Subject: New Galleries are here!!!

lwperkins ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 8:11 AM

Right now the galleries are loading too slowly for me to use them--I think the enhanced content may be the culprit. You had an intermediate version of the site that ran pretty fast two weeks ago, (and I really like the "Click the image to close window" feature). I also find in my gallery the "what I have recently viewed" feature sort of creepy. I don't think anyone really cares and the thumbs take up Rosity brain space. Also I don't need to have to profile pics either--I know cgtalk does it but that doesn't mean it's a smart use of resources. Go lean and fast, IMO, and you'll get a lot more traffic.

bbratche ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 9:21 AM

100% agree withlwperkins! Click and close was great... now a pain... and the recent viewed... yuck... I've clicked on a thumb and then thought... I wish I hadn't done that!!!!!

Lean mean and user friendly I say!

Quote - sorry i  not  can enter in the gallery :-(  and in the marketplace  i need change the www with market every time i need see a product .... it is a mine problem or what.????.. thanks in advice Orietta

I have exactly the same problem, but a friend of mine can see everything without errors so I'm not sure what the problem is. To see the gallery I have to manually type in excalibur in the adress to get it to work. I cleared my cache so don't know what else to do.

IO4 ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 10:35 AM

Ok, here's my penny's worth;  likes and dislikes of the  gallery /site changes.

Likes: I do like the general look of the main gallery pages. I think the white background is ok. I'm glad to see the upload date has returned, rather than how many hours ago it was uploaded.

Dislikes:

Homepage and contact - when clicking on the artist's name you don't go to the Homepage anymore - we see the gallery and stats. It was better before - you could see the link to contact the artist or the gallery link if that's what you needed, together with their bio etc. Everything in once place was easier and quicker to navigate.

Having to zoom in on an image to see at correct size - it was better before when you just had to click the thumbnail preview in the main gallery to link to the full  size. When time and effort have been spent creating the image I want people to be able to see it as it was intended.  I would be interested to see how many people bother to zoom in - too many clicks to get to an image as it is intended  - why?

Avatar space - is it  really necessary to have these all over the place - it's ok in forums but why at the top of the image?

Comment space - I preferred the comment layout we had before - it was nice and quick to read ( again, why do we really need avatar space here? ) .

Stats, stats, stats - why do we need to see how many images the artist has and when the last one was uploaded. Generally, too many stats - have members really requested all this info? Too much information for just wanting to view or show an image in my mind. Maybe that should just be on the artist's homepage or something.

I know the Rendro team must have put alot of work into doing all this, and I know sometimes it takes a while to get use to change, but I really can't see the benefit of some of the changes. Can anyone enlighten me? If I have got any info wrong above, please someone set me straight.

Having said all that, I do still love this site and the community and appreciate the fact that the site is free. I feel though that  the overall look is not as inviting as before, and I really hope that that does not deter others from joining or put current members off - that would be a shame. That was what set the site apart from some of the other large art sites that I have been too. If I would have just come across the site now, I wonder if I would have taken much notice of it or been very tempted to join.

I do hope the admins take some note of the complaints about the galleries from members, and maybe one or two changes could be made.

It's a bit confusing at the moment, there are different logins, it seems. Sometimes I had to log in several times (at excalibur and now there is another one: camelot). Finally what seems to work fine is: http://www.renderosity.com/login.php then click on the Galleries link in top navigation. At least this worked fine for me. I didn't have to log in for the forum seperately.

I have been trying upload to the gallery but I am getting an error message and it won't upload the picture just the description.

It is within the size, is anyone else having problems.

Hi,

Regarding the changes:

  1. The 3 step viewing, thumb to in between to full size really stinks. Please revert to going from thumb direct to fullsize !!

  2. It appears I can no longer provide people with external links to my own gallery on R'osity - please fix this as soon as possible !!

Still get no ebots and apparently no one gets ebots for my work and now my gallery says i only have 1 image after 3 years of posting,,instead of hundreds of people viewing my work i get a half dozen now.and there is no way to even get to my profile...... it took me a half hour just to find the gallery again....This place is kaos... in the newsletter they all act like everthing is just perfect out in the new gallery...no warning of what might be expected ,,,just adds for the store and a big pat on their own back..Sorry i am just telling like it is... and from this end nothing is working correctly yet....and the one thing i really dislike the most is the report button..if the prudes werent bad enough lets make it easier to make trouble and turn everyone into moderators..Ridiculous!needless to say i dont like the new site at all..but will stick it out to see what happens..

Apologies - make my complaint that the details of how to link to someone's gallery should be in a separate box like it used to be and not hidden in the rest of the mostly useless information in tiny text !

