Subject: OT a bit, cd burning software?

anxcon ( ) posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 11:58 PM · edited Fri, 07 February 2025 at 3:01 PM

a while ago i went from CDs to using DVDs, and i have rather alot :P using nero 6 to burn them

a problem i keep running into, is after about 32,000 files, the program freezes up -_-
rather annoying when its only up to around 1GB out of the 4.7GB haha

so any solutions out there?

dont tell me to goto CDs though :P too damn small, and this is backups, using a HD already

Which version of Nero?  The one that came bundled with my dvd burner was about 17 years old (not really) but was 2 or 3 versions behind the current version which I bought.  Also you need to make sure that burn in compatability mode (in options just before you start burning) is ticked.   That alone probably will do the trick regardless of the version you're using.

oh and its freezing up at the "add files" stage, with 32k files, cant get anywhere near burning :P

ghelmer ( ) posted Sat, 29 April 2006 at 1:33 AM

perhaps see if there's any updates?!??!!??  That's really strange!  Is your hd fat32 or ntfs?  Is DMA mode enabled?  Do you have the right type of ide cables for your burner???   There's a multitude of things it could be!!!  Whenever any clients have asked me to troubleshoot there burners I always just end up slapping in a new one!!!  :b_crying:

It could also be the media or the speed of the media (e.g.: trying to write at 4x - if drive supports it - with 2x media won't work).  For writing DVDs, I never had success with Nero (maybe that has changed since my last version).  I use RecordNow!  It may be crap, but it can write a DVD.

As ghelmer suggests, make sure:

  1. Latest firmware on CD/DVD drive
  2. Latest burner software + updates
  3. Cabling, DMA, Mode, Filesystem (NTFS is the only way to go for harddrives - ever)
  4. Make sure you are using a CD/DVD format (not NTFS, FAT32, or something OS dependent) - something like Joliet or ISO9960

Also check that you are closing the DVD (DAO) - unless it's DVD-RW and you plan on adding to/removing from it.

If none of that works, might be time for an exchange of burner drive.

the burner isnt the problem o_O it never reaches that stage

  1. i open nero
  2. start a new project (in this case DVD data)
  3. i try to add my poser runtime which is ever growing, if over 32k files are in the "to burn" list
then the program locks up, before it finishes adding to the list

my drive is an external CD/DVD-RW drive plugged into USB2, works fine in any case but this
i'm thinking there is a max number of files that can be writen maybe?
guess il try the new nero7 -_- someone claims it fixes that issue

Never had any problems with Nero 6, but I use an internal drive. Used it also to backup all my content with a lot of files. So I think it could be an unlucky combinations of issues. At least install all the updates available.

I have an LG DVD Writer, but also my Plextor CD Writer works fine with Nero.

  • Update the driver for your drive, or try other media or settings. Just another suggestion.

what about zipping up collections? it's what I'd do.  I'm trying to imagine 32,000 files I'd need to zip up (but I've got about 21,000 zips..)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Drat! I thought I'd posted this earlier, but somehow the post got lost (probably my own fault).

32,000? This is probably an internal (software) limit of the number of files in the list for a single write. (If you investigate further it'll probably turn out to be 32,767. The maximum number that can be held in a 16-bit value, if you include -ve values).

What Pakled says makes sense. Zip up the files, then burn them.

That way there's only 1 file to burn.

Alternatively (if you don't have room on your HD for a zipped runtime), you could try burning each directory separately...or zipping each directory and burning them individually (deleting the zips as you go..)

Cheers,
Diolma

You could also re-org your burning such that you have a good number of large files on each DVD, and so none of them ever hits the 3,767 limit. A bit of a hack, but it should be viable. I burned my entire runtime to 8 DVD's a few months ago, doind just that, using nero.

Truth has no value without backing by unfounded belief.

thought of zipping before, but decided not to, for ease of use
otherwise i'd create a dozen or so ISO or BIN files, and burn those
just use daemon tools to mount and tada! external runtimes
but like i said, i decided against this, for speed and ease

organising better wont change much, when 32k limit is around 1GB
some might say stay with CDs, but i WANT all DVDs :(

HD space isnt an issue for sorting, and these are backups, so not staying on the HD

o well

When it comes to Poser Runtime backups, I zip each of the main folders (Geometries, Textures, and the larger library folders - characters, poses).  That reduces the number of files significantly.  But (and read this carefully) I have on occassion run into bad zip archives on my CDs/DVDs.  When that happens (although it is just as useless if files are bad in general), you are out.  When a zip archive full of thousands of files is corrupt, you lose all of them.
