As I'm penciling the ideas for my next project, I think I want to make something for Apollo... Here's your chance to make suggestions, let me know what may interest you...
Clothes, shoes, accessories, textures?
I'm not the best at morphs, and hair yet.

(Since I'm not dead set on becoming a merchant, the likelyhood of it being a freebie is really high!)

Since I'm still on my 'victorian kick' perhaps some period or steampunk stuff?
At least that's more likely to catch my attention at the moment, but who knows...

Oh, yes, please.  Some Oscar Wylde/Beau Brummel stuff, Edwardian, Steampunk...that would be absolutely lovely.  There is precious little out there aside from the one basic set for M3 and the few variations...so more would be better for our Apollo, I believe.  He is, after all, the better man...

How about (as a source) that famous picture of Isambard Kingdom Brunel alongside the Great Eastern:

Whilst not Victorian, the clothing item of choice I have the most hankering for, as reards Apollo, is a trenchcoat. That said, anything offered would be much appreciated!

Long leather jacket! :D Or some Jedi clothing.

Tight leather pants and motorcycle boots would be my choice :)

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Tue, 29 May 2007 at 7:00 PM

Apollo's clothing packs already cover the leather pants and boots. You'd just have to texture them yourself Tiari. Easier said than done ;).

What I think Apollo is screaming out for is a business shirt. Or maybe that's just me :).

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards...checkmate!

How about some sci-fi clothing or armor. Or maybe even an alien character pack.

Just enjoying the Vue. :0)

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Tue, 29 May 2007 at 8:01 PM

I know I sound like a broken record, but Apollo's free clothing pack can be adapted to a very decent Sci-Fi uniform. I'll find Anton's example and post it here.

Armour would be great, and it wouldn't be too hard to at least adapt a chest plate from the default Vest. There are armour morphs included. All you'd need is a decent displacement map for fine detailing.

Carodan has a great Alien character, but unfortunatley it requires the Cole morph pack.

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards...checkmate!

A business shirt would be very cool, there's never enough of those!

Seeng your name in the thread reminded me that since seeing the apollo character in your gallery, I keep envisioning him in a heavy weathered blacksmith apron, workpants, shirt with rolled up sleeves. :)

One model I already have in the pipeline is a Daisy Duke type outfit for V3 (maybe V4 too)... I may have to have Apollo outfit to match...

Good thing about adapting the clothing to sci-fi, being that's one of the areas where I suck ;)

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Tue, 29 May 2007 at 11:08 PM

Scrubs are pretty basic and could be easily adapted from other items, or are you referring to something more like a lab coat?

PhilC has a great dynamic lab coat that can be creativley scaled to fit most characters.

Having said that, if there were one designed specifically designed for Apollo, it could then easily be adapted to fill a host of needs. A lab coat can become a trenchcoate or long leather jacket with little fuss.

Since your still on your period kick I would love to suggest a lovely Poet's shirt with big puffy sleeves with nice drapes and natural looking folds.  An option for a collar with laces that are separte so they can be turned off or left on and a tuck morph to tailor the shirt to just about any pant in Apollo's wardrobe.  Nice flat UV's to go along with it so texturing is easy with little or no stretching ..

That's about my only wish at the moment... Oh and a nice hooded cloak, conforming, of course, with lots of movement and adjustment morphs.  Same UV request as above.

The pagan in Apollo is calling out for these items.  He wants to put a spell on you.. and you and you over there too!! 😉

OK, I'll be quiet now.....

I'm talking about scrubs and everything else a doc wears to perform surgery - the cap, mask, gloves, shoe covers ect. The labcoat philC has is JUST for Judy - I've tried to convert it using clothes converter, but sense I don't have judy - it doesn't work too well.

Actually, the clothing pack doesnt cover it, sorry.  It has boots, it has pants, and I've textured them with leather.  But neither are the right "shape" for a young male (low rise boot cut pants, engineer boots with buckles and rings).

Yes the items could be adapted (with a lot of painting and postwork), but its not the same item.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Wed, 30 May 2007 at 11:54 AM

Hmmm, a trenchcoat could easily be made into a lab coat, into a uniform overcoat... just depends on how it's morphed and detailed...  Hmmm....  And Victorians used a lot of overcoats too... Hmmm Hmmm....

Hooded cloak? I'm not envisioning that one well, got pictures?

Apollo is in desperate need of hair.  Short hair styles would be my pick.  His mapping makes it incredibly difficult to paint (for me at least).

Start modeling fully clothed figures so that you can then pop on the head. Conforming clothing is a silly, inefficient concept. It's long past time that dog was put to sleep.

Your welcome for the link and April IS creating another SHORT hair style with the male meshes in mind and is including Apollo fits for that pack as well.  She works pretty fast so I would guess "soon" for it's release!  I can't wait to see what she does this time!! 😄

@jjroland

A really valuable resource for your poser toolkit are the netherworks hair conversion kits, there's one for Apollo at Content Paradise. It is really easy to convert hair props from Michael 1-3 or Victoria 1-3 to Apollo. The conforming hair conversion is a tad more detailed but very easy as well.

It's fairly inexpensive for the resources it will open up for your figures.

