Threw some image textures on it, it's a bit plain, but that's what I was aiming for. I could spend forever tweaking that light bulb, trying to get it look better, but that's enough for now! AgentSmith

Here's with the light turned on. (and a little glow post-work) 14 radial lights inside, with every other one with its shadows disabled as to have a faster render time. This 800x600 pic rendered in about 8 mintues, so not bad. Floor texture was borrowed from my Unreal Tournament 2004, so no putting that up for download, sorry. Enough diversions, back to work. ;o) AgentSmith

My son has Unreal Tournament 2004. I may have to try and bum that floor texture off him.

AS you have the greatest set of textures. Err, I meant that in a manly sort of way. Not the other way. Not that there's anything wrong with the other way. I just meant it in the manly way. Never mind...

marcfx ( ) posted Thu, 26 January 2006 at 4:38 PM

Help AS with his 't' Well Fran. First you get the kettle filled and boiled and while thats going on, place a teabag into a mug or cup and sugar to choice. When the water has boiled, pour over the teabag gently so not to splash and scold you. After right colour or strength of tea pour in some milk to suit. Giving it a good stir and finding a suitable seating area, place yourself down and gently sip the tea and relax. I hope this helps as i know AgentSmith has been tired recently trying to extract his light from his ASP (AgentSmith's presets). Marc (Standing clear of Fran's Bus) LOL

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 26 January 2006 at 7:25 PM

A tutorial on Booleaning? Add or subtract, then group. How's that? Lol...(but, seriously) I'll put up the object for download, after I re-build the bulb, I didn't do it correctly the first time. AS

I meant a Tutorial on how you made and Textured that light thingie. Hooray a freebie!!! Rebuild? I mean I couldn't see anything wrong with the bulb. It will still be able to have that fading bit at each end won't it? I really liked that bit, adds oodles of realism to it. In fact that was just one of many reasons why I wanted to know how the heck you did it. I love how easy Bryce's booleans are - I've just been struggling to understand how Cinema does it - and it ain't easy!

InfernalDarkness ( ) posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 8:11 AM

Indeed, Fran. Most 3D modelers allow you to actually change the shapes involved. Meaning that if you have a 6-faced cube and tore a hole through it with a 16-faced cyclinder, your resulting object would actually contain this geometry. Bryce does boolean modeling by way of filtering, telling the raytracer that an object is either visible, not, or visible and casting textures. So booleans don't work the same (or as well, I might add!) in most other programs because what's happening is weird tesselation effects and inaccuracies. The advantage in other programs though is that you can seriously reduce unnecessary geometry at rendertime, and this is also part of the reason why Bryce's rendering engine is so slow.

Ohhhh That 'T'....(snigger) Yeah AS, that would be great, thanks mate :) Marc (( Unreal Tournament 2004 texture downloads are where???) LOL )

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 8:58 AM

Yes! You've got that right, I've noticed those odd tesselations you mention in C4D's booleans, and it sprang to my mind that Bryce doesn't do that. Unfortunately for Maxon's hopes of selling their latest version to me, I find I am continually comparing C4D to Bryce, and not usually to Maxon's advantage - of course one of the biggest problems I find myself facing is the almost total lack of support for version6 of C4D, compared to the immense support for Bryce - even Bryce4 has loads more stuff for it, including tutorials compared to Maxon. That's not to say that people in the C4D forums have NOT been helpful, they have, but they are more interested in using C4D9 than in anything to do with the older version 6. But that's the difference in the Forums for Bryce and C4D, the C4D forums almost don't want to know you if you have an old version - Brycers just aren't like that, they are amazingly kind and helpful.

"I meant a Tutorial on how you made and Textured that light thingie" The bulb above is incorrect, it is just a barely transparent white cylinder within a very slightly larger glass cylinder. The "bulb" is not booleaned at all, and it should be. So, to simulate a REAL bulb, I later realized I would need to boolean the two cylinders, making a real tube. The positive cylinder would have the glass mat, and the negative one would have the white mat. This correctly simulates a glass tube which has the white coating applied to the inside wall of the glass. The white coating does has a little depth to it. It was originally a dte mat I made to simulate rice paper that was used for the paper walls of a shoji lamp. It's basically just off white with a little bit of an overall sand bump to it. AS

Hey Kirk,

Did you ever get this nice model uploaded?  I can't seem to find it.

P.S. Is there any other way to get the surface it's sitting on in the pic? (What's an Unreal Tournament - one that never happens?  Lol.)
