Subject: Ambient Occlusion on skin nodes

brewgirlca ( ) posted Fri, 09 January 2009 at 10:06 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:38 AM

I want to set ambient occlusion to just be on skin surfaces of my figures.

So in the material room what "Poser Surfaces" do I hook up my Ambient Occlusion Node to? Are there any additional settings that need to be dialed in to make this work right?

I have tried hooking them to alternate specular and alternate diffuse and I just get pure white skin. And hooking to Ambient Color makes no difference from just leaving it at Depth Mapped shadows.
Also does ray tracing have to be turned on to make the Ambient Occlusion node work?

This thread by the master might be of interest...

Also, in P7 and P Pro (not sure about P6) there is a Material Room Wacro button to add AO to a material.

And yes, AO requires Raytracing.

Oops, I noticed in bb's thread that he says not to use the Wacro button, 'cos it connects the AO to the wrong place.

Thanks IsaoShi. I read Bagginsbills instructions and will give it a whorl. If it is by BB I am sure it will work with a bit of fiddling!

Is a whorl something between a whore and a whirl? Whatever, it sounds like fun for a bad girl.

The hook-up is to Diffuse_value and Highlight_value, if I remember correctly.  Not at my home computer, so I can't verify the settings.  The default value for AO is 3 but that can be taken up to 7.

Not Highlight_Value (or Specular_Value) - read my tutorial. I demonstrated, using a ball in a cup, why it is totally wrong to put AO on specular effects.

Only Diffuse_Value.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Thanks for the correction, BB.

Thanks everyone. I used Baginsbills tutorial and it works just great!
