I would recommend the free program Poseray. Its very easy to use, It has no modelling abilities to get in the way, just read a file in and export the OBJ file.Even though it offers superb rendering, I have often used it just for conversion of 3DS and Lightwave files. Sometimes even for 'correcting' OBJ files that didn't come out of D|S quite right.

Are you sure there isn't anything else to do here? I just installed PoseRay last night, been playing about with it for a while, converting .3ds and .lwo models into .obj format with .mtl file. One small problem: the .mtl file is still being ignored when I import into D|S. I know D|S had a problem with this some time ago, but I thought it had been fixed. Or is there something I could be doing wrong in the import?
I've tried re-loading the new .obj into PoseRay, it comes up all right with all textures applied.
