Quote - emotions. He is not constrained by the need to be objective and make only true statements. If you say this:
(A)"...What one perceives to be true or not depends largely on one's own biases..."
and then say this:
(B)"Care to offer well documented (and I do generally demand extensive documentation before I believe very much of anything these days) and various examples?"
how would that be of any use, since your bias -- by your own statement A -- drives your fact were to be discovered in a Moore film, that still does not make him a documentarian.
[snip]

Oh, blah, blah. Believe it or not, some of us actually do want to know the truth. We are not trying to be post-modernists. We simply know that all you folks out there who claim to have the absolute truth, and nothing but, are just as likely to be lying and making things up as anyone else, or interpreting things to your own liking and benefit, because many that make such claims have been caught doing exactly that.

Some of us just don't have the unexamined self-assurance some of you seem to have about what is true and what is not. I have changed my mind about what is true and what is not on various occasions. I have even done it on these forums here at Renderosity, and I cannot say that about anyone else here I have ever debated, so just blah, blah, blah. Your point is not valid.

donquixote ( ) posted Sun, 21 December 2008 at 1:05 AM

Quote - "In any case" means regardless of whether your opponent presents evidence or not, regardless of whether it is true or not.

By the way, is this your version of an objective true statement?

I wasn't aware that that was the only possible meaning, and it certainly was not the meaning I intended, and I have at least one source that defines it far differently. What would it have meant to you if I had said "in any event" or simply "anyway?"

In any case, that is all I meant, as merely a way of transitioning from one point to another.

But go ahead. Pick this apart. Pick every other thing I said apart, too. Enjoy.

But it seems to me that all anyone on Renderosity wants to do is pick fights, and perhaps especially with me. Because I don't always fall into line with the predominate absolutist point of view around here, my motives are frequently impugned and the accusations fly.

I guess I'm starting to understand at least part of the reason why I've seen so many "leaving Renderosity" type posts in the last several months . . .

People pick fights with you because your attitude annoys them.

Tebop, I don't have many advices to give to you . In France , we're touched by the crisis too . I had to find a new job at the end of the summer and I understood that the only way to do this is to make myself known . I've sent about 30 CV in my branch of activity , I had many negative answers and 2 offers , I've even had the choice . My new contract started even before the last one finished . What I mean , is that most employeement offers are not made public - they are getting occupied before that because the employeer found the right person at the right moment . I couldn't use my last employeer as a reference neither - but I've explained the reason to the persons I've met  , and they understood . You should put down a list of potential employeers and go visiting them with your CV , try to get a rendez-vous (or at least obtain the name ) with the person who will read you CV  . If you're really shy , send the CV then ask by phone if the've well received your CV a few days later  . It was very hard to do this for me , it was like barguing for a job , but I'm very happy now .Try the positive thinking : I'm not asking for a job - I'm solving an employeer's problem . Don't wait for opportunities - go and search them . Prepare yourself to the questions that you might have to answer . Try to make positive answers without accusing too much your past employeers . You can say :" I've broke my shoulder in my last job and my past employeer couldn't give me another job less physical , this is why I had to leave him . I'm feeling good now , as long as I don't have to carry heavy things all day long" .It's not false , it will look like you're defending your past employeer and any future employeer apreciate this . This will also tell him what you're able to do and what not , the honesty is good in this case.

I think this Moore stuff is off-topic and doesn't serve to help Tebop with his issue.

Tebop, getting out more is a good idea, but I definitely believe you still have enough contacts as is to get some entry level position, particularly if it's retail.  Don't go through a temp agency for work, go straight to the employer.  Not everyone who isn't advertising for help won't hire.  I know that you will probably be uncomfortable dealing with people, particularly in the interview process.  I would stress that you emphasize that you are task-oriented in your interviews.  That will help you subconsciously get the job and impress the interviewer without feeling that you are being too personal with them.  Remember to depersonalize but not be impersonal.

Okay. Whatever.

But you don't even know me. And just so you know, I've received private site mail on more than one occasion by folks here at Renderosity telling me how much they enjoy my posts, so I guess everybody isn't quite so annoyed as you think.

I used to debate some pretty bright people, and we disagreed a lot, but we didn't generally insult one another or jump to conclusions about one another's motives.

I miss those guys ...

And I've noticed people don't pick fights with me very often to my face, only virtually. And I've also noticed most of the virtual fights people pick with me are right here on Renderosity. I wonder why . . .

Well, in any case, oops, there's that phrase, I did get something wrong in my discussion about one of those links. Maybe a lot more. And you guys are probably right about Moore's work being something less than or more than documentaries, but I've been around long enough to notice there are misrepresentations of the facts on every side of every issue, even if everyone who does it doesn't catch so much criticism for it as Moore does.

And as PapaBlueMarlin said, this Moore thing is really off-topic, so I won't say anymore about it.

Oh, and regarding my advice to tebop, I didn't mean to belittle the importance of integrity, or anything else you said, operaguy (which for all I know may be why you went off on me in the first place), but clearly people skills are extremely important.

Well ... clearly to me, anyway, er, in any case.

Hey Tebop,

Don't you have some nice neighbour who can be a reference? There must be some people who know you: perhaps an old teacher from school, or a reverend. They don't have to be friends I suppose.
I also used to be shy on your age, but if you don't fight it you're getting nowhere.

regards,

Bopper.

tebop,

Depending on what the hearing sensitivity is and indicates, and because of the heavy lifting issue as well you might want to contact your local department of labor, disability rehabilitation department and see if they can help you in any way or send you to someone who can. Here I know they help with getting jobs and some training.

People who want a job find jobs.  Have you checked getafreelancer or other sites?  Lots of people need help writing simple web articles.  If you know 6th grade English you can do that.

I've been doing that for two months, making about a thousand dollars a month for a lot of hours of work.  For voice work I earn up to $300 for about an hour's work in the studio, and as a consultant I earn $100 per hour, but the work there has been hard to find.

I'm auditioning every day for the voice work, and may have a big consulting contract starting in January, but until then it's writing articles about diets and Easter and all sorts of subjects for simple web sites.

I also fill out surveys for about $25 a week, take event jobs (usually manual labor) for about $100 a day, and have sat in on some jury surveys for $150 a day.

BTW, I was very shy for many years but then became a very outgoing event emcee.

And in my case, my current boss saw that I had a decade in radio, so even though I was hired to do computer training, I'm doing a lot of voice-over work (at regular pay :-) when we have a content authoring gig.

Seriously, if you haven't done it already, sit down and figure out what you're good at, and target your searches to that.  When I was between jobs a couple of years ago, I spent some time working on the computer systems at the local Habitat for Humanity office.  It didn't pay anything at first, but later on they paid me for a couple of larger jobs, and it was something I could put on the resume to fill the gap

Good advice by almostfm. Make a list of what you're good at, of what you enjoy doing, and what you'd like to learn. Agencies and (potential) employers are interested in what you CAN do, not in what you CAN NOT do!
Look for the positive aspects in yourself. Those are your selling points on the job market.

As for references, they don't have to be people that know you well, they just have to know who you are. Neighbours are fine, or maybe an employee of a store you often visit. The minister of your church, one of your teachers.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
