Subject: real depth cumulus clouds?

Xpleet ( ) posted Tue, 08 April 2008 at 8:28 AM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 12:02 AM

I'm just curious.

We know that Vueclouds are pretty flat and lack this explosive cumulus look.

I guess clouds like below are a heck lot of rendering time.

tgtp is the only software yet i know has them and they take a hell lot of time there.

That's not correct. There are flat clouds in Vue indeed, if you want to use them, and volumetric ones, and even some only compatible with spectral atmo. You choose what you want. I have many examples of volumetric and spectral clouds in my gallery, just check these examples below. They are not exactly as the ones you show (I don't like them, they're too "normal" for me, so I never went after it) but they are possible in Vue too. It all depends on your expertise to create them (or on the atmosphere packages that you buy).

There are many more examples in many more galleries with excellent Vue clouds.

Regarding render times, they're nothing special. As with most procedural materials in Vue, it depends a lot on the function node(s) that produces them. Some are slow, others are fast. Again, it basically depends on your expertise to create them.

those are not alike the pictures i posted above.

You obviously don't see what I mean.

Vue clouds are washy-washy. That's ok, some real clouds look really like that.

But many cumulus clouds are actually still "expanding" in the sky. In fast motion it looks like they're "exploding". it is a very detailed look of which Vue can only produce the rough  overall detail by it's models. It looks like from a painting sometimes and the shadows are only roughly defined.

I guess someone could crank up some metaclouds to about 500-1000 spheres and achieve it maybe that way.

Xpleet, how much is planetside paying you to come here and bash Vue almost daily for its lack of this or that? Honestly dude, dont use the fucking program! It is that simple. What does Vue do good enough for you?

Maybe you didnt understand the reason for my post. The reason for my post was only to prove that you were wrong when you wrote "vue clouds are pretty flat". Vue clouds are not flat, I think I proved it. A completely different thing is if Vue can create clouds as the ones you posted. I dont know and I dont care.

In a side note, I think you should pay attention to what Trepz wrote, which could reflect the opinion of many more passionate Vue'ers in this forum. It surely reflects mine.

The most amusing thing is that on Planetside forum there is a thread about adding details to terrains and textures which are "too bland"... I presume that nobody is happy with the tool he/she is using but for the pros who do not have time to bitch about apps because they are busy creating art (for examples, have a look at czarnyrobert or rochr or stonemason just to mention some names).

You can get a similar result if you use a terrain with volym mats...you have to do the experiments yourself.

I believe Xpleet is right.  Vue doesn't do clouds like Tg2.  Therefore we should all admit we Vue'rs are all stupid for buying it and trash our copies of Vue.  We need to then all have our eyes examined as we have no idea of what quality clouds look like.  Then we need to enroll in art classes and get an expensive degree from some prestigious art institute.  Then, when we are all finished with that we can go home and twiddle our thumbs wishing we could play with Vue.  But we can't!  No more.  We can ONLY pass our idle time using software that renders realistic clouds.

I miss my Vue--sniff!

Well folks, I think I shall lead by example by placing my Vue discs in my paper shredder right now.  I will no longer be creating any images, no more freebies, no more looking through the galleries enjoying all your creative works, no more delighting in the sheer pleasure of releasing pent up creative frustration through computer images.  No more.  Never again.  All because I was too stupid to buy a program that rendered realistic clouds.  Bye Bye!

garyandcatherine - I'd always been worried about you what with the hiding in the brown paper bag along with a user name that, how can I put it politely, shows a certain confusion.  But then who am I to speak - I've a picture of a small demon to represent myself and an obsession with a stone carving in Lincoln cathedral going on.  I'd suggest some art therapy might be just what you need...

Take the shards of the shredded CDs from all the versions of Vue you've used and create a sculpture for your garden that reflects the sky.  Then in a way Vue will have finally cracked realistic clouds.  Of course you'd better shred every other CD from every other bit of 3d software you've ever used because they all cheat.  Ray tracing, for example, often uses rays that come from the virtual eye and bounce off things.  Thats how people thought light worked a few hundred years ago but ask anyone with even a few years of science lessons at school and they'll tell you thats wrong.  Don't worry though because that just means you've more CDs for your new sculpture.

