Subject: Destroyed Big City - Like In Final Fantasy The Spirits Within

I'm looking for some destroyed elements of modern living - skyscrapers, burnt out cars, busted windows etc. If you're familiar with the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within there is a scene where Dr Ross is in old New York after the city has been destroyed & vacant for years - thats the look I'm trying to achieve.

If anyone has tips - suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I'll try to post a screen shot of the area I'm refering to for those who have not seen the movie.

daz free city blocks plus much editing is my suggestion.  (aka dystopia I think) there are many different parts of that set but you can get all Im talking about free just have to search around daz site.

Thats a good idea ... but editing ... well some destoyed texture with parts of tranparanty in them will do the trick..
I do that a lot in Vue ....  
So JJ is right go get the free dystopia and make some textures for it with Holes in them 😉

If you need help ..... im not that far away :lol:

Nope.  No life in the city he is describing.  What he means is, everything is dead.  NO life whatso ever.  As bleak and horrible as one can imaging.  I know what he is talking about.  I have the movie.  Umm...  There should be a ruined building in the free stuff, though if you want some rusted out hulks for cars, may I suggest getting the cars somewhere, or some other vehicle, and using a rust texture on them.  Take out the windows if you can, and flip them over or lay them on their sides.  

As for the windows... well...  good luck with that, unless you want to manually boleen them to pieces.  Not a good idea though.  Other than that, I have no suggestions.  Good luck.  I look forwards to seeing your work.

PS.  One last note before I post.  One thing I found that helps with layers in Bryce, if you arn't too skilled just yet, is to group an object, make a copy of it, then once that is done, go into the atributes area, and make it smaller by two or three points.  IE, if it was 120.45 before, make it 119.45 after.  This makes things smaller, so that you can make the bigger one your damage or rust or whatnot and add another layer of corrosion to it, by making the large one somewhat see through.

 Have you  looked at Spacebones Lost City in the free stuff  area? Its for  Bryce  but you might be able to convert it.There are also  some  ruins, bombed out buidlings at http://www.baument.com that might help as well

I don't know about the new versions of Bryce - but in the older ones you can't export anything but bryce materials & objects :( I always hated that.

I kind of like Bar-Code's idea of using Dystopia (been bugging the creators to make a destroyed version for sometime now) but I stink at texture editing. LOL. 

Thanks for all the links .. but its starting to look like to achieve what i'm after I'm either going to have to pay someone to build it for me or learn to model it myself (which ain't happening - been there, tried that LOL )

Well i have been unable to obtain even a descent image from the movie. The buildings have exposed beams, missing exterior coatings in places, busted out windows, debris at the bases from the siding falling off. 

If anyone can obtain a screen shot from the movie it would be most helpful.

*If anyone can obtain a screen shot from the movie it would be most helpful. *If you've got the DVD - play it on your PC - and press Print Screen.

In the event Windows Media Player won't play the DVD try using VLC [www.videolan.org/vlc/]. 
If you have problems making a screen dump - try a screen capture tool that can capture the video layer something like SnagIt.  

Edited to add - posting the screenshot in a reduced format here should be OK under US copyright law because your request is 'educational'. so Fair Use applys.

I have much of the stuff mrsparky mentioned, and Andi3D's stuff is decent but I would KILL for a well done modern/dystopia style ruins set. Doesn't matter if it's city blocks or individual buildings that I could manipulate.

Alot of the images I like to do are post-apocalypse or future war related and it's a real pain to find well done models that can be used to achieve the whole effect without a lot of postwork. For instance imagine a scene with a hero fighting a monster, in or near a the shattered/chopped off ruin of an office building, and mid-scene you'd have some taller ruined buildings, and further back that ruined skyline that you see in almost all end of the world movies.

Not to mention there is a lack of tall buildings for a flyby or high up scene, with shattered office buildings missing their top floors, or smashed walls exposing the jagged frame, blown out windows ect.

Someday though... someday. :)

EXACTLY Moonbiter!! Buildings with shattered glass windows where you could see a glimpse of perhaps an office on the inside ... something for the post-apocalypse setting. I'm sure we're not the only ones out there going "hey this would be useful" ... maybe a model builder will stumble upon this thread an get the creative destruction bug. Hint hint Bar-Code :D lol

Hey, what about the City of Manhatton in the movie A.I.?  There was one shot that had the camera following the amphibicopter through the city and the copter went on the other side of an abandoned building.  The building itself had file cabinets, chairs and lots of other such items.

