**OK, I got PS7 a while back. I have been using PSP7-X for so long I can't seem to either learn or adapt to PS7!!! I mean, I have even bought Brush Sets for it an also have some "Actions" but I just can't seem to figure out HOW to USE Them! Gads I have several complicated programs that I learned! Why is this one being so darn hard? Is there a good place to go to learn PS7??? I see all these CS tuts, and it seems that I have a  lot of really dumb questions, and I find I am doing the same thing I do with 'High' end programs like Carrara and Hexagon, I just don't use it because they are not working with me! (*or I really AM stupid!) I found a book that is for PS5 it is HUGE(*3inches thick!) and hardbound! Got it at a garage sale! But I don't know what has changed (from 5-7)since I got 7...so is this book accurate enough to warrant reading? Is/will it have the Correct Info for PS7? Lastly, Adobe treats me like what I am...a NEWBIE! I can't say it isn't embarrassing. I can't help that I couldn't afford it til now. I almost feel like I wasted cash and effort...Please can someone take pity on me>? I work extensively in Poser, and I know that this will help me to get better quality and effects. sigh...If I can ever get the basics nailed.

Yes Tom there is(*ThanX!)...I need to see something that shows where the Basic tools are. I find that the fact that I don't have a "Pointer" icon in PS is really a pain. I am used to doing a lot of "Cut & Pasting" in PSP to achieve different effects. And the fact that I cannot point and click to cut is odd feeling. So where as in PSP I am TOTALLY in my element...in PS I am drowning trying to get a basic foothold. Does that make sense? Also learning to use Layers is really something new. I can do really  difficult things in PSP, mostly they're are my own work arounds that even now I find people will comment on about how "Cool" it looks. Some even assume I am using PS!  Here I have bought these Hair Brushes, and they are not working for me, as they are very large and I have not yet got a feel for how large I can work in PS, I actually work on 3000X2500 in PSP! At 300DPI...but I can't seem to "Fit" things in PS. But it just is "Crowded" looking in PS? Is there a way to get more viewing area? OK thats a lot of things I will leave off for the moment. Looking forward to your advice!

Yeah...that is a good one.

As far as the "Pointer", I'm not sure if this is what you mean...but you can change the way your cursor looks in "Preferences".

PS have pretty hard learning curve. If you need advice on where to find some tool or how to make some effect or how to use layers ask here. Im sure that you`ll get the answer to any question. To use actions follow these steps.

1. Click on Window - Actions to open actions palette
2. To load custom actions, click on little triangle in top right corner of the palette
3. Click on Load actions, find them and open
4. They will apear in the palette
5. If there is more than one action, they will be in the set. So click on triangle next to set and then on one of the actions
6. Click on play button in bottom of the palette and enoy in action.
   You can clear the screen by clicking F key twice and then TAB key, but thats extreme mode when you use only shortcuts. To hide/show the palettes press SHIFT+TAB. Double click on very top of the toolbox to minimize it. Layers are complex area for newbie, so ask specific question :)

The Pointer I mean is like a cursor arrow It is in the top corner of PSP...as in the sample pic. Ariana

Here is another cool feature I like in PhotoShop (I'm not at all familiar with PSP so I'm probably not the one to offer advise on the PhotoShop > to >PSP equivalents.

 

Anyway...If you need to work on a specific area of your image (Lips in this example).

 

Zoom in on it with the Zoom tool.then select "Window > Documents > New Window".

 

This will essentially launch a duplicate of your image.

 

Now select Window > Documents > Tile"

 

Now you can work on the zoomed in area,and see it updated in the new window at regular size.

 

This helps to keep from zooming in,then out to check how your edit is turning out.

 

I'm sure most Paint programs have a similar feature but this is how I use it in PhotoShop.

 

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I think the most important thing in PhotoShop to get a handle on at first is "Layers"

 

I put everything on a separate layer and learned to organize them in to groups and "NAME THEM"

 

If everything is on it's own layer,you have so much more control and flexibility over your image.