I'll be doing that myself just as soon as I get home - if it's any good I'll try and sell it.  I will of course check with e-on that I'm allowed to resell destroyed Vue Installation CDs before I auction it for £££££

I'll miss Vue2

I don't even care to read one of those neg. comments.

Quote - That's not correct.

I put it wrong.

What I actually meant is that Vue clouds' shadow detail is pretty low ( compared to reality ). The "detail" slider does not much more than increase detail for the actual outlined-shape not the shadows within the clouds shape.

Many real clouds tho look like the Vue clouds, but when they're young they're still expanding giving this explosive look that Vue's spectral model can't create ( yet? ). That'd of course be a very detail render.

Sorry but the fact remains that tgtp has more slider for long-time rendered cloudscapes and I was wondering how they actually achieve that detail.

I saw a pic of one cloud-only-render that looked similiar to the second picture above that took about 40 hours in time!

Quote - You can get a similar result if you use a terrain with volym mats...

That is a very nice idea. I bet this could be achieved using a model or terrain.

That is a silly statement. Rather then using this to slime someone over why don't we push e-on to improve there software technology and make for a better Vue experience.

After 6 versions they should be way ahead in the game. This is by no means bashing Vue, infact i want Vue to be better because i have to give them the benefit of a doubt that e-on will satisfy the costumers that want to get one step closer to reality in rendering skies and terrains.

Besides competition is healthy and all products should be pushing for better features but i fell Vue is way behind here.

Certainly, taken in a vacuum, you are correct. But the simple fact is, when I read Xpleet's many negative posts, I get the feeling he's a TG2 troll. I've patiently explained to him the reasons why TG2 and Vue are different, yet he persists in taking Vue to task at every chance he can.

His gallery is substantially TG2 like, which is fine. I agree, if TG2 is what he wants, they by all means he should use it.

Here's the facts. TG2 does some things better than Vue. Sharp edged cumulus clouds is one of them. Period. I spent a couple of weeks last  year trying to create a 'cloud-pak' for Vue, which would use fractals to create sharp edged cumulus, and at this time, it's not possible. But, there are many more types of clouds in the sky than cumulus. So, Gary, please don't shred your disks...yet!

Try and render an interior in TG2...not possible either. Or try rendering water with transparency- last I heard it was not possible with TG2. There goes many realistic water shots. Each tool is good for different things...if what you want is TG2, then by all means USE TG2.

Well my 2 cents, doesn't vue 6 have shaders that are simular to lightwave's hypervoxels?
I don't see why this couldn't be duplicated. I think with a particle emiter it is possible and of course the rest would be the texture chanels sss and trans. if you look at the clouds they have harder edges then the default vue clouds (vue clouds look wispy to me).

LCBoliou ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2008 at 8:02 PM

Mr. Trepz,

Why don't you simply grow up, or give in to your neo-Nazi-like attitude and render a time machine for travel to 1939!  I read Xpleet’s question, and saw little reason for your childish response. I live in Arizona, and “explosive-like” lofting of clouds during the summer monsoon is very dramatic, and it would be great if Vue could create this form of dense, and dynamic cumulus clouds.

Many of the changes – advances, made in successive versions of Vue, were made due to critical comments and suggestions by users. Users who accept the status quo, are simply the status quo.  Xpleet may be a "TG2 Troll," but who cares?  That status does not invalidate his point.

Forum groupies....sheesh...get a life!

That is really my only beef with Vue are it's clouds. Other then that it's a very nifty application and by all means i try and use it whenever i can with what ever i am working on for the day.

What i'd love to see is a more global emphasis to it's atmosphere and those hard edged tall clouds many of us want to render.

