Subject: GND4 Outfits Wishlist

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Sun, 30 March 2008 at 7:09 PM

Quote - Connie, this outfit looks awesome. One teensy question... what is the polycount so far?

I am guessing that you;re asking about the polycount out of concerns for performance?

I haven't added it all up yet, but it will be manageable. With high detail models one has to expect a pretty high polycount.  As the time goes an amd nore and more people have relatively high end systems, the polycount is not as important as it was few years ago.
However, having said that, I still don't waste polygons. If a single quad will suffice, I don't create ten of them.

All my render tests and content and texture finishes are done on a single core Athlon processor with 1 gig of ram and 6000 series nvidia card. A computer that's about 3-4 years old and which is pretty low end for 3D nowdays. Everything runs quite well, within in very reasonable times.

Also, a cavet to all whom are eyeballing this model, this is intended for higher end and closeup renders, which is why I'm aiming for GND and similar models which are very frequently rendered up close, and which seems what a good part of the market is interested in. The outfit is not going to work all that well if you're interested in making scenes with larger number of characters in them.

Arien, does that adress your questions?
I'm curious though, I've seen you jump in and quiz people about polycount in their models, which is often not the only possible performance killer. Hi rez textures on a low poly models can still kill performance much more then higher polycount. Is your system low end and giving you a hard time? Are you loading your scenes with a lot of high poly finely textured characters meant for up-close renders?  I'm trying to understand your concerns, and give you best answer possible.

Yes and no. Remember that I do work with high rez textures, specularity, displacement, and bump normally, lots of nodes...  so add to that a very high poly model and it can be difficult to handle. Not for me, because my system is fine. I have a dual core machine with 4Gb of RAM, so that isn't an issue for me. But if I'm thinking of possibly making a texture expansion for something, and it's very high poly, then it can get hairy... I know I've had people telling me that they can't work with a full Roxana set with my textures above a certain render size because Poser flat out refuses to render it in their systems.

Gotcha! Sorry, I was unaware you're also a content creator. There are a lot of people I'm not familiar with in poserdom.
Yea, on one hand I'm aware of the polycount and textures and trying to keep that to the minimum, but on the other hand, it will be a relatively high resources type product.
Also, I'll try to make it friendly to several applications, Poser, D|S, Cararra and Vue. Hopefully that will give people a number of choices.

Connie: content creator and user. I do create covers for books, so Poser having a fit about rendering an outfit big can be a pain, and since the rendering size for print are hideously large, reducing texture sizes is usually not an option. So when I do create content, I try to create stuff that would be useful for me, but I also try to keep in mind the combined results of everything put together: base model, hair, skin textures, clothing, scenery.

oh, I do hear you about creating for print. My work related (non poser 3D work) often ends up printed on 36"x42" presentation panels, and on occasion it needs to be almost gallery quality. Often it's for printed product brochures - which I believe is very similar to book cover printing.

Sometimes I contemplate offering different resolution size images with their own mat settings, so people would have a choice. I always paint my texture higher rez, then size them own for Poser use. Sizing them down even more for mass models, and creating an extra set of mat poses and mat collections doesn't seem to be too much extra work. I wonder if it is something that the users would appreciate.

I also need to get familiar with how D|S LOD works. Most of my models are created with sub-D and smoothing, which means that with a little forethought I could include different levels of detail. But that's a little bit down the road.

Sorry if I was too harsh with my reply earlier, something in your question got me to react a bit strongly... as if you doubted that the set will be workable in Poser or something like that... but I'm over it now.  It'll work. I do need to remember when it gets released to put the notes about high end requirements in th product page.

I looked at your products, looks like you do fabulous textures. As this progresses, if you get a desire to texture it... let me know. My UV maps are usually pretty decent and workable :)

I can't help much with LoD, or modelling with SubD specifically for Studio, but I have gone the other way and used the subD dragon in C4D through a hypernurbs, and it works wonderfully, see the image in my gallery. So I suspect the low poly cage -or a lower subdivision of it- should work fine as a subD figure.  You should be able to use the same rigging for both subD and full res, although of course the morphs will need to be re-created in the cr2. Talking of which, I really should upload the full Dragon Flock image :)

Anyway, no problem. I do have something on the pipeline at DAZ that I've worked on with Trav that is high poly, and has quite a complex shader, so I know sometimes you HAVE to have the polys for things to look right.

