Yeah, all you super poser masters, I'd like to know this too. I've been working on a new War of the Worlds character and can't get it to map. Help!

Simple. Poser would like a .jpg (PC & MAC) or .bmp (PC) or .pict (MAC) not a tif. I think it will read it but more likely than not you'll have problems with it. Best to stick with a jpeg, takes up less room on your hard drive and Poser likes it better. HINT: Save the jpeg at maximum to retain as much detail as possible. It's stil much small than a tiff. When you got through creating the texture map in UVmapper did you save the model? If you didn't save the model the texture map wont work. Also in Poser,in the material editor, make sure your assigning the texture to the the right part of the object. Not the preview or something. As far as Tif files goe I've never had any problem with them in Poser4. hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. Nothing really seemed to help, so I'll try an be more specific as to what I did, espically in UV Mapper. In UV Mapper I loaded the model, then created a map for it. I've tried this as a planer and as a box map. I then saved the texture map leaving all the options as defaults. I then Exported the UVS, leaving all the options as defaults. Finally I saved the model, again leaving... and these are what are checked: Export Normals, Export UV Coords, Export Materials, Export UV Mapper Regions. I am just putting these things in my Nendo models directory, not in any special Poser directory (but I point to them in Poser in the Surface Material menu). Do they need to go anywhere special? Do I have the order of the saves wrong? Am I leaving out a step? I paint the texture map in PSP and save it as a .tiff with no compression. In Poser (version 3) I load the object and in Surface Materials I point to the .tif for the wall I imported. I set the object color to white, and the strength is 100. The Apply texture to highlite is checked. And the Hightlight size is 71. When I render it nothing in the way of a texture shows up at all. What the hey? One last question. In UV Mapper I do the Export UVS, but what the heck is the .uvs file used for? I don't see that it's used anywhere. Any help is most welcome and very much appreciated. Thanks. jon

I'm not an expert on this, but I've seen similar questions in other areas. I don't think your problem is with the image file format, as long as poser doesn't "squawk" when you "load" it. I think it is the direction that your object faces are facing. If they face away from the camera you map to the inside of your rectangular solid and cannot see it from the outside. A quick check for this condition is to make your obj double faced with a program like Maz's TwoFace 4 which is a free download. Hope this helps :}
Export UVS saves the mapping information in UV mappers own format. It allows you to send a file to someone that can only be used if they already own the original model (e.g. a remapping of a commercial figure like Vickie). To create the remapped version they load the original model .obj, import the .uvs file and then save the remapped obj under a different name. If all you are wanting is maps of your own models then you don't need to use this. Set up the maps you want them in UV mapper then save the texture map (Ctrl-T) and the model (Ctrl-S). You must resave the model whenever you change the mapping because information about how to apply the map is stored inside the .obj file. - Mark

Again, don't know if this helps, but your screen shot shows the texture applied to "preview" material. I assume that it is applied to any other matierial that you have defined as well. It seems you are getting some mapping because there are areas of color influence. Clearly mapping coords do not correspond to the map being used. just a thought...
ronstuff: Preview is the only thing that shows up in my Materials pull down. I was surprised by that, since the model has groups and materials in UV Mapper. But they don't show up in Poser. That is why I think I'm missing something pretty basic here. I'll try exporting from UV Mapper again and try and make some more intelligent choices in the export options I check off. I had just left them at their defaults. Thanks. jon

ronstuff: I hate to sound stupid, but "poser grouping tool"? What and where is that? Is that a P4 or a P3 thing? I only have P3 and I don't recall seeing any grouping tool. But I'll poke around and look for it. Thanks. jon

ronstuff: Nope. No grouping tool. Bummer. I will probably do the rev. skip myself and get Poser 5 when it comes out. But I'll try and do some UV Mapper export experiments tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks. jon

All: Thanks all, for helping me out. Based on what I've learned here, I became convinced that I had something wrong with Poser. So I went to Curious Labs and found that there is indeed a patch for Poser 3. I installed it and now everything works! There are actually materials present besides the infernal Preview, and when I render, I get the colors I expect. I'm not one to patch very often, for fear of breaking something, but this patch was obviously needed. Any Poser 3 user who has this problem should defiantly go get the patch. My sincere thanks to ronstuff, Steve Cox, jschoen, Cybermonk and yggdrasil for your assistance. Now I can get back to the work of trying to get decent at this stuff. jon

P.S. If you do get the patch, have your serial number handy. You'll need it to use Poser once you've installed the patch. I had a bit of a frantic search for my jewel case (where my SN is pasted) when I went to fire it up. jon

I have created a simple object (a wall) in Nendo, then converted it to a .obj file (with 3DExploration). I then took it into UV Mapper and created a texture map for it. I then took that into PaintShop Pro and painted it, and saved it as a .tiff (uncompressed). Then in Poser 3 I loaded my wall, asked to use the wall.tiff as the texture map, and rendered it. The texture map does not show up at all! Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks. jstro
