Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 08 8:41 am)
If you are using poser 6, go into the material room and move the transparency dial up and down a bit and then put it back to where it was. See if that helps. It does sometimes.
"It is good to see ourselves as
others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we
are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not
angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to
say." - Ghandi
can you post a screen shot of your material room settings?
Have you tried simply using another material just to see, e.g., select all nodes and delete the present material from the skin, it will then just be white preview. now create a new diffuse_color node like a 2D texture map and just select any jpg you have handy. make sure transparency is 0.0 with no other settings except diffuse_color set to white. that should help pin down the problem.

Hmmm. I could try that. The REALLY curious thing is the she's perfect in her PZ3 file, and
the OBJ file also imports with no problems. It's only if I save her as a character in the
library that it screws up. As I said, Poser 4 and Propack did it too. Maybe I should try
saving her in the prop library and see if it does the same thing. Even when I loaded
the PZ3 and without touching anything, saved her in the character library, she still had
missing pieces when I reloaded her from the library. Yet the OBJ file her CR2 calls, is
fully intact. It's a poser all right! (GRIN)

AhHa!
Now that I know what you mean by invisible, I may be able to help.
If there are different actor names in the two files you will end up with missing parts. If the cr2 calls for "rHip" and the equivalent geometry is named "rightHip," the part will not load and will be "invisible."
They are not invisible, they are simply not there.
You'll have to load each into a text editor and work your way through the actor name structures to see where they differ.

Hey Softshot, if this is happening on all models loaded into a scene it may be a corrupted preferences file.
In Poser 4, try and delete the preset pref's file and the Poser.ini file. Go to Poser 4 (or 5)> Runtime > prefs and delete the Poser.ini (Poser Prefs on a Mac), Poser UI (your monitor's resolution).xml, and Library Prefs.xml files and relaunch Poser. Only delete the files not the folders. I have a feeling this will get you going again. If it doesn't, let me know.
This happens when you're making a character? I had something similar happen when I mis-spelled the name of a group--"Hip" instead of "hip". Suddenly, that whole piece of mesh vanished from the version I'd saved as a character. UVmapper is good for checking the group-names, and correcting them. Use "Select by Group" and "Assign to Group".
Hello all,
thanks for your messages.
-AntoninaTiger : no, it happens with everything I can load. Even a simple box prop will appear the same. Nothing is mis-spelled here; it happens after fresh installation when Poser loads its default fiure at start up.
Teyon : thanks for your message, it sounded good when I read. But after doing so, nothing new happened. The problem is unsolved.
Fuaho : Ahha! fresh install.
Thanks again for your support and curiosity in this case.

I read your post and bells rang in my head. THAT was the solution the last time it happened,
and while I haven't had time to check yet, I know it happened this time too. I, uh, kinda forgot
that renaming parts isn't good when the names are already set in the OBJ file. SIGH. Time to do
some renaming. :)

I remember you were looking for a texture in another thread, but I'm too tired to track it down, so I'll just use this thread instead. I don't remember if you are using Poser 5 or 6, but the material should be the same in either one. The User Defined node allows total control over the color. Just use very small increments when you make changes. (Click for a more readable image).
Glad the bells rang re: the missing parts.

Thanks for the Poser material. I saved the pic cause it DOES look like a good mat for the hull.
Another question. Can you put a tex OVER a material, like a decal? Sea Siren has her name
and emblem on the conning tower, and if this can be applied over an existed material, then
mats should do for most of the sub and textures will only be needed on screens and a few
other areas. I'm hoping the answer is yes. :)

Short Answer: Yes. Save your decal as a PNG with an alpha-channel mask. In the materials room, use the scale and offset parameters on the image map to size and position the decal. Then feed the materials settings for the overall background into the Background input. Easiest is to load the MAT first, and reconnect the diffuse color through the image_map node. The big advantage is that you don't need a huge decal image. I'm not sure if the alpha channel element works in Poser 5. At worst, you would have to make a mask as a seperate bitmap and use a blender node. For something like painted letters, you could use math nodes to distinguish the colour from a white (or black) background, turning grey and white into black and white.
Softshot,
Since you kind of came in in the middle of this thread, it's to be expected that we would be dealing more with Greywolf Starkiller's problems than yours. Might I respectfully suggest that you start a new thread describing your problem with Poser 4? That way you'll get responses from people who use and know Poser 4, not people trying to solve the "Mystery of the disappearing submarine."

GWSK,
There is a python script in the printInfo section that may be of use to you. It lists all the internal names of objects in the open file. Just open the python scripts window and select the appropriate section and script & the rest is automatic.
I also played around a bit with adding text over a material and could include an example if it is of any interest.

Fuaho,
The problem is solved completely, thanks to your suggestion. The problem wasn't so much
the renaming, as it was the spaces being replaced with underscores in the OBJ file. Of course
when THAT happened, the names no longer matched. Also, OBJ names are limited to a
certain length, 14 or 15 characters, I think. If the Poser name is longer than the name window
in an objects properties dialogue, the OBJ will have only the letters that fit in the window, while
Poser will have the full name, hence, again, name mismatch. The solution is simple, short
part names, and hyphens instead of spaces. :)

One last question for you. This is not a problem, per se. More a lack of experience.
Since I was never able to extract OBJ files from the Poser files, I never learned to UVmap
my models. Poser 6, however, DOES seam to save with OBJ files external to the Poser
file. I purchased UVmapper Pro to do the UVmapping. What I'd like to know; Are there any
tutorials on UVmapping COMPLEX objects? All the tuts I saw were simple objects with easy
UVmaps and simple templates. I disassembled the Sea Siren so that the entire outside is
a figure, and each individual station, are figures. I did this so you only need to load what is
needed for a shot, rather than the whole sub. :) Even so, they are quite complex, and the
simple tutorials don't go far enough. I simply don't know where to start. Heh.

Funny thing is, I remember having this problem when I first built Sea Siren. Now I'm having the
same problem again, and it's been so long since the last time, I can't remember how to solve
it. I got the outer section of the Siren all ready, posable, turned into a figure and saved in the
figure library. Load her in again and most of the parts are invisible, despite 'visible' being
checked on their properties. Can anyone let me know what causes this? I can go any further
until I solve this and I've tried everything I could think of.
