Subject: Artistic effects -- cheap!

Move over Piranesi. Who needs to spend hundreds of dollars to achieve hand-drawn effects from 3D work? I just learned about a new filtering program by Segmentis that works with Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and other paint programs. The effects it can create are virtually limitless. Oils, watercolors, etc. I've just posted () a new version of an image many of you may remember. The colored inks appearance was achieved by using the BuZZ Pro demo version. The demo is fully functional for 20 uses. I've already placed my order to register it. This is so much fun to use! :)

LOL!....sound like you are advertizing!...thanks for the lead. You sound pretty convince. How is it compare in apple to apple with Piranesi?

MikeJ ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 2:37 PM

Thanks Varian, I posted a comment and this looks like a neat little plugin package-- I never heard of BuZZPro before and am on my way to download. It kind of reminds me of Sunday newspaper comic art for some reason, the picture you re-posted, that is--- nice effect, really and it looks much better than even Poser's sketch designer. :)

Tooooo bad the link to the demo page returns a 404

tesign ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 3:20 PM

Btw...forgot. The above is done with Corel Photo Paint 9 using effects such as edge detect, contour detect etc...and can be use with variation with other effects like water colour, crayon, etc.. I think basically buZZ Pro use the same 'technique'.

Varian ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 5:17 PM

Hein, it worked fine for me. I downloaded the demo last night and have been playing with it today. Mike, you're going to like it a lot, methinks! I just posted another image: http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=58088&Start=1&Sectionid=20&WhatsNew=Yes ...that shows what can be done with a bunch of plants in the scene. Bill, those are pretty cool variations! BuZZ does a few things like that, but where it excells is in reducing the color areas for the first step, without losing the actual colors or the edges. I know I've got a bunch of other filters to provide similar effects as you've shown, but none of 'em do it the way BuZZ does. I've been playing with the demo all afternoon, and I'm very excited about the appearances that can be achieved. :)

Varian ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 6:11 PM

Geez, Hein's right. I've just been back there and I looked all over. All the download links I found are 404! :( Mike, were you able to get it okay? All the other pages seem to be there. Just the download form is missing.

Hein and Varian...the download looks okay. Here is the link..

Varian ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 10:08 PM

Thanks, Bill. I just tried it out, and it's working just fine! LOL! ::scratching head::

tesign ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 10:19 PM

Hi Varian..I was playing with it for awhile and found quite a bit of guess work is involve. Not sure how well you can have control over the effect you want with the "stack" option, but I find that what I see in the preview window is not what I get when applied sometime. Works only for the first application to an image. It get worst when you do a second effect over the first. Most unpredicatable result when you zoom in more then 60% in preview. I have two occassion when I see something I like but when applied, got a blank screen. I'm referring to version Pro 1.03 However, stilla very useful plugin to a certain extend. IMHO..I still find WYWYCG (What You Want Can Get) with control with a good paint program for this kind of stuff...guess there is more work.

Varian ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2001 at 10:31 PM

Eww...sorry to hear about the blank screen. I've gotten a couple GPFs where it just didn't do anything but close itself. Closing and restarting the paint program seemed to clear that up. Ahh...what program doesn't have a few bugs? (If you find one, I want it!!) :) Before I made my BuZZ order, I tried to reproduce the effects by imitating some of the same kinds of effects from other filters I've got. Ormente has a new "cartoon" filter which does something similar to BuZZ's Simplifier. Then I used edge detect and contour and color emboss and silver tracer and other stuff. I couldn't get the same effects, though, and trying to juggle all those various filters wasn't as convenient. I've been using the stack successfully with Simplifier 1 followed by Edge Detect Monochrome, then a third (either Simplifier 2 or radial blur or something else). The best effects (I think) is using just one or two from BuZZ, then working with the layers of the image as different blending settings. Some really cool stuff can be made, and I think Vue images in particular give nice results. Since we have so many images in this thread already, I'll add another. :)

Made in Vue and BuZZ Pro. I think I'll be using BuZZ for a bunch of stuff -- at least until something new grabs my attention, of course! ROFL!

I'm sure Varian was kidding when he compared BUZZ to Piranesi. There is a reason why Piranesi costs $700- because it does these BUZZ effects in TRUE 3D! That's much different than a 2-D filter... However, I do like what BUZZ does and will order it. I especially like the "painterly" color-reduction effects. I have actually been in this digital painting 'racket' for many years. It seems only in the past year or so have people really begun to 'discover' it (digital media and how to make it look like "art"...) I highly recommend you check out the link above where you can see how more people are 'getting away' with this AND making good money too. (That's how I can afford to buy all these neat toys...)

If we are talking cheap, here's a nice little filter that I've been using for years....and it's FREE! It's called Fantastic Machines Paint Engine and it's great :). It creates all sorts of effects, too many to mention here. It's a Photoshop plugin, so it should work in PSP. Laurie

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2001 at 10:04 AM

I've also had Paint Engine for a long while, and I love it, too. It had a bucketload of option settings, plus you can make your own presets. It does excellent chalk appearances and brushstrokes. I'll need to try using BuZZ and Paint Engine together! Oh and Fox, I didn't mean that BuZZ and Piranesi were so comparable. I meant to get back to Bill's question (way up there) about whether it was apples to apples. It's really more like apples to oranges. Piranesi does the effects within the 3D realm the way Poser's Sketch Designer does. BuZZ is used when the final render is already made. I think the results that can be achieved are comparable, though, and BuZZ costs a lot less -- and works with Vue images (plus any other image). And thanks for the link, Fox. I'm going to check that out! :)

tesign ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2001 at 10:55 AM

Okay all....I think you all are basically talking into filters and plugin effects...basically now, well in a way. Check this palce out and get all the free godies you want. Some are pretyy good....good for filter effect junkies...LOL Btw, the animated stuff their are done by yours sincerely :)

Daffy34 ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2001 at 11:18 AM

Check what out, Bill dear? No link ;) You have to stop staying up so late at night!! LOL Laurie

jval ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2001 at 11:31 AM

I only took a quick look at the Buzz page but it seems to be similar to Segmation by XaosTools. http://www.xaostools.com/products/segmain.html Segmation is more expensive but maybe it is also more powerful. I'm not saying it is as I didn't really compare the two. Just thought you people may wish to know about a possible alternative.

hein ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2001 at 1:47 PM

Downloaded the Buzzthingy, tried it, looks a lot like the filtertools SPG used? to sell, including the stacks. Only difference is that with the SPG program stacking of any number and type of filters is/was possible and that for the price of Buzz-Lite. Apart from that $59 is half the update price of VUE4. I'll mix 'n match by hand if needed.

dwilmes ( ) posted Sat, 09 June 2001 at 6:27 AM

Here's another one to try, with about 30 filters with variations, plus some paint tools: ZenPaint Dan http://www.neca.com/~dwilmes/cr2edit.html Sorry Win only for software http://www.zenwareonline.com for ZenPaint, ZenTile, ZenGrid and VueMaster
