Subject: Parent 1 Prop to 2 Characters

Davader ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 12:18 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 11:58 PM

Need help, have 2 characters and a jump rope prop, but can only parent  the jump rope to one of the characters.
Is there a way to parent one prop to 2 character, I have tryed many ways to do this but no luck.

The scene is three kids, and a jump rope, one on each end jump rope and one jumping.

Thanks for any help...

Try parenting each of the two figures' hand to the jump rope.

The problem with that idea is, it will likely result in the figure's hands becoming resized. And of course, the rope would need to have IK on each handle or a pivot from each handle, to be used properly.

The direct answer to your question is: No. In the hierarchy, a child can only have one parent.

That's not much help finding a solution, but to be honest I don't have a clue how to do this!

Wheatpenny's suggestion will work in general: turn on IK on the one hand
for each kid, then parent those hands to the ends of the rope.   But it really
depends on how the rope is built.  It will need to have pivots on each handle,
and you'll need to make those pivots rotate opposite to the rope itself.
(Sort of like pedalling a bicycle...)

May be a lot easier to leave parenting out entirely, and carefully adjust
every frame so the rope and both arms stay together and in rhythm.

Attached Link: SWF animation of jumprope with Point-At

Here's a different approach. I wasn't sure it would work until I tried it...
  1. Use a simple prop jumprope.
  2. Adjust the Origin (center of rotation) to be centered in one handle.
  3. Place a primitive prop in the middle of each handle, shrink it down to minimum size,
and parent these to the jumprope.
  4. Adjust the human figures to hold each end properly.
  5. On each *forearm, (*not hand) use the menu choice Object:  Point At  to make the forearm
point to the dummy prop on the near end of the rope.  (In other words, the dummy that's
    already inside his hand.)
  6. Animate the rope, with rotation and sidesway to look right.

The SWF animation at the link is the result of the above steps.  Only one kid,
but the other one would look the same.   With a little tweaking of the dummy props
at the four main corners of the rotation, you could get the hands more precisely
oriented.

i like the sound of OCK's 3:57 post  and it is a cool discovery - using POINT AT  on  a forearm-

because  I am very  scared  about parenting stuff , in  P7, those  "trying to change parent" warnings  crash  Poser on me all  the time!

Point-at is one of Poser's best and least-used features!