I think Ramwolf actually pointed me to that previously.  The problem I have with that, or reason I haven't gotten it is because I have literally zero hairs for men as it is.  All I ever seem to find are 'long hair pretty boy styles'.  I'm not knocking the whole pretty boy thing, I just like my men to be men : p

I've tried the hair room too, it's a nightmare.  For as long as it takes to render that stuff it should come out looking a WHOLE lot better than it does.

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Wed, 30 May 2007 at 8:41 PM

Couldn't agree more JJ.

I have very little in the way of masculine hair. This is why most of my characters remain bald!

The only time I've used the hair room for anything half way decent was for facial stubble, and I have to admit, that was when my standards were significantly lower :).

Thanks Connie for doing something. I am sure anything you do would be wonderfl and appreciated.

Shoes are really an easy thing for Apollo, not really needing any morphs and such. If you plug them into his boot cr2 or shoe cr2 you can get all the scaling. If you need any help I am always able and willing to help with cr2 stuff.

Dynamics are great too. When I made the original V3 Hooded Cloak 01, it started as a semi circle and I made the obj from blending various clothification morphs. In the end I found a semi circle really works well.

The hood part will like to slide on the head, so blending various attempts works great for a final obj shape. That is if you end up doing a cloak.

If you do shoes. I like these.
1850's fashion w/spats

and this modern shoe

Regardless of what you do. Let me know if I can help at all and thankie very much.

Not only are tuts hard to come by but books as well - went to 3 bookstores Monday and couldn't find one book on 3d modeling.  I know I probably could on Amazon but for somethings in life I still prefer the RL method : p

I got a sub to this:

for tuts, and so far I feel it was well spent $$.  Not much either 30$ for one month.

@Anniebel, I'm sorry if I'm being a bit dense, what kind of tutorials are you interested in? On cinema or modeling in general? If you elaborate a little, maybe I can get you some info...

@Anton - First of all THANK YOU for creating such an amazing character, and then making it free - it's heaven!!!  I was planing on contacting you once I get past concepts and ideas and the roll with creating stuff for Apollo - if that's allright!
A well functioning and swirling cape may be a nice technical challenge for me to do, ahem, eventually. The basic shape is quite simple, but making the mechanics function well, I'll have to chew on that for a little bit. May take several attempts.
In the meantime, I'll probably make a few less complicated pieces, like some shoes, apron etc...
Love the links you posted. I was just listening to one of the classic victorian literature audiobooks, and remember the description about pointy men's shoes, where the fashion was that the longer the point, the bigger the status symbol...

@jjroland - books are great, I end up buying a stack of them.
Another thing I like to get when I'm researching a product to make is some of books with pictorial archives, Dover is one of the publishers. LOL, that's my weekend wake-up drive, to the bookstore, then I sit there, drink my diet coke, and dig through books and magazines for ideas.

Both really, I only got started in Cinema6 because it was free, but because it is such an old version, tuts are hard to come buy. I guess it would be the same as looking for Poser 3 tuts LOL

I have also got Hexagon2 & Carrera but am embarassed to say I have not got around to opening them yet. I guess I probably need too, as I am probably sure there would be more tuts for them than Cinema6

Tell ya what, I would HIGHLY recommend hexagon for subdivision modeling, it is rather quick to learn, quicker then 3D Max, or Cinema or even as cararra (I have experience with all of the above), plus hexagon has a set of video tutorials that came with it, which are really slick.

The only mistake I made with hexagon is to keep it untouched for several months after downloading, being too skeptical!!!

Things that you leran in hexagon, you'll be able to transfer to other applications like Cararra or Cinema. Even the interfaces sort of resemble one another.

An Elizabethan gentleman's  doublet, such as the style worn by Fiennes (?) in "Shakespeare In Love" - with buttoned and open morphs.
Also baggy knee pants - either in Knickerbocker, golf duffer, or Elizabethan Venetian breeches style - or all 3 .
Historical everyday clothing as worn by the poor in various periods (as opposed to the rich or royals).
A good Pirate coat, or an 18th-century high collared highwayman's coat.
"pirate" waistcoat
Longjohns or footed jammies with morphing flap
Brass buckle shoes.
1776 military uniforms, British or Continental.
Baggy, super full-sleeved "poet's shirt"
Pants with 'drop to floor' morphs
. . . etc etc etc
Same stuff I want for all figures?

For absolute beginners... hmmmm...
the video tutorials that came with Hexagon are great for finding where and how certain things in hexagon work, for example how to add or delete a line or a face, what steps to go through to extrude or edge loop. I found those a lot more helpful then the manual itself.

The first part of the battle, IMO, is knowing what tool to use where. That comes from scouring tutorial and videos on subdivision modelling. My personal favorites are video tutorials available on Zbrush Central: http://206.145.80.239/zbc/index.php
Another place I go to for a lot of tutorials (besides this place) is 3D Total http://www.3dtotal.com/.  There seems to be quite a few subdivisiom modeling tutorials around!
Places like: http://www.subdivisionmodeling.com/forums/index.php   and  http://www.polyloop.net/

Learning the terminology is also a good part of the battle for an 'absolute beginner'

I hope that helps a little bit... You asked me a pretty broad question there ;)
