Subject: Missing EXIF Data?

auntietk ( ) posted Sat, 21 February 2009 at 9:55 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 8:31 PM

I've noticed lately that the EXIF data doesn't always show up when I post an image.  I'm not turning the option off, and I haven't done any layer work in Photoshop (which is a guarantee the data will go away).

I'll give you an example:  I've got two images from the same shoot, postworked exactly the same way, but one has EXIF data (Hearing Marilyn) and one does not (Caribbean Under Glass).

I know about the option button, and I have NOT turned the EXIF data off.

The first time it happened was February 2nd.  Of the last 20 shots I've posted (including the one from Feb 2), eight of them are missing the EXIF data.

The shot I just posted a few minutes ago showed up without the data.  In an attempt to gather information, I did an edit and turned the data option OFF, saved, and then did another edit and turned the data option back ON, saved, and it's still missing.

I don't think it's me!!!

I'm not so all-fired eager for everyone to know how I shot my stuff ... I mostly use "auto" everything anyway ... but I use it myself as a reference as I learn more about my camera!

Bruce?  David?  Anybody?

Help!

all I can offer is that if you use the 'save for web' function, it bins the exif data to try and make the file as small as possible.... if you want to keep it, when saving the file choose 'save as' and it should be retained...

Thanks for the idea, Adam.  I never use "save as web," so that's not it.

Has anyone else had this experience?  I can look through people's galleries to see if the EXIF data is there or not, but since I don't know if you're turning it off or leaving it on, I have no way of knowing if what I see means anything or not!

I posted images where I know the EXIF data has been totally different from what I know I shot the image at.  I'd say it's right about 90% of the time.  I've had the same experience where the EXIF data had not shown up at all also.  Oh well, computers are not always that reliable....

Are you sure the exif data is actually missing from the picture or is the gallery software just unable to process it?

@3DGuy:  Sorry for not being more clear.  No, I don't think the EXIF data is actually missing, as in "being unavailable for RR to access at all."   It just doesn't show up when I post to my gallery, as in "even though I said I wanted to display the EXIF data it hasn't shown up where it usually shows up."

I think something at RR has changed, and I think it might have changed when the upload screen was modified.  That's just a guess.  This is a new problem, and the first time I posted an image that appeared (magically) without EXIF data was on February 2nd.  I have over 800 images in my gallery, and the mystery of the missing EXIF data has only shown up in the past three weeks.

I've taken a look at the picture you posted with the refridgerators. The jpg itself has no EXIF data according to PS CS4 (which I can see is what you used to process it), or at least all the fields are empty. So it seems that somehow the data got lost when you processed it. I have no idea where it has gone wrong though.

If you still have the processed file on your computer open it in PS and see if the EXIF info is still there (file->file info->tab camera data). If that file does have the info in it, then apparently RR does something to uploaded files.

I actually processed it in Photoshop 7, but I was able to follow your instructions, nonetheless.  You are correct!  Somehow in processing, the data was lost.  I've opened other images that had the data attached when I posted it, and it's there.  (I didn't know about that function in Photoshop - thanks!)

Mystery solved.

Well, at least that level of the mystery is solved!  Now I can focus on what's going on in Photoshop.  I'll process something and check it at each turn.

Thank you so much ... you rock!

I have not had any problems in this area myself Tara, but in honesty, I do a great deal of postwork, sometimes in third party software, a sure destroyer of exif, that said, I have only recently been checking it so as to offer ref material for the viewer concerning PWL.

I lost EXIF in the past in PhotoShop by copying (Ctrl+C) an image or part thereof, making a NEW image (Ctlr+N) and pasting the copied part (Ctrl+V) into the NEW image and then saving it.

I hope it makes sense. If it does, then rather stick to menu "Image->Duplicate" to make a new image if you want to leave the older copy intact.

Thanks, Piet.  I know you're right about that one!!    I rarely use layers, and when I do, I just expect the EXIF to go away.  I'm on a mission ... trial and error ... checking to see if the data is there, doing something in Photoshop, checking again, doing something else, checking again, doing the next thing ... you get the idea!

It's not very exciting, but I shall persevere!

This came up before on one of my images..

I asked the programmers here, and they said (paraphrase), sometimes it just doesn't load..

That was my original conclusion too, Bruce, but I can see when I open an image in Photoshop, sometimes the EXIF data is there and sometimes it isn't.  Believe me ... the first people I always blame are the programmers!  LOL!  I've been having some issues with Photoshop lately.  CS3 crashed, turned out the totally legit copy I had purchased was really pirated, can't get the damned thing off my machine all the way anyway, went back to Photoshop 7, some of THAT isn't working properly ... blah blah blah ... I'm sure when (if?) (ever?) my Adobe issues are corrected, I'll go back to happy times and consistent EXIF data!  IN the meantime, I'm checking all y postwork steps to see which ones (if there's a pattern at all) cause the EXIF data to go away.  The person who feeds and cares for my computer likes to know that sort of thing.

I'm stumped..I check with my EXIF plugin for Firefox, and I don't see the data that way either

Sorry - you lost me.  I don't use Firefox, so I'm not sure what that means.  (I'm not very tech.)

It's a browser..instead of using Internet Explorer

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

by adding this plug-in to it,

I can view the EXIF

That's cool!  Now I get it.

Yeah - I think something in Photoshop makes the data go away, and once it's gone, it's gone.  Fortunately, I always keep the original image intact and work from a copy, so I can go back and check my originals if I need the information.

Apparently there were issues with Adobe Photoshop 7 preserving the Metadata on certain JPG files.

You can download the 7.01 update from the link provided....it might solve your problem.

Tara,

I don't know about PS 7, but in CS3 using layers will not touch metadata. I always use at least a Levels layer, and never lose metadata. I know it's already been mentioned, but Save for Web removes metadata and Save As preserves it.
