Subject: Tut: Controlling Magnet strength and falloff

byAnton ( ) posted Sun, 02 April 2006 at 7:49 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:14 PM

Hi there, First, if you have never used Poser magnets you must quit your job, lock your doors and learn them. From them you can fit your own closes, reshap props, create morphs, and fix things you got that don't look right. Onto the tutorial: There are three parts to a Magnet Deformer 1) The base(Yellow): Used to position the center of the deformer and where everything is sclaed to or the axis on which the mag will bend. Scaling the base does nothing but does make things easier to see. 2) The Magnet(Red): This is what you alter to move, scale, or rotate the geometry. It's rotation center joint and scaling start/destination are defined by the center of the yellow base it sits on 3) TheMazZone(Green outlines falloff sphere): This is what we are talking about today. This sphere defines the area to be affected by the magnet. Only geometry inside this sphere will be changed. -The Center of the sphere is where the effect is strongest. -The Shell of the sphere is where the effect stops. -The radius between the center of the sphere and the shell is the falloff. This is what we will be discussing.

In this image we see the graph that pops up when you doubleclick the zone. The upper left shows the defined 100% and represents center. The lower Right shows the defined 0% and represents the shell. Notice that the shape of the Graph and the deformation on the mesh are EXACTLY THE SAME. The line radiates out from the center, so the side is irrelavent. see... Center is strongest and the edge is weakest falling off to nothing. Well this graph can be eddited to change the fall-off. This would be needed for areas like eyes, teeth, tight spots, etc.

You can click and add control points along the graph just like "Curves" in PhotoShop. By dragging the points up you increase the amount effected and decrease the falloff. Bt dragging the points down you decrease the amount effected and increase the falloff. Notice the shape of the graph and the deformation on the mesh from the zone's center are EXACTLY THE SAME. This can be great for creating vases, pedastals and such from Cyclinders, spheres, etc. And for Mountain and water effects too.

In the last image we see how the effect is Radial, meanign it evenly is the same as it travels out from the center to the shell edge. Remember: -Upper Left of graph is the center of the zone where everythign starts. -Lower Right of the graph is the outer shell where everything stops. -EVerything in-between is the fall-off strength and can be altered just like brushes in Photoshop.

PS: You may be asking why the center of the Mesh is not in the center of the Mag Zone. Well look to the left as notice we had lifted the mesh by raising the magnet off the base. So the mesh did start in the center, where things are strongest. We just lifted it.

Most interesting. Thank you for posting.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

Sure. The cool thing about learning magnets is that it allows you to change the shapes of things. This sphere was just deformers into a candlestick shade by just altering the graph on one magnet.

Nice work, Anton... can you show us the graph for the candlestick? jonthecelt

I just closed the scene. Sorry I didn't save it. I scled the mag on x and Z and lowered the magnet alogn Y before altering the graph.

fair enough... incidentally, is there an area of Poserdom that you don't have a seriously good understanding of? :) jonthecelt

Insanely stoopid kwestshun: What software are you using? Don't recognize the screenshots.

It's just Poser. I cropped the window but that is just the document window. You can select items and then go to Display>Element> and then make outline into woreframe, or shaded into outline, etc.

Thanks Anton, I knew all along it was just Poser. Yep. I was just testing you. Uh-huh. :)

Good explanation. I've used the graph for so long, it's just normal to open it most of the time when I use a magnet. I forget how many people don't use it or even know about it.

I say "Cool Beans" all the time. Have for years and don't know why. I think I started using it in the 80's.

Thank you very much Anton. I've used magnets to tweak clothing fitting and a couple of things, but I never knew of the graph. I see a few days of fun with this :)
