Subject: How to subdivide imported obj's?

danb ( ) posted Thu, 20 April 2006 at 10:38 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 7:11 AM

How can i subdivide an imported .obj model?  Does the model need to be triangulated?  Should i reimport into poser as .3ds?

Also is there a way to setup a rig in either cinema 4d or 3dstudio max's biped rig, and import into poser?

I can rig much faster, setting weights and bones evelopes, in c4d and max.

Thanks.

You Need to do Subdivision in an actual Modeling program Like 3D Studio, Lightwave, Zbrush etcetra. Poser isn't a modeling Application in that aspect. You also can't use 3D Studio or C4D Riggings in Poser. It has it's own format for that. Sorry.

what about the subdivision python script?  that subdivides but doesn't smooth.

Well if it works on imported OBJ's fine, but That's a Script process, not a built in Poser feature. You might check the Poser Python forum and see if there's a script that will smooth as well. Me personally, I load anything I need subdiveded and smoothed into ZBrush 2.0 and it takes like 4 clicks. I wasn't aware there was a script for subdividing simply because I don't use much Python in Poser yet, aside from PhilC's Wardrobe Wizard and some dabbling with Kamiliche's PuppetMaster.

Thanks,

Yeah i am using c4d for modelling and everything else.  I got a job for Poser so i need ot rig a model from c4d.

I think i'll import my same .obj as a subdivided .3ds.

Does poser use .3ds files better than a .obj?

.3ds is a very old format, you'd be better working with .obj

& I'm sure c4d has some option for subdividing..(I've never used it,but I'd be surprised if it didn't)

ok thanks.  yes c4d is the best all around app imo.  wish i could rig with it for this job.  but oh well.

thanks for all your help.

You can subdivide using PoseRay. Import an obj model, subdivide and then re-export.

good luck,

No, Poser's "native" geometry format is Wavefront OBJ. You must have your model in that format to be able to rig it. - Edit - it's worth adding that if you use Poser 5 or 6, the polygon smoothing feature often makes subdivision unnecessary for organic models.

The Poser Tool Box has tools to triangulate, subdivide and smooth. The resulting mesh retains the original UV mapping, materials and grouping.

Will morphs still work after subdividing?

It's all fun and games...

No, because you will have doubled the number of vertices.

But ......

  1. Load the original object.
  2. Load the new subdivided object.
  3. Advance to frame 30
  4. Set the morph in the original object.
  5. Enter the Cloth Room
  6. New Simulation
  7. Clothify the subdivided object.
  8. Set to collide with original.
  9. Assign all faces to the constrained group.

Now when you run the simulation the subdivided object will be drawn into the morphed shape and may be used as a new morph target.

English bob, if you use the setup room in poser then any 3d file format that poser can import can be used.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Sat, 22 April 2006 at 6:18 AM

Really? I hadn't realised that. Course, I never use the setup room so I wouldn't. Thanks for the info.
