Subject: I must be using Poser 8's stock lights wrong, or am I...?

I am not bashing nor am I looking for accolades, but my 3 lights are rendering much better than Posers stock light set...so I'm thinking I must be using Poser 8 lights wrong (???). Both renders are with the same render settings, low values as the render took about 1 minute with IDL on.

The first pic is using IBL Ambient Occlusion Sun Right, it looks flat and washed out.

Now this second pic are my own 3 lights, IBL w/ ambient occlusion, 1 Infinite ray trace and ao and 1 Spot no shadows. This is a big difference bewteen the two, what am I missing?

I can't look at the Poser 8 light sets right now, but here is one thing to note: when you use IDL, light-based ambient occlusion is not used at all for the render - it is automatically disabled.

Yes, you are absolutely right and I already knew that...don't know why I posted what I did. opps! I still think the difference between the 2 is quite significant which is really the reason for my op.

Check this out though, lift up Alysons arm exposing her armpit and take a render, what is this ugly light shining through? Anybody else get that?

Glowing armpits! At least it's not the nostrils, eh? :D

I can only speculate that maybe it looks like a break in the model or something. Maybe try zooming in to that area and shooting off another render to see how it looks?

Given my involvement with SM, I must word things carefully.

How shall I put this?

Oh yes, I know.

I have never published an image using a Poser-supplied light set. Yes, that's about right.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Well, you have one spotlight that's not casting any shadows. The armpit was probably supposed to be in the shadow, but since that spot is casting light there, it's bouncing around in it.

Golden rule: in reality, all lights cast shadows. If the lights in your poser scene ignore reality and don't cast shadows, there's nothing a render engine can do to create a realistic image from that.

Aye, thank you BB and Stewer.
For some of us it takes a few whacks on the head to drive the info in. When I read your post Stewer I remembered you posted the same line elsewhere too.
Duh!

Thanks again.