StaceyG ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 2:55 PM

Make sure you have put your settings in your profile to receive ebots. Ebots are now working

jherrith ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 3:03 PM

Next problem to fix then is the ability to update "Gallery Subscriptions" I had no idea what I thought they were for but I certainly didn't expect it to be a notice for every single picture uploaded by everyone.

The problem is that you at least I can't make the changes to unsubscribe and save those changes. It reverts back each and every time to what was selected.

lunaE ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 3:14 PM

Yes they are working now. Just received 1 ebot he he. I am very happy again and thank you.

I know it's hard to except change sometimes and I'm realy trying to get used to the new galleries but my opinion so far is "arrrrrrgh!" I tried to upload an image last night 5 times and could not ever get it to go thru, so I posted at another site, so there new gallery, take that (poke, poke).

Maybe I'll have time this weekend to figure this thing out, lol.

Ebot ARE working ..and when i get Ebot hahahaha everybody should GET em ...

But one little thing left well euh 2

1 i did some gallery subscription... and i dont want them anymore BUT i can delete "uncheck" em all

but always 1 remains ..clearing em all does not work... when i try to uncheck um all nothing happens

when i leave on the rest goes unchecked.. thats a strange little propblem :}

2 please please can you stop the cropping of the images in the gallery's...

You "stacey" wrote that the changes where made with members wishes in mind "by yearly poll"

But please do R'o a favor make a good poll .. must the cropped "preview STAY or GO..

I cant see any benefit to the speed of the site or traffic to keep it when "nobody" wants it.

If the poll says STAY well then the people spoke and the rest have to accept it...

the rest of the gallery is just getting used to..

Thnx for reading my bla bla bla again

I'm getting ebots for forum posts.

But I'm still not getting ebots from my favorite artists. I checked my options, they're set to receive ebots when a favorite uploads a new image. I haven't changed any settings.

On a brighter note, I think I can actually get to like these new galleries, thanks for all your hard work :)

danamongden ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 5:10 PM

Ditto on the ebots.  I get them for forum, gallery feedback, and being added to someone's favorites, but I don't get it for seeing my favorite artists uploading new images.  My profile indicates I should get them for that too.

And yeah, I do like the general look of the new galleries -- EXCEPT for the 700px resize, but I've bludgeoned that subject in another thread.

Wow, the new gallery format is atrocious. I dont know why they went and changed it when nothing was wrong with it.  All the links were easy to find and you could get to where you wanted to go. Everything seems illogically spread out now. The default color / menu scheme could use and easy edit feature like it used to have in your profile so it can be moved and colored to your liking... Needless to say Im not a happy camper.

bogwoppet ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 2:44 AM

Hello Stacey, I realise you are being inundated with comments, suggestions, complaints and questions and I appreciate how hard this must be. It might have been a good idea to have had a list of known problems and progress status for each of the issues with an estimated completion date, this would have reduced the amount of posts here and cleared up much of the confusion. A check-list like this would have reduced your headache while keeping us informed and up-to-date.

Many of us post because we are uncertain if a particular issue is unique to us - it's not so bad if everyone is experiencing the same problem. I have been trying to establish why my favourite artists and images have gone from my homepage along with my photo and I'm trying to find out if they will return?  The thumbnail for my freestuff Item has also vanished from my homepage. If I knew that eveyone had the same problem I wouldn't have been so concerened.

As it is there are so many threads and posts to wade through and it can be very confusing. I don't think anyone expected the transformation to have gone without a hitch - 'the best laid plans' and all that but I do think that this has been handled poorly and a better structure for keeping up informed would have eased your (Renderosity's) burden and reduced our frustration.

Actually, that is what is happening. There are a couple of posts that are pure negativism, but many of us really want to help make the galleries (forums, marketplace, whatever) better.

The problem is that most of the suggestions are ignored. I still cannot see why some universally supported requests are not implemented, while other features - that we do NOT want - are diligently worked upon. Case in point: the automatic resizing of images.

Mercytoo ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 9:40 AM

I'm having the same ebot problem as other people have posted here. Get them for the forum posts, for the marketplace, but none for fave artists. I found my fave artist list (which was no easy task) and sure enough, people have uploaded new images. Who knows what I'm missing! I can't find how you get to your personal gallery either anymore, not without going to the link that says "old front page". How do you do it from the new front page? I just can't find a way to get to my gallery or my homepage, etc. And will a feature be implimented to move the menu from the right side of the page to the left?

IO4 ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 9:58 AM

What do you write in the field marked "where to place image within notes' on the upload page, and do we still have a homepage - I can't see the page where members can IM me?

