Subject: Poll: How Much $$ Have You Spent On Poser Models This Year? All time?

Here's a great POLL Question for all of you:

About how much do you think you've spent on poser models/characters/everything, this year so far in 2007?

And if you can estimate, about what have you spent lifetime-total, on poser/3d models?

I'm asking because I find it's a lot of fun to collect all these models, but it sure as heck can become an expensive, addictive hobby really fast, if my first 2 weeks using poser (this past 2 weeks - I'm a newbie to poser) are any indication...

I've probably spent about 1k in my first 2 weeks on poser models... they're great.. but I'm probably a bit extreme ... (though artists love me! lol)..  I'll probably scale back and keep it to no more than $50-$100/month for my first year... which is still a lot more than I'd imagined I'd end up spending.

So anyways, can you all let me know, and others, roughly your monthly budget and/or this year/alltime money spent on 3d models?

thx!

Average yearly spend $350-500 year on personal content. Plus buying stuff for clients.
A lifetime ? way too much :)

Also don't forget to add in the cost of extra hardware - to run the lastest versions. Thats pricey :)

Thanks, all --  it's good to see I'm in good company... I was beginning to wonder about myself there for a minute lol... :p

well it's a wonderful way to express oneself artistically; and having just seen rendered characters in movies (shrek etc) and games (xbox), it's great to be able to create wonderful looking characters and animated scenes and the rest of it on one's desktop... great artistic outlet for all of us..!
(though very addictive and expensive, I'm gonna have to some how limit myself... good luck i say.. :0)  (also there's this popular online place w/rendered characters, "second life", though I haven't tried it, because I'd likely spend too much time on it if I got into it..  )

grichter ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2007 at 11:24 AM

Way to much. Being a newbee a lot of catching up to do by buying things most of you have probably purchased over the last 3 to 5  or more years.  Wrote a database to track purchases and wishlist items in Filemaker Pro...have 3505.83 in my wishlist and adding things faster then I buy them. :woot:

I'd be embarrased to admit how much I have spent so far this year. Scary amount. Goal is to storyboard a long fiction story I wrote over the prior year. Based on content I am finding I am having to go back and edit, and change scenes, etc. Like going oh wow, if I add this cool prop, neat accessory, change this characters clothes, does it make the scene better or worse. A lot of what I am finding here drives my imagination to places I never considered taking the text. Which is good.

I enjoy exploring the 3d world and find the whole process so fasinating and fun. So the dollar amount I spend becomes a moot point for the most part.

OT: I have other expensive hobbies also. But what I find so refreshing is how this community never bashes a single person for asking the most simpliest question. Or how everybody tries to help everybody else. I wish my other hobbies' forums where as refreshing what I find here. That alone causes me want to embrace (and spend more in this arena) then other venues I am involved in.

I think i average/budget around $25 a week.

that puts me at almost $1,000 this year.

"lifetime" around $5,000

but that is just content it doesn't include software costs. Poser 5, 6, and 7. Shade 7 and 8, paintshop pro 8, 9, 10, and 11, Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, UV mapper pro, CRPro, Clothing converter, Clothing Designer, WardrobeWizard, Shader spider, Glow worm, Particles, PuppetMaster, Universal texture converter, Real Skin shader, Occlusion master, Hexagon, carrara basic, and i'm sure im forgetting something....

then there is subscriptions, Poserworld (life-one time payment), Platnum club, and Passport.

I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, drive fast cars. I dont have children, nor a car payment... gotta spend my money somewhere.  :-)

Lifetime - $14,000

graphicsguy ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2007 at 11:54 AM

-right re subs and software (and hardware too)...  14k sheesh!

It's a good idea to somehow become a merchant and sell something, or at least try to, and that way everything becomes a tax write off I guess :p

I have to say, it's a great way to storyboard and do animations, to have unlimited creativity.

But I'm very very surprised, in all my exploring all the forums etc out there, that nobody seems to have a repository of pz3 scene files, nor bzh animations, nor anything else beyond the components/parts/chars/props.