As for this outfit, thank you for the offer. I don't think I'll be finished with my "to do" pile before you are ready to release this, so I don't think I'll be able to do extra textures, but it looks like an item I will definitely be buying once it's released :)

Actually I hope that its not a freebie. Conniekat8, i beg and plead with you to finish this and put it in the store. I'll even render promos for it if you don't have time or feel like it lol.

kobaltkween ( ) posted Sun, 30 March 2008 at 9:48 PM

just to say....

since your detail is modeled in, i'm betting there's a lot one can do some nice work with just procedurals and tiled textures.  imho, it would be very nice if you gave your details different zones, so  they're easy to control without a map.  for me, that's the frustration of quickly playing around with (for instance) the Marauder set at DAZ.  i'd have to make a new texture (or get interesting with my material room filtering abilities)  just to change the material of details that are modeled into the piece, and i'd have to do them as a mask.   it's an excellent product, but this keeps me from using it much.

Arien, i'm curious: what pixel size do you make book covers on average?  and what rendering application do you use?  if it's not too OT?

Awww, thanks :)
Ywa, it won't be a freebie... however, what I started doing, like with my Windy Wizard robe is after I release a main product, I release a number of little add on freebies for it... sort of to reward the customers, and add to the whole thing, and sometimes just because I get ideas.
But yes, the main piece will be for sale.
Thank for the offer for promos :)  I'll definately keep that in mind! (little to early for my silly brain to organize that far ahead LOL.. so feel free to remind me!)

Cobaltdream, I will definately have lot of material zoned for use with procedural shaders. Aside from poser procedural shader convenience, in my mind doing that is a part of making the piece more Cararra or Vue friendly. Also, if I don't include enough mat zones, stormy will get disappointed and mad at me. I don't think I could handle Stormy getting mad a tme all that well.

Another thing that I plan to do is use a sneaky little trick that Anton taught me, and make morphs that will cause all the piping/edging detail to disappear, so if someon wants to have a clean look, or make a texture or a displacement map with very different look, they will be able to!

Why, Thank You Miss DemonicaEvilius.
I love the look of the dungarees. Loose fitting clothing can be a lot of fun... all the interesting ways it can flow and flatter a body...

GND2 and GND4 are such top notch characters... I'm worried my modelling may not do them justice.

Hey Connie, the boots are looking really great.
I was wondering... about the holster, was it modeled for a specific firearm or is it just a generic holster shape?

P.S. As a Carrara user, I appreciate your extra efforts to make your products work well there too.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Mon, 31 March 2008 at 12:18 AM

Right now the holster is general shape. Is there a weapon you have in mind to put in there?
I was thinking about making a few morphs on the holster... open more, open less, close flat... And if there's a weapon to fit in there, I could most likely add a morph to fit it in there. Are there any I should know about?

I was considering modeling one to go with the outfit, but that may be near the bottom of the list for the moment. I'm all ears!

Anyway, I was just curious. I didn't know if you already had a certain weapon in mind.
There are already quite a few Poser handguns out there, but one specific to this outfit might be really cool. You could have your own take on what GND4 Aeon's weapon would look like.

Just out of curiosity, what did people think of the movie?
I finally got around to seeing it a couple of months ago. It was one of those films I had wanted to see for ages but just never got round to it. In the end I was a little disappointed. I thought Charlize looked great, especially when she was kicking ass. OK, I'm shallow!
But the film just lacked any real depth or impact. I feel it was a missed opportunity.
To be honest, Charlize is the only reason to watch it.
Oh, & let's not forget the most important thing, THE OUTFIT!!

Just a thought about the second pair of boots, Though the overall design is absolutely stunning, I think that the front tip is almost similar to a half pentagon which is a weird shape for boots. I remember the last update and the tip was still shaped more as a square, if you could return it to that shape again, I'd be more than happy.

I was looking around last night for Aeon pictures, and I noticed that the outfit in the movie actually had the footwear built into the outfit. I'm glad you decided to build it as separate objects. This way I can use those boots with other outfits and characters.

If I can find time to do so, I may come up with a couple of freebeis that'll go along well with this outfit. You've insired some ideas Connie. 😉

Michelle's got a cracking figure & that dress & her body were just made for each other. In fact, the more I look at it the more I feel this is a must for V4.

Apart from the obvious cleavage area 🤤 I like this dress because of the way it wraps around her neck & the straps around her waist, very cool.

I guess this could be GND's going out dress.