You may want to look at that for refs.

This a good debate and we don't need any cat pictures or warm pitchforks in here :)


Debris is the whole key here to making these scenes work and thats why Lygher included rubble (courtesy of Helgard) in his ruined buildings set. 

Dirty and broken windows are easy enough to make - just use a transmap - indeed if you look the modular sf set I made I think theres some busted ones in that. They are certainly dirty. 

If you want attention to detail - walls need to have some wires (not 2 many) sticking out. 
Chips and bullet holes are easily done with bump maps as well. 

Also think of the ground - particulary look at shots of citys that are in warzones - say like Lebanon or Iraq. Or a building thats being demolished. The amount of debris it's massive assorted hunks of concrete and brick between buildings.

If there a road between it's often bulldozer sized scraped between the rubble and it's not straight. Plus that will have small bits of rubble in it, track marks from tanks etc etc.

If someone can get some cars or vehicles, I can rust them up and make them all damaged as if they had been there for a while.  As for the copter, I believe I can make it.  It shouldn't be too hard.

Oh.  And you would need skeletons.  Not many, just enough to make it obvious that no one was there for a long time.

Stonemason's ruins? I think one of the key elements in the scene in the movie I am thinking about is the feeling conveyed by the office buildings in ruins and tossed cars: its obvious that it has been YEARS since any living soul called this area home - humanity has long since left this place.  In the storyline of the movie, you are told that most of the planet is this way.

Can you imagine going to downtown NewYork City - everything is covered with a light dusting of soot ... soot from not only the dirt being stirred up by daily wind & storm, but soot filled with decaying human remains that have been dried in the sun for almost 20 years? There's not a clear path for any good length - your echoing footsteps are the only sound? 

I can only imagine the system resources a scene like that would require to render. I guess the debris and burned out cars could be relatively low poly .. but the rest .. ouch.

I think its safe to say that after sitting open in the elements for years they'd pretty much be gutted on the inside, the only thing left being metal parts.

And I agree on the skeletons .. they're be quite a few laying around, maybe even seated in the cars.

And a perfect example of my problem. With Stonemasons ruins, Lyher's excellent ruins I got from VP and Andi's models it's not to hard to do some ruin images. But if you notice almost all are done with a slight top down view and/or lack of detailed background. Notice the orangish area's?

That's where the postwork and extreme cobbeling together comes into play, which for an image here or there isn't to bad but if you want to do say a large series of images or a couple of comic books, your limited by your painting and postwork skills. I'll admit I'm looking for an easier way. ;)

And Kathym, I know we're not the only ones who think this would be useful, in one of Stonemason's threads after his Urban Ruins product, there was quite a bit of discussion about more ruins being needed, but I'm sure it's a smaller niche than the regular city streets and space stations.

Sounds like a day trip to London :)

Kalebdaark and Helgard have nice ranges of post-apocalyptic vehicles. 
Kalebdaark is in store here - Helgard at Vanishing Point. 

A quick way of making busted cars is download some from here...

remove parts like doors tires etc etc, 

Do a quick remap (box) in UVmapper on the body. On the body map use the seamless tile rust texture in Eye Candy (Nature I think) tweak it to give a burnt feel. 

Flood fill a 512x512 with a slighlty darker version of that texture and use that on all other car parts. Thats how I rust up crashed helicopters. 

skeletons 
For a cool image stick a skeleton in a space suit minus the gloves and helmet. Make the head invisible and use 1 of Poisen's (in store here) skulls. 

slight top down view and/or lack of detailed background 
Thats easy to fix and it also gets around the problem of system resources. Just render the background scene seperately. Or use a vue render. Use that as a background image in Poser or on a background prop like the cyclorama or infinity cove. 

Using a ground prop like the infinity cove ground, this is where you need to use the highest res map. Add some debris - maybe a few buildings in the back. Use the same light set from the background image. Add figures and render.Job done. 

As mentioned above the free DSU prop for poser has one of these images. 

If you are animating and want the character to walk behind stuff and don't need to move the camera - try the tutorial on Alpha Planes in Animation (link above post).