A rock editor would be cool to.   ;)

Hey **LCBoliou you get a life.I have been coming here for 7 years and have sen the devolpment of Vue like MANY of us here have. And it has come a VERY long way since it inception, and i do like Terragen, always have but i do not like people coming to any forum and bashing a program that they really arent that good with anyway. My point is it doesent belong in the forum. each and every day as he so likes to come bash Vue.I am not the only one who shares this opinion, and if i were so what ! So why dont you have a seat and continue your nice artwork and get a life of your own mate. Opinions are one thing, flat out bashing a fantastic program for its lack of this or that is entirely another. If he continues i will insist he get a binkie and a nappie.

Mr LCBoliou,

If you would please, reread the top of this post. Nowhere there was a question asked, only a diminishing claim made against Vue. For many of us, that's simply not constructive, but we keep our mouth shut the first 100 times it's done. At some point, I guess we get tired of the repetitive and derogatory claims, over and over and say so.

I personally have had this same type conversation with Xpleet at least three times in the past month here on this forum. Yes, we've already been over the clouds issue, and the texture mapping and the rest of it with Xpleet. But, he insists on going over it again and again, and SERIOUSLY, I really question his intent.

And the simple fact is, calling our fave 3D app out like that is pretty much guaranteed to get a stir from this crowd. No surprise.

That said, I don't believe your comparing Trepz to a Nazi was constructive either. For that matter, referring all of us as 'forum groupies' wasn't one of your finer moments. If what you're actually after, is raising the gander of a few here, then success is yours.

I've had conversations with e-on about their clouds, and they already know many of the issues with regard to sharp cumulus clouds.

Chippwalters,

My outrage was in response to the use of obscenities in a forum over a really trivial issue. I have no problem with anyone defending Vue, but I think it stands on its own merit. All one (Xpleet included) needs to do is check out the Vue galleries, and there will be little doubt of Vue’s capabilities. I have it, and have been a paying customer for years. I also use Carrara Pro, and have been using that product since Ray Dream days. I also used trueSpace (but stopped using it after it became too icon based – from my ergonometric point of view – but TS does have excellent modeling capabilities).

Vue 6 Infinite has been a wonderful product for me, and creative folks like you (I’ve purchased several of your excellent products) have extended its use far beyond its stock capabilities. I also consider Carrara an excellent product, which has some truly outstanding capabilities which Vue lacks.

I don’t know who Xpleet is, but really didn’t see any reason for such a vitriolic response to his somewhat valid comments. I simply didn’t see Vue being denigrated and think there is no place for such absurd overreaction in a forum. I rarely visit the Vue Forum, and spend more time at the Carrara Forum. That’s not because I find Carrara the superior product – because I don’t think it is the superior product, but it just might have the more useful forum?

I apologize for my over-the-top remarks -- I simply thought that the more obnoxious rhetoric was not from this “Xpleet” person (I assume he owns Vue -- if not, his comments are pretty irrelevant, and should simply be ignored). I have little patience for software religion.

Trepz ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2008 at 11:10 AM

well LCBoliou,if obsenities upset you i am sure someone at some point will appologise to you,but alas i am not one of those people, not when it comes to nonsence like this. It is unnecessary really, and his intentions really have to be culled.I will defend Vue as will many others. And yeah,to call me a NeoNazi cause i am covered in tattoos and have little hair..huh you gotta but on your Sunday best buddy,i have heard it all from every country i have been to(; and being an American as well..good god! I must be the devil baby huh(; Cheers mate..defend what you will,as will we(; Xpleets posts have been locked, bashed and analised again and again and again, but yet he remains allowed to post here.I defend his right to free speech, but enough is enough really. Say it with me VUE ROCKS!!!

Yes, VUE ROCKS, it is unique in the graphics software world!

I certainly don't seek any apologies. I just have this huge respect for written language, even when applied to certain morons who can’t see the value of creativity enhancing (?) software like Vue, and simply play mind games with real Vue users (I'm getting the picture here).

At any rate, I’m going to create those dramatic cumulus clouds in Vue, to prove it can be done, and be thus used in scenes. I do apologize to you for my remark concerning the neo-Nazi (have no knowledge of your physiological nature, like tattoos)…I guess I violated my own premise, eh?

Cheers...