Wouldn't folks want to share their scene files and animation files?  That's what I'd like to suggest we all do, somehow... eg "this scene requires (list of characters etc)", download the .pz3 here ...

make sense?

hmm well back on topic, others want to vote on $ spent on characters?  this is interesting to read... I really like the entire idea... and agree w/point that this is a friendly forum, which is a nice change from many out there..

-k

Victoria_Lee ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2007 at 12:16 PM

The problem with sharing .pz3 files is that they reference the author's computer setup so if yours is different you'll have a lot of problems loading characters and textures.  That and the fact that they're huge in size.

A frightening amount, is about all I can say about that. "More than I should" is a good answer, too. I've not done the math. The fiance would be fine with it (he has his anime and DVD collection that is taking over half of the living room, after all) but I'm terrified to look at the numbers myself!

This year has sucked on so many levels. So i actually haven't spent a dime in 2007. 2006 was pretty light year as well. I know I bought a scifi outfit from Xurge3D, and I think I also got Poser 6 about 3 months before P7 came out. To date, I'm probably in the $7000+ neighborhood. But I get to cheat since I'm a 2D graphic artist and a 3D modeler. So if I need something I'm just as likely to build it myself.

I'm a horrible impulse buyer so yeah... WAY too much is firmly in place for me.  I can do some serious damage if I'm in the sudden grips of inspiration.

But $7,986.24... lifetime Rendo, $1,820.02 lifetime for Runtime DNA, $480.49 for 3DC and this a 6-7 year period. This isn't even getting into Daz3d, Poser Pros,  and wherever else. ^^;;; But that's a rough enough idea.

I've spent a few hundred in my 18 months in Poser land, it might even have reached a thousand, & I'm talking pounds! I have calmed myself down the last four of five months though, I only buy what I really need now. Mind you, the latest cool character texture suddenly becomes a 'need' when it really isn't!

Well I am certainly in good crazy company and that makes me feel better. I have spent 400 bucks in the last month alone on V4 clothing, characters, hair and some props. Over the last three years - I am not going to say perhaps I need to see a shrink! But with artists such as Orion1167, billy-t, outoftouch, danae and others its understandable they nearly always get it right ;)

ok, this thread is inspiring me to implement and keep to the policy i've always known was best.  don't buy anything  but base figures and morphs unless it's necessary for an image in production.  it always seems like it's cheaper to buy when it's 50% off, but really, i end up spending tons and using little.

jan_scrapper ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2007 at 4:54 PM

Since I began in 9/05, around $10,000.  This year, probably $1,500...Last month...$100....

I have worked at a job for 21 years in Accounting.  It helps with the extras, my car note, food and my Poser habit...

HOWEVER, hubby and I have decided to have a new home built and we are closing on it 7/26/07 and have not sold the house we live it yet.  He has VERY nicely told me I have to be a little more thrifty.

My spending must go way down, which it has.  Every holiday, instead of presents, I ask for Gift Certificates. My Renderosity Gift Certificates are used up.   I am below $200 at Content Paradise which sells products from many stores.  However, my birthday is in November and Christmas is far away.  No gift certficates for awhile.

I DO smoke, however my husband doesn't and we don't go on vacations because my boss will not let me be gone for more than a couple of days.  We don't go clubbin'....I like to go to bed at 9 or 10, then get up around 3 am and see what is happening in Poserland.

I am 51 and Larry is 56, he loves sports and has season tickets to the Houston Texans.  He has his sports hobbies, collections, etc.

Poser or 3d art has given me a calm place to be away from the hustle and bustle of Houston, seeing the sadness of the homeless on my way to and from work, the harsh words my boss throws at me and everyone here, the mean people on the freeway...

To be able to make art has been therapy for me....

My only regret is that I bought things I will never use and I cannot make the clothes I want.

I hope one day there will be a really good software that is only for clothes...everyday clothes....Clothes for Mill Baby and Kiki and Kit.  And the little toon characters.

One of my favoriate artist of children is Ruth Morehead.  I have the little children, but I cannot make the clothes.  I can take apart clothing in Poser and use a sleeve here and a ruffle there, however that is very difficult.

