Subject: Animated Poses, why is it not a common item??

ikercito ( ) posted Fri, 04 July 2008 at 5:04 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 4:39 AM

Hi everyone,

Why are there so few Animated Poses in the MP?? Most of them are very old and indicated for old figures. Most animations I've seen are done with the same old free BVHs found around the net, that don't fit quite well our figures.

I think Animated Poses are an underrated product that could sell very well on the MP (at least I would buy!) but nobody is even giving it a try. I'd like to see more animated products and freebies for our Poser fun!

Thx everyone.

It's mainly cause there's only a handful of people doing animation in poser. Not really worth the effort/expense it would take to create them. Plus any pose you could get would still need so much customizing for your own work that it's easier to just do it from scratch.

Ditto ghonma, with emphasis on the second part.

I've done a lot of short animations.  Tried using pre-made pose sets
and BVH files.... found that adjusting the pre-made pose to the needs
of this particular animation required more work than starting from scratch.

In contrast, using a pre-made static pose as a keyframe or an endpoint
often makes the work easier.

eclipse studio just released an animal pack in the market place as well as quite a few motion packs on their site

You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

Ditto what ghonna and ockham said. Another issue is that no one has access to a mocap rig (yet) to make those just for the Poser figures, with one or two exceptions. But with the optitrak system out there now, it may only be a matter of time. That being said, =any= captured motion is going to require cleanup and hand tweaking to get it to behave as desired. Splicing coherent mocap files and monkey-matching disparate ones can be boring, frustrating, and tedious. But it is also skills that a keyframer needs.

Yes, I have to admit you're all right. Few people are attempting animation, and it might not be good bussines... I just wish it was! I've learned a lot from tinkering BVHs in poser, and doing keyframed animation, but still have a lot to learn.. :(

BTW thanks ockham for replying, your Naturalizer script has been very helpful, as well as Smoother and others... simply great work! (just seen you're from Spokane! i'm from Spain and  traveled there looong time ago and spent a month in Newport, WA)

Oh, and thanks stallion and ghonma too!

I wish it was a good business too!  I put a lot of work into those
animation-related scripts, and it would have been nice to
get a bit of money for them.... but I figured out early on that the money
is in clothing and rendering, which I just don't find interesting enough
to work on.

I also think that most people who are interested in selling items for Poser are more interested in the more creative side--making textures, scenery and clothing--and less in the technical side.  Building animations without BVH files would be a lot of work.

Thre are quite a few animated Poses available at renderotica store. They are animated pose sets rather than bvh files , and made for specific figures. There arent many for more general actions though, the tend to focus on renderoticas main theme.   Several of the vendors will take requests , if they think there is enough of a market for it .

Not too many people want to take the time to render long animations in my experiance .

Its worth the effort. Just think BIG. I am dedicated to animation in poser, though I am still learning I know my efforts will pay off.

Passion is anger and love combined. So if it looks angry, give it some love!

There's some nice work happening on mocap/facial recognition by just using a single video source. I forget the name, but i remember a SIGGRAPH demo of this sort where the tool could extract motion just from a single camera rather then the 5-6 currently used. That's probably the next gen of mocap work, though i guess it would still need experienced animators to clean it up and stuff. There's also the Endorphin approach where it sims the human body as a series of rule-based dynamic joints that react to forces and gravity in a realistic manner. All it needs is some decent AI and you would have your fully automated human rig, the kind where you would just 'direct' your character instead of 'posing' it. Well for the initial anim anyway, after which you could tweak it to your liking i suppose.

Not that i expect to see any of this in poser of course, not till poser v15 or something

I just checked my Actions folder in my pose library, and I'm now up to 6,083 pose files; with about half of them animated poses ranging from a few keyframes to thousands.  But then, I've been developing and accumulating them for at least five years now.  Maybe I should open a store.  (grin)

Since this seems to be on-topic, I'll mention that we at Posermocap are going to be producing a lot of animated poses for Poser to make animation with Poser a lot easier. With the release of Poser Pro and its ability to do network rendering, there is a lot of potential for animation to be done with this software.
We have our own mocap rig, and we've done a number of capture sessions that will be converted into animated poses for use with popular Poser and Daz|Studio figures. We are not going to be selling strictly BVH files (although we'll be including BVH files of all motions in our products), but instead making it as easy as possible to apply the animated poses within Poser.
Right now, we're looking at doing two types of products: The first is a straight animated poses pack which will contain a number of animated poses all centred around a theme. The second is a movie pack, where we make a short film and then supply all the key motions used in that short film on a DVD. We're already in production on our first film called "Officer Murphy's Bad Day" and we're providing a day-by-day progress report on production on our site.

We are not a Renderosity vendor yet, but we intend to be selling through Renderosity as our products come online.

We think that we'll be seeing a lot more animation with Poser as people start to realize what a powerful tool they have in their hands.

BMK

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

ockham ( ) posted Sat, 02 August 2008 at 11:07 AM

@Posermocap:  Sounds very good.  Especially the PZ2 approach,
since BVH files almost never work nicely with Poser.

Be sure to announce loudly when you get into the Marketplace!

maybe they'll fix poser 8 so that the it can attach the imported bvh skeleton to the figure's
obj file, thus circumventing the cr2 problem.
