Quote - Hey Aardvark,
Just so happens I'm making a Samurai warrior right now. Do you have any pics for me and I'll model one up for you.
Front, side and 3/4's would be ideal...but I live in the real world. So crayons on construction paper will work too.
has reference photos and links.
That's a pretty good reference. The thing that isn't being shown is the quiver (ebira) and wide variety of arrow heads (ya no ne) for the arrows (ya). I'd love to see the finished product!

hehe, I thought you might drop Kuroyume.
All done, hope it works for you!

Very nice!
Here's a link to pictures of various Japanese arrowheads:

Hard to find images of ebira/utsubo (quivers) online. There are several types, ebira being an open-box and can be rather ornate. I'm going to scan some images from "Arms and Armor of the Samurai" for reference (for whomever) and make a download zip. Back shortly (need to install scanner drivers and reboot - darn).

The bow string is "tsuru" if you decide to rename the material.
The images are here:

They were scanned in at 300dpi, so the zip is about 8MB.
One of the problems, as with all Japanese war related stuff, is that its long history means lots of changes. Heian stuff tends to be much different than Kamakura than Edo period (and so on). Even when studying katana, it is amazing how many changes from the earliest to the last incarnations (the later being heavily influenced by European designs). Luckily, the quintessential Samurai sword had a rather static form (despite the variety) from after Kamakura to the late Edo periods. Yumi seem to be this way as well - having retained their assymetrical, composite form for centuries. The quivers, on the other hand, appear to have change significantly from period to period.

Just downloaded those...thanks very much!
I've got probably a very stupid question about the quiver...you can't shoot arrows with it where it's at, can you? So what would you do, place it on the ground, wrap it around your shoulder???
Great full pic of the armour.
I was going to look up string in the translator but thought I would let a little of the white bread show through. hehe

Yes, it is strapped around the shoulder just like European quivers with the quiver on the upper back for easy reloading (right side for right handers supposedly). Note that the pictures with the quiver/arrows/bow in a neat package show the carrying pack - probably an easier way to cart the equipment from place to place, battle to battle. It's interesting that they didn't just keep the quiver about the shoulders and do the same with the bow - but then Japanese tended to gear up and gear down a lot for battle. Equivalent European archers of the late Medieval-early Renaissance (with basic armor) were using crossbows instead.

Well, it is a Japanese website - in, da-da, Japanese. ;) Unless you can read it or guess a gander at where to start the sign up process and what the fields require, you'll be quickly lost.

Does anyone make one? There is one available as Poserpros, but it really isn't very accurate. (A late feudal longbow was asymetrical and about 7' long.)