I am thinking of purchasing Clothing Creator by Phil C.

On a roll here...sorry!!!

Tashar59 ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2007 at 6:58 PM

Not much this year, Maybe an average of $25 a month. I model and texture most of my own stuff now. The odd sale but I just can't justify buying something I can make myself.

But I would hate to add all the years together, it's in the thousands.

Ok... wanna get scared? I remember the first thing I bought for Poser. The account says I got it 09/25/01, but I know that's wrong because I bought it while I was making an x-rated graphic adventure in LA, and that was in early 2000. I guess when they redid the store at some point and just stuck the date on there. This was back when you signed up for the Zygote mailing list to get freebies. This was back when you had to make morphs by editing an OBJ as a text file and you could only create a figure by writing a PHI file and running it through PHI builder. Man have we come a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way!

On average I'm spending about $10 in a month. I mainly buy items that are for sale and items I know I'll end up using. I can resist the urge to buy everything that looks cool, most of it I will never use anyway.

Looking to the various amounts given and then looking at the galleries I wonder where the money spent goes? What does everyone do with the stuff they buy, most of the galleries do not reflect the amount of money spent.

I'm using Poser content for my games www.gamefun4u.nl and with the money I make from the games, I can easily cover the expenses made. I also do create comics and other items for a non-for-profit organization www.mercypublishers.nl and they pay for all of the items.

Using Poser (content & software) doesn't cost me a thing, I never buy Poser items for my own use and I don't use Poser for fun. Poser isn't my hobby or interest at all, I wouldn't even enjoy using it for making renders for myself, it's way to expensive to have it just for fun. For me it's a tool to help me in my work, if I wouldn't use it for work, I wouldn't use it at all, I've got plenty of other interests. I do enjoy creating game assests and comics with Poser, it get's the job done quick and efficient, but for my own comics I rather use a plain old pencil and paper.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Nothing at all, since 2002.  My big year was 2000, when I bought Vicky 1, her clothing set, and Jim Burton's hair.  Money's been tight for some time now, so I don't even visit the countless stores and shops which sell Poser goodies.  Maybe by the time Poser reaches version 10, I'll be buying stuff again....

Not having money to throw around on things kind of motivates one to make the most of what you have available.  Personally, I think we're becoming over-saturated with Poser marketplaces.  But I'm also a loony.  :-P

Wow, don't make me think about that!

Since the day i bought Poser6, i never stopped buy something there and there... And finally i stopped a day. But bought again the day after, then stopped again. But bought again the day after...

Now i'm becoming less compulsive buyer. I planned to buy a new computer months ago, but money is as fluid as water... :( So i'm waiting.

Fo now, i tend to buy only character textures. I'm trying to model my own clothes. Someday, perhaps i would be able to look at a splendid cloth on sale and say "Hé, i can do that myself!", openning Hex, model my way, rig it, and conform. Someday perhaps... :P

So jeez, $4500 in 3 years just on 3D models !!!!!!! Could buy myself the new MacPro laptop I want for that much if I'd saved it instead. I am definately NOT going to add up the costs of the various softwares I have also bought in the same amount of time. I think my spending will lessen considerably now I have had the courage to add it all up. $20 and $30 there never seems like much at the time does it ! A good thing I don't answer to anyone about my credit card bills ; ) And now I feel so guilty I'll probably take my kids out shopping this weekend and my husband out to to dinner tonight. Great to hear everyone's responses...

I will also extend my personal congratulations to all of you, for investing in poser related characters and sets and people.

Because I truly believe that the beauty that we can create with that which we have acquired is one of the good things we can do, as people... like an artist getting new brushes, better canvases, better paints... to ADD something of beauty to the world.

Spening money on poser models is an innocent, much better use of money than many spend on, for example alcohol or bad habits...  this is something to help us all be > creative < which is to be admired, and "it's ok"...

So, just a note that I was curious as to whether I'm alone in my enthusiasm for investing large sums in building my library of characters, sets, models and accessories, and it sounds like I'm in excellent company with everyone here.

To creativity!
