Ascinct ( ) posted Mon, 07 March 2005 at 11:49 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 3:50 AM

Hello all, First up I just wanna say, Its great to be back!

Ill also want to say, I kind of made a mess of the last post I made of this
topic...So I'll start again...Sorry all...I cant delete it either!

Previous thread can be viewed here

<<<------------------------------------------------------>>>

Now for my question! Ok, anyone here played the game

"Need for speed underground 2"? Anyone love that beautiful Pearlescent
paint you can paint your cars!?

Anyways, what I am wanting to know is, if there is a way that
can I recreate this Pearlescent effect in P5?

Thankyou to all in advance!

Ascinct

P.S I ve added some images with the type of effect I am after!!!

The purple/blue combination looks like one of a variety of auto paints available for sale here in the Marketplace in a set called Magic Mirrors. There are several combinations from magenta/purple to blues, greens, etc. They look good on lots of other stuff, too.

I've achieved similar results usin' Stewer's method http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=2073866 along w/ playin' w/ diffuse & reflection settings Here's my "base" paint job; (BTW; I scooped the car @ http://dmi.chez.tiscali.fr/models1.html if anyone needs free cars ;-)

Note; contrary to Stewer's method, I din't use a sphere map in my reflection node as I wanted my car to reflect the scene itself instead of an arbitrary environment (Poser purism? There are actually NO textures in these pics, only materials :-). Thus these images do not reflect (no pun intended ;-) the true extent/ beauty (?) of the paint.

Ok here is my first try, I used P5's default lights...Not to flashy at the moment,
but the effect is present!

Alright, Its working! A very quick render (though it takes 3 mins....)

Ive gone and added a floor (even though the car is floating on it) and I have
missed some car panels...

Ascinct ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 3:11 AM

Thankyou so much for this and for the awesome link!!! And to think I was going to buy a model car for this! LOL Now I know how this sort of thing is done, there is definitely room for experimentation!!

FreeBass ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 3:32 AM

Velly good, Glasshoppa 8-) Yup, experimentin' is what is all about...thas how I stumbled on it (i.e; don' thank me, thank Stewer....I thank ya too, Stewer, wherever ya are ;-)

Ok, I've fixed a few things, plus added a similar effect to the glass

Ascinct ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 6:26 AM

Oh I forgot to mention in my last post that I am using 2 lights:

  1. Infinite white

  2. Spot Green

Below, Ive modified the material abit.
Car04a-Green_Spotlight03.jpg

Ive added a spectacular colour to the car paint value. The settings used are displayed below.

Paintcolours.jpg

Ive done this so that the car reflects the colour of the surounding lights too!!

Good call on the glass; mine was the exact same mess as my "base" paintjob w/ the transparecy kicked down...or up...or whatever ;-)

Here is another interesting one.

able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.

The link listed above no longer works... Shame. I was interested to see what they were, based on this thread. I guess I'll just have to work up some on my own.

Nice to see my Magic Mirror product mentioned.  However, the link appears to be broken.  The set can be found here...  [ market.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php](http://market.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=28168&vendor=260309)

This are three pics from my gallery (there are much more cars and bikes) using different shaders based on bagginsbill and stewer (thanx, and humble myself). An absolute must is an environment sphere (or in a white background a white egg above the car) to give you the reflections.

But with many  cars you run into the "fly shit" problem where FireFly forgets to render polygons and single one polygon black spots appear. The usual remedies suggested here don't help in this case. They don‘t appear when you render the car in Cinema or 3ds max.

The other thing is that lighting conditions are crucial - one main sun light and an IBL is what I usually use.  The first step then is to make an empty scene, light it, and use bagginsbills IBL out  generator to create the pict for the IBL.

The colors in baggins shader or much more difficult to adjust than in the stewer shader - anyway its a lot of rendering trying to figure the color and shades.

But if you are interested in some shaders - or colors - send me an IM
