Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 07 11:07 am)
Aery_Soul's hair products are excellent in that respect, all of them. AprilYSH's Sylphiad Hair is very good at this too. Dynamic hair can be made to hang upside down quite easily but it requires a LOT of work to set up, pose, simulate, and render, many times more than a typical hair figure or prop. That's all I can think of although I'm sure there are others.
I am kind of gaga for gonzo flying hair, examples in my gallery (beware the titties though). I stick to Aery_Soul's ponytail for the most part, and I really like it because it's very organic (can be completely posed by magnets), but I own all of their hair products and every one can be made to do some extraordinarily beautiful things. Sylphiad Hair is in the same league of power and flexibility.
edit: it should be noted that many ponytail hairs can hang the tail in pretty much any direction, often the tail is a boned set of joints that can be rotated, bent and translated just like any limb on a body.

A trick with hair is to insert a second hair model/prop, scale it semi-flat along the z-axis and/or the x-axis, and then position it until it matches up with the hair on the figure's head. Positioned carefully, it can give the appearance of the hair hanging upside-down. You will probably have to play with the morphs in the hair on the figure's head as well. Perhaps make parts of the hair on the head invisible, if it has zones.
PS - I have long wished for hair models that would easily give an accurate appearance when hanging down or sideways -- without the need for 'tricks' to make it work. So far, that's been a rare exception. I haven't really seen any Poser hair that does it all perfectly. And dynamic hair is a pain to work with -- not to mention a total system resource hog.
AprilYSH freebie TrollDroll hair works fine as an upside-down hairdo - here's my render made with it when it came out, and here's the d/l page .

**Hair layers can work beautifully for that as well. If you do any kind of postwork, that is. I highly recommend ilona's Instant Hair. Any of them. It's what I used in this image.**The problem with a lot of upside-down hair solutions is that the upside-down hair model is fine for a one-image picture -- but if you are doing a series of images (as in a comic) where the character might be holding their head in all sorts of positions -- then it would be nice to have a single hair model which would work in all of those positions. And which would look consistent throughout the series. But so far, I've always found it necessary to resort to 'tricks', or to faking the natural swaying of the hair in various ways.
Some hair models are much better at the job than others. But I've yet to find one that works out-of-the-box -- for normal, non-fantasy hairstyles. The type of hair that you'd see at the office or in a grocery store.
I'll take a look at that ilona set. It might be especially useful for distance renders. Close-ups might be a problem, though -- due to the fact that I'd be using a hair prop or figure in the "non-hanging-hair" scenes -- and I'd need to match the style/color for the hanging hair.
That freebie troll hair would have its uses, too. I'll have to download it. The hair reminds me of an older freebie that I've got in my runtime called "Magic Hair" -- and that one is sometimes useful, too -- although I have no idea who made it way back in the day.

To me, that's the best part of her hair layers. I've used them often with short hair props and have been able to match the color and style perfectly. I match the color mainly by taking the color from the hair prop with the dropper and then clicking on hue and sat/colorize. It takes some work to get the style to match, but it can be done. I also mix the hair layers quite often and just erase the "parts" not needed using a "fuzzy" brush. Blends very well and you can match the color by merging only the visible parts then applying the hue and sat.
Thanks for that information, Unicornst. I'll take a closer look at ilona's package. There are some tasks that are a lot easier & faster to do in postwork than they are in 3D.
Male hair isn't normally an issue for me. I typically give all of the men short hair (like mine) that doesn't hang much regardless of what position the character's head is in. And there aren't many male hair models out there. Although there are some good ones. Fortunately, I don't need many. Or the male characters can just be rendered bald (as you've said) -- and then they can be left that way.
But female hair models -- IMO there's not nearly enough hairstyles available for Poser. I'd like to see lots more. The variety of women's hair in the real world is far, far greater than that for men.
Perhaps ilona's packages can help a bit with that problem.
**I think I have pretty much every hair pack ilona came out with. ( I missed number 7, but it's in my wish list. grin) Don't think I've used a hair prop since I started using those. Easy to use and color/style is unlimited.
If you did want long hair on the men, she has some that were put on a V3 model, but still look great for long hair styles on the males.
Okay.... I think I've done enough advertisment for her now. LOL Suffice to say, I love her Instant Hair products and don't see me ever using anything else for my images.**
Dynamic hair CAN be a resource hog. And it CAN take ages to calculate.
But it doesn't have to. I'd suggest hunting down kirwyn's dynamic hair solution in freestuff - it uses a hair proxy figure with very few polygons that immensely cuts down on the calculation times, and a dynamic hair prop that's also optimized for performance. On a decently powered machine the hair can calculate in just a few seconds per frame.
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
digicalermo's wild hair (and wild hair male) has been perfect in every single position and length i've put it in. that said, long, straight (or at least non-curly) hair has to be the easiest thing to paint. i've never had a problem getting good results from painted hair. personally, 2d hair kits have always been too limiting light wise for me, but they work well for many people.
on dynamic hair: i've always thought this image was a great example of how perfect a solution it can be.

I'm doing a pic with a girl in an upside down position and want the hair to flow naturally.
I don't want to compromise by giving her short hair.
Does anyone know of any hair that is either commercially available or free that looks natural when the head is upside down, or am I going to have to venture into the hair room and learn how to create it myself?
