THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT - SD Memory Card question

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Mon, 14 May 2007 at 5:23 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 10:46 AM

I just bought two SD memory cards, 1 GB each. Like them because they don't take a lot of shelf space. Thinking of archiving Bryce projects on them instead of DVD. Any idea of the shelf-life of SD memory cards? Has anyone used SD and XD memory cards for storage?

Memory in general could eventually succumb to constant re-writes (thousands of times), but I do not know of any expiration date as far as archiving.

its not the shelf life but rather the amount of read-writes, I believe its somewhere in the 100,000's, before failure.

However Compact Flash memory for some reason is more prone to failure, I found this the hard way when a 2GB Compact Flash (Sandisk) failed completly and after doing some reading, it was recommended to once in a while to Re-Format the Compact Flash to refresh it.

I have 2 sd cards. 128mb and 8mb. Both used to store stills taken with my DV movie cam. The 128mb is a PIA and regularly corrupts the stills.
My point is that in my experiance, the bigger the storage capacity - the bigger the problem.

I've had a couple of 1GB Kingstons for a while & have never had any problems with them, I actually run my SatNav with one.

I have a few 1G fuji XDs that have been really reliable, the only time I've lost photo's is through my own stupidity (what sort of fool tries to reconfigure his windoze to dual boot Linux without backing up all his work anyway......)

That said, I'd be dubious about using them for long term storage, dvds are cheap and easy.........

Thanks all! My only real experience with these are the XD cards. They fit great into envelopes for snail mail, and hold data pretty well going overseas and don't cost a whole lot. But I've recently started buying SD. Was wondering how long I could keep data on a card before it starts to loose info. Certainly not long term storage, but wondered how long can something be stored on it before it degrades. I'm not writing to the card everyday, but data does stay on it longer than I go around writing to it.

Just yesterday my friend told me how one of his 2 GB SD cards got corrupted.  He tried to recover his pics and only one card reader was able to do it after many tries.    He's sending that card back to the manufacturer.
For archiving data I'd use DVD, or DVD RAM, or just plain CDR, but my first choice would be an external eSATA Hard Drive which is blazing fast and can hold 500 GB.
