Subject: Having trouble with viewport and/or camera movement

Wizardkiss ( ) posted Fri, 13 April 2007 at 6:10 AM · edited Tue, 14 January 2025 at 5:48 AM

I was delighted to see that a PLE version of Vue is now available but I'm having some trouble with moving the camera around.

  1. When using the mode they call "rotate camera" in the options (as would often be called "mouse-look") it works in reverse of the way every other 3D application or game I've used works. Moving the mouse left moves the view right, up moves it down, and so forth. Is there an option to invert the mouse-look movement?

  2. Is there a key to move the camera continuously forward to complement the mouse-look style of camera movement?

  3. Is there a way to pan in the 3D main camera view without having to use the icon in the little camera controls window? There is an option to set the pan controls in the key config but it only seems to work in the 2d views.

I've looked through the manual and am doing searches for the answers to these questions but no luck so far.

1 I don't think you can change this, but I'm not 100% sure. You can also use the gizmos in the viewports to move your camera up/down or rotate.
2: in the camera manager, right under the scene preview, use the arrow-like icon to move the camera forward/backward.
3: Keep the right mouse button pressed in the views, you'll see a hand appear, then drag the hand around to pan the camera.

Quote - 2: in the camera manager, right under the scene preview, use the arrow-like icon to move the camera forward/backward.

I noticed the arrow like icon but what I was looking for was a key, as in the keys on the keyboard, to move the camera forward in a continuous motion as would typically be found in terrain oriented applications. Having to always switch back and forth between zoom and rotate is a slow way of moving around. Often the arrow keys and/or W,A,S,D are used for this. It is sometimes refered to as "fly-mode." I tried the Vue5 demo a while ago and I'm almost certain there was some sort of way to do this but I can't remember how. Anyone know?

Quote - 3: Keep the right mouse button pressed in the views, you'll see a hand appear, then drag the hand around to pan the camera.

That doesn't  "pan" the camera in the 3D viewport, that engages the "rotate camera" or  "mouse-look"  motion. There are separate settings for "pan" and "rotate camera" in the key config but they are both set to right mouse button by default, which is odd. Changing the "pan" entry seems to effect only the 2D viewports, not the 3D.

Thanks for the reply.

Have a look at page 531 of the manual, all shortcuts are there.

Just for clarification, that would be in the .pdf manual that comes with PLE and is in the documentation folder once installed, at least that's where and when I found it.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound

Answering #3 of my own questions, in case anyone else wants to know: the option to configure the pan for the 3D viewport is called  "translate camera" in the key config (the 4th item from the bottom). I also discovered it will accept the mouse wheel as the controller for zoom.
