Subject: .3ds - HELP PLEASE!!! ^^

Can anyone please tell me if these files are compatible with DAZ and how to install them. Thank you. 😄

Not directly - you need to use a free modeller or converter (or a non-free one if you like) to convert them to OBJ files, which DAZ|Studio can read. Look at www.wings3d.com and www.blender3d.com

I would recommend the free program Poseray. Its very easy to use, It has no modelling abilities to get in the way, just read a file in and export the OBJ file.

Even though it offers superb rendering, I have often used it just for conversion of 3DS and Lightwave files. Sometimes even for 'correcting' OBJ files that didn't come out of D|S quite right.

For Poseray:

Import

  1. Goto the input tab (first on the top left, top row)

  2. Click the Load file button to find the folder and file on your drive

  3. Click Load selected

Export

  1. Go to the OBJ output tab (last on the right, top row)

  2. Choose or change the file name

  3. Click the Save file button, choose a folder and press OK

Are you sure there isn't anything else to do here? I just installed PoseRay last night, been playing about with it for a while, converting .3ds and .lwo models into .obj format with .mtl file. One small problem: the .mtl file is still being ignored when I import into D|S. I know D|S had a problem with this some time ago, but I thought it had been fixed. Or is there something I could be doing wrong in the import?

I've tried re-loading the new .obj into PoseRay, it comes up all right with all textures applied.

wow cool , thanx ^^

You're right spottedkitty. I hadn't noticed.

A way round that is to edit the mtl file in notepad. I changed the relative paths for each kd_map statement to the full path and put it in quotes.

eg
map_Kd VADERBUT.JPG

becomes
map_Kd "c:mapsVADERBUT.JPG"