I did get one favorite artist ebot mailing Friday night, but just one.  From checking the galleries, I see I should have had some since.  So, maybe it's just working intermittantly?

Mercytoo ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 10:19 AM

IO4... the only way I can figure out how to get to my home page is to click on the link that says "old front page" on the right hand side. Then you'll have the drop down boxes where you can select your gallery, homepage, etc. I haven't yet figured out how to do it on the new front page.

Mercytoo ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 10:22 AM · edited Sat, 17 June 2006 at 10:22 AM

Well, I'm finally able to get into my fave artist section on my homepage, and I see that Primaltruck had infact uploaded his latest image around 12:15 am today. So, I should have gotten an ebot if they were fixed yesterday afteroon, but I did not get one. =(

lunaE ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 10:23 AM

It´s easy to find your galleries. Just go to gallery and on top you will see this.

Click on your gallery and there you are.

ok, I'm not gonna complain about ebots or the site, got my two cents in a while ago.... what I want to know, is there anyone that knows why they arent working?  I did some research into the problem and found that if someone makes a new account, they get bots for favorites and such, but if you made an account before the change, for some reason they don't work.  Maybe it's just me and I got lucky, but my current account isn't receiving bots for anything and the new one is.

News Flash!!! Ripping Alert!!!!

Renderosity  ripped off the Full-View scripts of DeviantArt and put it in here. Including a DeviantGallery script (for Firefox) that can show minor info of the artwork you're viewing in a member's gallery.

I'm a member of both DeviantArt and this site and I've never seen a ripped script like this off another site from the original site.

DevianArt is the original site to code the Full-View script and a member there created the Firefox script for the DeviantGallery script.

If you guys don't believe me, take a look at these screenshots of both of my galleries here at Renderosity and DeviantArt.

I'm sorry I have to do this but's the only way to get proof and evidence.

williamsn ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 9:49 PM

Ummmmm no we didn't. And I would know. That script came legally and free from a Javascript Toolkit site and then was substantially modified to fit Renderosity's purpose. Not once was deviantART's code ever looked at. Sorry to shoot you down, man. Please don't post about things you don't know about. N

Hi Stacey,

Okay I went away for three days to cool off and wait until a lot of the bugs have been fixed.  Today I came back to find that someone had posted a script to turn the gallery pages black with white text.  This is a wonderful solution to one of my major headaches.  I am also very happy to see that I can click away the large version of the gallery picture.

What I am confused about is why I can't even find my own list of favorite artists and the comments I made about them.  When I go to that area that was my community homepage here I find the color of the pages wrong (from my script changes for both the forums and the gallery) and when I click on what appears to be a link to my favorite artists nothing happens.  I noticed that the server seems to be called Camelot.  Am I to understand that my community homepage is now on a different server?  The only reason I wrote comments about my favorite artists was to let other people visiting my homepage know what kind of art each person did and therefore they would click to go visit one of my favorites.

A few days ago I did find a page with my favorites listed-I'm not sure how I got there now-and that was when I was quite upset with the tiny size of the font because I couldn't hardly differentiate the name of the favorite artist and my comment that I wrote about them.

The picture on my homepage is also gone.  Am I to understand that this another part of renderosity is in the middle of being changed?

The speed of the galleries and the forums is back up to normal-at least for only having between 700 and 800 visitors according to the number at the top of the page, right now at 1:30 a.m. California Pacific Coast Time zone.  It's a nice speed but we'll see how that goes a when there are more visitors during the more normal hours.  I would think that people in Europe would be online now.  If the numbers stay down I can only think that it's because many of the members aren't visiting anymore, but that's hard to say.

My major concerns at this point are to find out what happened to my homepage, and to find a way to increase the text size that I still cannot hardly read in the galleries.

I do miss the simple ability to see the number of comments for an image in my gallery under the thumbnail.  I have not trying to upload since this is all changed so I can't stay to the ability to easily select all marketplace merchant to give a credit link-but if it's not like before where there was a drop down and I can hit a key on my keyboard to at least get in the right area alphabetically I'm afraid I will not be very motivated to put in the links.  I have physical disabilities that make it very difficult for me to negotiate with a lot of arm and hand movements, and I can no longer type a great deal.  I rely on the trackball mouse, and speech to text software.  I bring this up because I have found out that there are a lot of people with vision and physical disabilities trying to use this community also.

I am sorry that I got so extremely upset.  I just think it isn't fair to force the user's to fix the problems (i.e. find and create scripts instead having some way to choose them within the forum's own coding) of a major web site.  I really am trying to stay apart of this community, it's just so difficult instead of being an easy pleasurable experience.

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