 

Don't like something?..just change it's layer while leaving everything else alone.

Plus it gives more control over how things are blended together.

Just this one page has 60 layers. organized in to 5 groups.

It would quickly become unwieldy if they were not grouped and named.

One of the basic things when using layers is duplicate and use of blend modes. Lets say that you have washed out Poser render and you want to get some quick contrast. First click and drag the Background layer (Its allways the first layer) on the second icon from the right on the bottom of the Layers palette (Create new layer icon, looks like a paper). By doing that you have duplicated the layer, another way of duplicating layer is to simply press CTRL+J. Click on the drop down menu where it says Normall and choose Multiply. If the effect is to heavy, click on opacity and lover the amount. Now you can flatten the layers by clicking on little triangle in top right corner and choose flatten on the bottom of the list :)

*Hi Everyone! In case you haven't heard my puter crashed yesterday! I have it debugged and reformatted...but nothing is installed yet...I will do that today. Amazingly I actually saved my 2nd harddrive to my external yesterday morning! I never considered doing that until I got a bug (no pun) up my butt to reorganize Poser! So I copied the entire Drive over to my external and 2 hours later the system got a Worm and crashed!!! WOW! Talk about Kismet! So keep this alive, I promise I will be just as uninfoormed when I have reset all my programs as I am now! LOL!!!

I'm in a similar situation as the original post. I've used PSP for years and recently decided to try to switch over to PS. It's been an incredibly difficult thing to do. I spend literally hours trying to learn how to do something in PS that I could do in 2 or 3 minutes in PSP. Worse, I'm discovering many of the features of PS are actually downgrades from their equivalents in PSP, although there are also a lot of things PS will do that PSP can't, which is why I want to switch. One of the most difficult things is that I can't figure out how to paste data from the clipboard into PS as a new image. If you use Paste it just pastes it into the current image as a new layer. In PSP you go Edit>Paste>Paste As New Image. Can anyone tell me what the PS way of doing the same thing would be?

Yeah...just select  File > New and it will automatically give the clipboards dimensions.

the select "okay" an then paste.

 

This may seem like and extra step but what is does do is give the option to set the dpi as well as set the background options(Ie White, Black, or Transparent) It create an entirely new file for you that way.

 

Do tell what feature are worse in PhotoShop...there may just be another way of approaching it that is still illusive to you.

 

Again..I'm not familiar with PSP so It'll have to be spelled out to me... I'm curious as to what downgrade you are referring to.

Thanks for the reply, that's just what I was trying to do. I don't think I would have ever figured out that was the way you were supposed to do it without someone telling me (and if it was in the manual I couldn't find it). As for things that are a downgrade, one good example is seen above. For every filter and adjustment in PSP you have a dialog box as is seen on the left with a side by side comparison, a field to save a preset specific to that window and several different view modes. PS's dialogs lack these things. Not that big a deal but I'd definitely consider PSP's way to be superior. Mostly it's just ergonomics. I'm sure it's possible to do anything you can do in PSP in PS too, it just takes more steps and more time, and requires deliberate study to know what to do, whereas PSP can be figured out pretty easily by intuition alone.

If you want to see before/after image while using filter, click on prewiev box and you can see it in full size not just a thumb. PS is very complicated, but hes developed for pro use in first place. Learning the commands in PS is just the first step. For every kind of photo manipulation or creating the texture, etc.  there is many ways of doing it by using different series of commands. Thats why hes so powerful, its totaly nonlinear :)

I am also another PSP user for many yrs now and am now in the process of learning PS too, I am very glad that you've decided to keep this in posting as I am learning alot more this way, thanks for the ones that are posting ex. with their post as this is very helpful....

I do alot of amatuer graphic's & have been told that I needed to go PS as this is more detailed and I could go farther with it in my graphic world....have been at a loss since it is so far beyond from I'm used too and to find the many available tutorials you've listed here has been a big help....Thank You very much for doing this.....
