Subject: OMG! Please Help me with my PNG files!!!!

I'm still using my Desktop which has Windows2000 on it.  I don't know what I had on my laptop (Windows XP Home)  that allowed me to view PNG files without any fuss. I just clicked them and they opened for me to see the image.

When I moved over to my desktop and tried to view PNG files, I was getting a window for QuickTime opening up.  I've never downloaded QuickTime to my knowledge.  Anyway, before the QuickTime window would view the PNG I had to click exit or later or something, and then the image would preview in a mini window that I would have to resize. The only image file associated with it seemed to be the PNG files.

It was a pain in the butt so I deleted the program from my computer the otherday. Only then I couldn't open my PNG files anymore and all the icons had a MS Word Icon.

I tried to find that QuickTime program on the net again, but I don't know the name of it other than it had "QuickTime" in it.  I did find some other viewer that allows for viewing of PNG files. I forget the name, but it's a demo version.    Whatever it is is driving me crazy. I have folders and folders filled with large red lizard icons that just jump out at me when I open the folder.  They are so large and bright that I can't see anything else because my eyes just seem to focus on these hideous red icons!  The image attached shows what I mean.

Does anyone know of a free image viewer that I can use to just view PNG files? Or the name of the QuickTime one that I  had?  I know I can associate the PNG with my graphic program, but I don't want to that because then I have to wait for the program to open before the image views. I've tried associating them with IE but that doesn't seem to work.

I just found this on the net. This is the window that I was getting with the QuickTime program.

It was a pain in the but to have to click a button and then resize a window, but it's preferable to these hideous icons that I have now,  LOL

Does anyone know where I can get the above pictured program?  I want the free version, not the pro one (funds are tight)

Here is Quicktime 7.1 free download. You will still get the window you see just click later.

Right-click on a .png file, choose "Open With" and you should be able to pick Choose Program... from the options, then....

Select "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", and put a tick in "Always use this program when opening files of this type."

No more Quicktime malarky, hopefully :-)

I think that's what I  had on my laptop which had Windows XP.  But I'm using another computer that has Windows 2000, and I don't seem to have anything called "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".  I wish I did have that, because it was so much better than having to click and click to see an image.

Ah. Can't help with that, sorry. I've never used W2k.

Thank you!!!  Now I have normal icons again,  LOL

I love the colour red, but man, that was too much for me!!  hehe

Thanks Karen.  I'm nosing around MS to see if it's a free download from them. It seems like it's a stape with XP installation, so maybe they have it as a download.  It's not a very user friendly site though.

I found an "Imaging" located under "programs/accessories"  but when I try to associate the PNG file to it, I get an error message saying:  "The Document's Format is Invalid or Not Supported".

EDIT:  Well, that seems to be something to do with my HP all in one printer.  lol

The icons in your first image are from Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ Which is a great free image viewer. The Windows Imaging program is worthless, it will use only a few file types. At least you got it fixed.

Yes, that's it :)  But while it works very well, and I did like it, the icons are just too difficult to look at, and it's hard to see any other files in the folder. The Irfanview  icons just leap off of the page and hurt my eyes.

If there was a way to change the icon to something smaller and less bold, I would use the Irfanview program because it seems better than the QuickTime one.

This site has, along with some other nifty stuff, a free viewer. Fresh View is the one you need. It has a HUGE list of things it can view. PNG files being one of them. Helen

Open Irfanview, then go to Menu/Options/Properties, Extensions tab, Miscellaneous button will show different icons in the program you can use. I don't know if there is a way to use icons from Windows or another program.

Acadia ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 11:42 AM

Thank you! I'll try the Fresh Viewer and IrfanView again and see which one I like the most.  Icons seem like such a little thing, but when amassed together they become very important,  LOL

I remember trying the Fireworks demo program a few years ago. That program is like a parasite. It took over association of all of my graphic files and changed the icon to it's own icon. I couldn't tell one image type from another because the icon was all the same for all image files and there was no way to change them.  Plus there was no option in the program allowing you to change the file associations.  After I uninstalled the program, my images had no file association at all, and while I could reassociate them to other programs, I couldn't change the icons back to default Window's ones.  I started with default Windows icons, ended up with  all Fireworks icons, and then all IE icons.

After posting on their forums I found that it is a bug (or was, not sure if they fixed it or not),  but there was a program you had to run after uninstalling Fireworks  in order to be able to return file associations back to Windows default.

I get so used to icons being one way, I wish programs wouldn't automatically change the look of the icon when they are associated with the file.

I use IrfanView all the time for everything and I have been using it since I've had my first (windows) computer in 1998. I love it. But if you install it make sure you also install the "all-plugins". BTW, I think it is the best screen capture program available. Easy, fast and good quality images.

In an Explorer (folder) window select:

  1. View->Folder Options->File Types

  2. Scroll thru the file types and select the png type with the offending squashed cat icon (what it looks like to me)

  3. Click Edit->Change Icon

  4. Only the Ifranview provided icons will be available.  If you want one of those then it's easier to use wyrwulf's  method above.  If you want another icon, select Browse and find an icon you've downloaded or created or if you select a program (.exe) file, you can use one of the icons associated with that program.  I think Irfanview itself will let you save an image (usually 32x32) as an icon but one of the free icom editor programs is probably a better tool for that.

Thank you :)

I settled on the IrfanView program and the Polar Bear icon.  I still think it's garish (I like the standard windows default icons), but it's better than that flat red dead thing,  hehe.

I bought  "Icon Bank"  several years ago, which is an icon making program, so I'll try my hand at making my own icon and seeing how that works.

I chose the little yellow smiley because it its the one that takes the less room so it doesn't overlap on the previous and next file.

Also, in IrfranView, you can select the thumbnails view and choose the size of the thumnbails (of course, if the thumbnails are of your Poser png thumbnails, you'd best set the size accordingly). In there, you can save either a html page with links to the images or contact sheets with all thumbnails. Very useful.
