime Memory in Poser 4

I have seen a subject on this, yet am unable ti find it right now. Last night, after downloading quite a few things into my Runtime folder, Poser4 started getting slow, and at one point told me that I was out of memory and needed to increase my memory. I do not know how to do this and apparently I will need to. I have since then gone in and uninstalled Poser4 and then reinstalled a clean version, and then added only the content that I know that I want. This made it somewhat smaller, yet I still thought increasing the memory that is allocated to Poser4 wouldnt hurt. My system specs are: 519 Intel Pentium 4 Processor 3.06 GHz 533 Mhz FSB 160 GB 7200 RPM Hard Disk 512 MB There shouldnt be any reason that I couldnt run this program easily on this machine. All help is appreciated !!

wait for more answers, but I believe that this also happens if Poser can't find something connected with a path in the character or other files.

In poser 4 you can delete the rsr file in the geometry folder.(Only these). Sometimes they get corrupted and cause the out of memory message. Also make sure you have the memory update for Poser4/Artist installed. As far as actually increasing the memory for Poser you can't. You can adjust your virtual memory though.

How do I increase the virtual memory on my PC?

You can either go to pc shop and buy ram sticks to slot into your motherboard, OR adjust swapfile for windows - do this with care though - I've tried that and system was unstable. At 512 though u should have plenty - I'm running WinXP and P6 quite happily along with a number of other programs

Hmmmm, I'm not too sure if 512mb RAM is enough. If you take what WinXP and any background processes take, the maximum you will have spare is 256mb RAM. That is no where near enough for Poser + scene (textures included) + rendering overheads IMHO. Cheers

Well this is what Curious Labs says is needed to operate Poser 4: Pentium class or compatible, Windows 95, 98, Me or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later, 32 MB System RAM (64 MB recommended), Color Display (24-bit recommended), CD-ROM Drive, 400 MB Free Hard Drive Space Pentium class or compatible, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, 64 MB System RAM (128 MB recommended), Color Display (24-bit recommended), CD-ROM Drive, 400 MB Free Hard Drive Space I am well beyond that scope, and this is a new PC so I know that it is as up to date as one that was purchased today.

Quote from Microsoft -"Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition (also applies to Pro version)....128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)". As I say, I think most people would agree, once overheads are included (firewall, virus checker + other start-up apps), I really think 1gig RAM is a min. For Poser they are saying you need 64 MB min...if that was the case where would Windows get it's memory? The point I'm trying to make is, I tend to take min system requirements with a pinch of salt and tend to go with my experience of using 3d apps. All I can say is, if the problem persists after deleting the rsr file, then I am certain you will see a big performance increase in getting more RAM :) It's never a waste of money and when you start loading that heavy geometry and large textures in, you'll not regret it ;) Cheers

Do a search for Five Things in the Poser For You forum at Runtime DNA -- the instructions are there, I believe. THe same information is also in the P5 forum over at Poser Pros.

I've only got a measly 384 MB of RAM and an ancient 1GHz Athlon. In the background I have ZoneAlarm, MS AntiSpyware, AntiVir and SQL Server Agent running. Poser 4 runs fine with an 5.8 GB runtime on Windows 2000 -- not the fastest in the world, but no problems. I don't think your specs are the problem. More memory will probably improve your performance but it sounds like you may have some other issue. Turning off the special effects eyecandy in XP will help as well.

Trimming down on unnecessary processes helps a lot. My workstations use about 110 MB physical, running WinXP SP2. "Allocating more memory to Poser" is a relic of its Macintosh origins. Older MacOSes (up till 9.x) allowed the user to set the amount of memmory a program could use. Modern operating systems (Mac OSX, Windows) dynamically allocate memory. "Out of memory" is also Poser 4's way of telling you it encountered something it can't handle (a missing file, for instance) Usually it has nothing to do with available memory. Check your content! (CorrectReference by hogsoft is a very, very handy tool).
