I can probably used the clone tool to pick up colour from around the rivet... no, hang on I can't can I? - cos this rivet is on a layer all by itself - so how DO I do it?

If your rivet is a shape layer, that white line is the path. If you click on the path or on another layer entirely, the white line will disappear. It isn't even really there, it just gets highlighted when the shape layer is active.
Other than that ... if it's NOT a shap layer or path, I have no idea what that white line is.
As for the embossing, I would set the height/size higher so it's not so flat looking. This is assuming that you're using Layer Effects to get that effect.
That's it, it was a shape - the elipse to be precise. And yes, I used Layer Style. And Emboss, Drop shadow etc etc.
So how do I make more than one rivet - looking alike?
How do I duplicate it? and should I do that before the Layer Style/Emboss etc bit, or after?
And:
How can I get the colour on the head of the rivet to be just like the background, not a smooth colour like it is here?

Get the rivet to look the way you want it to look, THEN duplicate the layer. Much easier that way ... unless you create all your rivets on one layer first. That's easiest, too.
As for making the rivet just like the background, I would play with the layer blending modes. Make sure the layer style doesn't have a color overlay, though, or the layer blending modes won't work for you with the style overpowering it.

okay, either way will do - so how DO I duplicate one rivet to (for instance) repeat down one side of a texture?
If I just duplicate the layer (20 - or 5 times) all I'll have is 20 rivets all on top of each other and then when I flatten the layers so I have a texture I can use in Bryce - all I'll have is one (possibly very thick) rivet - please please, help?

Take hard brush and increase the spacing until you are satisfied in "brush palette". Make new layer and click with the brush in one corner of the canvas then hold the SHIFT and click on other corner, and you`ll get perfectly spaced rivets. Duplicate the layer and use filter-stylize-emboss. Change the blend mode to overlay :)

Tantarus,
Right, sounds like that's a different way to the way aprilgem was thinking of...
So is your way any easier to get the rivet to look slightly damaged - the way the texture behind it is?
I don't want them to be smooth grey.

I wish someone would. Did you see the message in this thread where I asked you HOW you get a row of rivets using your layers method? - or using ANY method would be nice?
I'm getting desperate here.
I just don't fully understand all the steps.

Don't know about align, never used that before, but someone else just told me exactly how to duplicate... unfortunately I found out how to grunge the rivets AFTER that, so now I'll have to go back and re do all the rivets after doing the grunging...
That's ifg I can remember what pAUL SAID... i'M SO TIRED NOW i COULD SCREAM, AND i HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TOMORROW EARLY GOTTA SLEEEEEEP BEFORE i DROP.

By the way, getting a little testy with people trying to help you isn't very nice. To ask for a step by step tutorial on how to do a single step from another tutorial is just a little bit over the top.
Anyway, in spite of the attitude, I went out of my way to draw you up a diagram. I hope this clears things up for you.
I really didn;t mean to be testy, I'm just pulling my hair out here and I';m too tired to think straight, it's 2 am here and I just HAVE to sleep - please ignore anything you think is testiness, and please believe it wasn't anything of the sort. Just desperation.
Gotta go.
Dead...
I'll come back tomorrow and grovel if you like, very sorry, very tired.
Please don't hate me.

Don't worry about it. I'm already over it. :)
Aprilgem,

Great. So I went out of my way for nothing. Story of my life.
Oh don't!
No no, you didn't do it for nothing, in the first place an image makes this SO VERY much clearer, and in the second place what you've described is not quite the way he told me and yours includes getting them all lined up - which is brilliant! (the other method resulted in a row of rivets around the texture - but all wonky and I had 42 layers!!! and I've got to start all over again as I didn't know how to get them grungy) that's the trouble with trying to figure out something you've never done before - working at it all day until 2am when your brain gives up)
I'm so sorry.
Plus - and from my point of view and even better - I can save your method for later when I (inevitably) forget how to do it.
The other method was told to me in a chat applet, which as you can understand is not conducive to great understanding, or ease of communication.
I'm going to go away now and put every single step into a document for my own use later - and please believe me - your image is going to be the most useful part of that.
Please please, NEVER think your help isn't immensly useful.

Quote - Here is the prewiev of the rivets made with brush, If you want I can send you PSD file. So you can edit them as you like, that would be much easier than explaining the whole proces :)
Tihomir
Oh they look great, I'd very much like to see the file.
Every little bit that helps me fix this firmly in my mind will help.
I seem to need the various techniques involved every now and then - but by then I've forgotten how. So if I can make myself a set of instructions (step by step and thus simple enough for little doapy here) then next time I'll know where to find it. And then maybe eventually I'll learn it enough not to need it. Well.... stranger things have happened. (shrug)
Thanks very much for the offer, and for the work involved in making it. Much appreciated.

A tutorial should be on the site also; and if not Denis Gernain will be glad to help you!
Yes. Very nice rivets I'm sure. Just not quite what I wanted. I was more interested in doing my own rivets with texturing to match the background - more like what aprilgem showed me further up this thread. So thanks but I think I'm sorted on this subject now.

Quote - If you're using layer styles, look in your layers palette at the effects. You can change many of the effects in styles, including, perhaps, the white line.
No no, it's okay - I just hadn't realised that the white line was simply showing that the filled circle was selected - it didn't show up in the actual image - as aprilgem kindly explained.
And yes, I used layers - layer styles I actually used for the drop shadow etc on the rivet.

How can I get the line around the circle to be dark not white as it is here?
How can I get the fill colour to be just like the background, not a smooth colour like it is here?
How can I duplicate the finished rivet after I've added shadows etc...?
4), can I just check how you do shadows? I think it's in Emboss somehow - but I can't get it to look right.
